I do like 'IYLSE' - but know what ya mean about the Vid. Great jacket though. Anyone got the TOTP performance of this ? Lost mine years ago. And was there a Vid ever made for the rather putrid 'Dance with Life' ? Or a TV appearance ? Meanwhile, with reference to my earlier post, (concerning 'first up against the musical wall when the revolution comes') I apologise humbly, and totally unreservedly. Kenny G should have been on there from the start. He'll be added first thing, I assure you. This may cause a few waves - but if Ms. Joplin had still been around she'd have been first on there. (Flames expected following that comment on the screeching one). As for Rod Stewart, know what ya mean, but 'Jealous' is a song of his I like, though nothing else, admittedly (a Girlfriend once said to me - "Reecey - that's your song" - bitch !) and he was the (ex) Wife's favourite, so he'll have to be 'substitute' for the wall. He'll be straight there if he dares cover another Waits song though, that's for damn sure. Like the list at the mo, many good threads. Finally, to our Dutch contingent - have a great time Thursday, I'll be thinking of you. Say Hello to you-know-who, will you ? Goth band Ghost Dance recorded Both Ends Burning. I have the EP somewhere, and it includes River of No Return. Can't remember fathoming a link to the film but it's years since I heard it. Interesting that Ferry should also have used the line. I heard that Sisters of Mercy (or The Mission) used to do Virginia Plain live on tour. I saw the reformed Sisters of Mercy play at a festival once. Somewhere between Loop Guru and Natacha Atlas, hundreds of goths arrived in coaches, made their way into the clouds of dry ice rolling off the main stage, and left straight after the Sisters' last note. Truly bizarre. (A few minutes later, Natacha Atlas emerged onto a small stage, seemingly devastated, and shouted,"What a RACKET!" Isn't this just Bryan Ferry, a man who can barely cope with the bitter disappointment of not having done more, been more - who wants no less than to be 'just everything/more than you need'... and knows that he's running out of time? And Valentine hints at things Bryan definitely wouldn't want to associate with his father. >The John Peel reference in "Rescue Me" is very imaginative also if >Ferry did indeed intend it in the way that it seems. Seems that he was going through a Peel phase again at the time. He once said he heard the Blackfoot cover of Taxi (which he based his version on) on the Peel show while doing 100 down the motorway, trying to find a pen to write down the name of the record. And that he was just skipping through radio stations, happened to hear Peel, and starting taping... a likely story. (Though Peel is also a night owl, in search of something to top Teenage Kicks. :-) Ferry without the fame, the sales, and the image would be the darling of something like The Wire magazine, as he resolutely and beautifully documented his life of missed opportunities, and the need to fulfill his potential. To get to some place that felt like home. He was once asked on the radio (1986) whether he was finally content - wife, children... He clearly didn't know where to begin. "I'm not sure that I'd ever be... that I'm the sort of person who'd ever..." I once asked on this list about the other snippets of dialogue that are sampled on Rescue Me and was told (was it Robert Fedder who mentioned it?) that they're from the sci-fi film The Day The Earth Stood Still, which I can now highly recommend. It's very Ferry in the way in which it works. Under that slightly lightweight surface... If you haven't yet noticed the snippets in the song, listen to the clip below before giving Rescure Me another spin. But I didn't say the song was about actually _having_ the steadfastness of love and the sense of destiny. I only said the song dealt with these emotions. I completely agree with you that Ferry is _yearning_ for those things in the song and questioning whether he can obtain them. Like you, I don't know any other way to interpret it. But he does explore those ideas, as I said, without the "cheapness" of many other love songs. "My Only Love" has much the same feel as this one, except I get the sense the relationship is past saving. After all, he says about the willow tree,"If you find you're there / Remember me," not, for example, "If you find you're there / Look me up and we'll have dinner." "Is Your Love Strong Enough?" has a little more hope in it, I think. Although the pain of rejection is somehow more poetic, sometimes the answer is "yes." Most of you expect a few of these every day and overlook them without comment. I'm sure just about everyone has made a typo--probably without even realizing it--but there are people here who want to point these out for whatever reason. I just didn't want the new person to attract any unwanted attention just because of accidental misspellings. That's all. As for me, I drag home too many essays to grade as it is, checking for every little thing. Sometimes I write nearly as much in red as the student does in ink.
