Having wallowed in Astaire's understated phrasing of this great song, and, yes I admit it, sobbed through Peter Skellern's poignant colliery band version - and Ella, Frank et al - I was amazed when I first heard Bryan's jaunty interpretation. The man who softly caressed, say, "The fairground's painted swings" or "Well I'm drunk today and seldom sober" or "Unwinding rivers running through the meadows to the sea" or "Surely you cannot be leading me on?" could surely have made more of "And that laugh that wrinkles your nose touches my foolish heart." It's all so throwaway on the album and on stage. With "Just One Look" he set the speed at 33 down from 45 whilst with this one he set the button the other way round. Of course he'll have his reasons. There are very few occasions where I question his judgement - the fake sax on Mamouna springs to mind - and I'm sure he'll have tried it out in many styles. As someone who clearly loves words and phrases it strikes me as strange that he chose to race through these charming lyrics ; perhaps he was saving his pathos for the more complex emotional narrative in "Where or When" ? Or on tour he didn't want too much cheesey too soon. Yes, the list is addictive. I waste a 1/2 hour each morning at work checking it and posting. It's appalling, but I can't give it up. If I put this much energy into researching and buying online stocks, I'd be a rich woman (but I wouldn't know nearly as much about Ferry or Monquiboy). Over dinner with my husband, I start to talk about the conversations that occured that day on Avalon. He generally gets a glazed look on his face (sorry guys - - I guess we're only fascinating to each other). I do plan to drop off the list for a while when the baby arrives. Will miss it very much.
