Somebody mentioned a while back that the Ferry/ Roxy Best Of is targeting the yuppie market i.e. ignoring the early Roxy stuff. This will be good for people who want to give Roxy a go and capture the unique excitement of this band by buying just one cd. I've put my own tape together of essential early Roxy and hope that the cd follows this format: 1) Remake-Remodel 2) Ladytron 3) If There Is Something (you just cannot split the above three) 4) Virginia Plain 5) Would You Believe 6) Pyjamarama 7) Do The Strand 8) Editions Of You 9) In Every Dream Home... 10) Street Life 11) Mother Of Pearl 12) Thrill Of It All 13) All I Want Is You 14) Out Of The Blue 15) Casanova 16) Prairie Rose 17) Love Is The Drug 18) Both Ends Burning I've also broken the rules slightly and included Lets Stick Together (the eternal crowd pleaser) and Still Falls The Rain (later era yes, but typical of early era). What do others think? Then, because Wayne would rather sit around flirting with all of the new content managers, who think that flirting with Wayne is part of their job (besides, he's kind of charming), none of the new Bryan Ferry content gets through to the design firm Virgin is paying through the nose to and the content managers are too intimidated to go behind his back and talk to the marketing VP about Wayne. February was a tough month for Avalon, characterised by massive flame wars in the middle and, as with any conflict, there were the inevitable casualties. There were relatively large numbers of people leaving the list during the month. Our beloved majordomo was called upon to react to the carnage going on about him, in an attempt to defuse the situation by changing the subsc*iption notice on each posting. (You can change it back if you want Jason, even this fine joke's only funny for a while ;-) ) Avalon's members seem to love each other... but don't want to live together. However with a good number of new arrivals, our membership has finally passed the 300 mark at 303members, 98 on the digest and 205 on the main list. There's a pretty big turnover of sub*cribers, and a gradual increase in membership overall. Hidden within all of this internecine warfare there were some extremely good threads and much subtle insight, but sadly sometimes the perennial in-fighting masks the genuinely informative nature of this forum. February alone saw members offer advance notice of:- A new Roxy Music release (Valentine) A new Bryan Ferry recording (Mother of Pearl) Two new British gigs (Portsmouth and RAH) The Petworth, Sussex open-air gig Meanwhile our retail arm's output continues unabated... It seems even Ferry's official mouthpiece is now using this forum for advance notice of news. Perhaps we'll have to reconsider his sacred cow status...at least he'll have some new material for the next official newsletter ;-) Statto - -------------------- To disentangle yourself from these bickering numbnuts, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2000 09:12:35 -0800 From: "Turner, Chris (cturner)" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Ferry''s virgin webteam Yes, promoting and maintaining interest in their roster of artists is their one and only purpose, as it helps them sell records to poor saps like us.
