Odd as it is to hear the very unconvincing sound of the first few notes, the solo is still quite a beautiful thing. Ferry played the syn-sax himself, has always been a sucker for a touch of cheesiness, and during Taxi became interested in the first-take approach. Manzanera once talked about a similar thing happening in 1980. After Bryan had expressed an interest in the age-old I-IV-V chord sequence that Phil was idly strumming ("I could do something with that"), Phil picked up a bass guitar and put down a demo bass line. They hired several NY session players for the song, which became the wonderful Over You, but nothing had the spontaneous simplicity of Phil's demo, so that's what we hear on the album. (Applying Bryan Ferry's Theory on The Regular Replacement of Bass Players, we see that Roxy's demise was made known to us in the credits way back then. :-) B - -------------------- To disentangle yourself from these bickering numbnuts, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 04:44:31 -0800 (PST) From: Irene Adler Subject: Re: [AVALON] ALERT Sorry Noam, he ain't no homo- only kills women- he says there are only two ways to listen to those songs- 1- to make out and 2-to torture and kill women. - --- Noam Bronstein wrote: > That is some fine music to be killed to, count me > in. Perhaps more in the overall vibe than the actual sound. Venini have this sort of warped, deadpan glamour that I think Bryan circa '72 would have appreciated. And they've got the same air of breezy confidence as Roxy - you know from listening to them that they're more than a bunch of daft kids playing around with images that they don't understand. It's the same feeling of assured, yet edgy, cool that's there on Virginia Plain. And their singer Debbie Lime is really quite something. I'll put 'em on my list. I like that expression, "deadpan glamour." It reminds me of the Helmut Newton/ Guy Boudin-esque early Roxy covers, which had a lot to do with what attracted me to Roxy in the first place. "Deadpan glamour," would be a good way to describe those images. With that moustache, you don't get a wide variety of comparisons. Remember the Sparks song, My Moustache "but when I trimmed it real small, my Jewish friends would never call" I was a huge fan, and once in high school, one of the soccer team captains was singing 'Who don't like Kids?' during practice. I knew all the words, and quickly rose from bench-warmer to ...well, ...at least I got on the field. That's 'football' for those on the other side of the big ditch. -H. - -------------------- To disentangle yourself from these bickering numbnuts, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Feb 2000 12:31:28 -0500 From: "eRacerX" Subject: Re: [AVALON] vinyl From: Jeff the Shinoballo57: > All this talk of vinyl made me wonder what to do with my collection of vinyl > LP's. Try dragging ~2500 lp, ~2000 7"ers, ~500 cassettes, and I-don't-know-how-many-CD's through three moves in 6 years. There are many many times I look at that pile of crap, and decide to go eBay or just dump them on some vinyl collectors shop. Then I pull out JohnCale, or Rolling Stones, or Brian Eno or . . . . . . I have been 'replacing' vinyl for several years, but I never seem to get rid of the old records...
