I find myself talking to people like they're supposed to know who you guys are, and I begin sentences with, "Yeah, that reminds me of what so-in-so was saying on the list today." And my son has this little learning toy with buttons on it that when you push them say things like, "I'm the number two" or "I'm the blue balloon." It also has a brown monkey button that says, "I'm the monkey" and does a little noise, which always reminds me of Monquiboy. (The baby hits that button about seventy times a day.) Lately I hear bits of people's messages on continuous loop in my head as I drive. I've even started getting up half an hour earlier so I can read the postings before the baby gets up because I can't wait to see who said what about BF. Yes, this list is getting in my head, but it's a good thing. Thanks to all who take the time to post and respond so thoughtfully. Jim Mankey was the orig. Bassist, with brother Earle on Guitar, with Harley Feinstein on Drums, with the infamous Mael Bros making up the 5 - piece. Mind you - this was before they changed their name to Sparks - their name was 'Halfnelson' at the time. Their then producer Todd Rundgren told them that Halfnelson was a crap name, so they decided on a name change to 'Sparks'. I believe a few copies of their first Album (from 1972) still exist under the original name, changing hands for large amounts with collectors. All subsequent releases of this debut album went under the new 'Sparks' name. It's a curious piece though. They only stayed together for 1 more album - this one a real gem, believe me - called 'A Woofer In Tweeters Clothing', before the Bros. Mael gave everyone else the boot, and recruited anew. The 'Hitleresque' Ron Mael had a perm then - with the moustache - now there's a sight to see on those Album covers. A year later, 1974, and a new direction as commercialism kicked in, and they emerged with 'This Town'... , still one of my all time fave singles, from the 'Kimomo' album, and the UK went wild for them. Maybe some of our USA friends can confirm this - but weren't Sparks known 'at different times' to us here in the UK ? Their 'time' here, as it were, was 74 - 79. And that was it really, apart from an oh so brief flirtation once again about 3 years ago, which was billed as a 'comeback', though truth be told, they never actually went away, they just stopped having hits. I loved them at that time though, one of a few really original Bands around then, Cockney Rebel being another one. Christ ! Don't get me started. Something of a golden era for me in my early teenage years Gig-wise, as Sparks, Rebel, Mott, Rex, and of course Roxy toured so much at that time here in the UK. Still got all the albums of course, now on CD too, but can't bear to part with the original Vinyl anyway. Have never checked out Concrete Blond yet - must do so...
