Or is it the old story of thinking of complaining to jeans manufacturers that the waistbands shrink and nothing else ? God, I do hope Bry doesn't read this - the poor man will be terrified... Now, on to fave lyrics... Oh boy is it getting rough, when my old world charm isn't quite enough... Boo-hoo willows weep around you still... And when you find the time, let's share a silk caress, somewhere, for a while... I can't see - I can't speak, I couldn't take more than another week - without you... Satin teardrops on velvet lights, morning sickness on a friday night... White jacket - hmmm, black-tie wings too..... Notes could not spell out the score... Still - there's no sound so I spin a disc around n' round, and slide the needle in the groove.... And that's really something.... But - how about THE ultimate Roxy moment ? For me - it comes from my fave track - Sentimental Fool. From 4mins 44 sec onwards - it sends absolute shivers down my spine - always has, always will. I get completely lost in it. To me, it's pure, pure Roxy Music, and no-one else could ever do it. If anyone ever said to me - sum up Roxy Music in a couple of minutes - that's what I'd pull out. Untouchable. Never to be bettered. Ever. And finally - fave 'moment of the moment' , if you know what I mean (you're gonna think i'm crazy here) - but after the finish of Casanova on the current Tour - isn't it soooo, soooo cool when Bry then lears forward and hisses "Casanova" ! ! ! into the mike ? Y'see, this otherwise useless lump of dead tree saved you from having to stand around with your two arms the one length during the solos, because, one way up, it was the spitting image of a red Gibson Reverse Firebird VII (with custom gold hardware, natch) then, with a flourish, it was (ta-da!) a cool Selmer tenor sax. Unfortunately, it was no good for air drumming to 'Remake / Remodel' and 'For Your Pleasure' which required sitting down... > But - how about THE ultimate Roxy moment ? Ooooh, more difficult choices. Well, off the top of my head and in no particular order (in other words I'll think of some more as soon as I send this)... 1) The closing lines of 'Out Of The Blue' followed by the Jobson solo is a real high, 2) The closing moments of 'For Your Pleasure', with Dame Judi intoning 'you don't ask why....' surrounded by a hooded satanic choir amidst crackling flames and the distant whinnying of horses, is one of the scariest things I know. It always reminds me of Guernica... 3) The whole of 'Beauty Queen' (the stark opening, 'it never could have worked out', the driving middle eight, the sudden stop) still holds me enthralled some 27 years later (ulp ! I've just realised I have been listening to that album for twice as many years as I was old when I first bought it and I need to lie down now...), 4) The guitar solo at the end of 'Your Application's Failed', 5) The climactic middle eight on 'Amazona', 6) The solo piano fill on 'Song For Europe' followed by the rolling thunder of timpani and sax, 7) The opening piano and drumming to 'She Sells', 8) The multi-tracked harmonies on 'Triptych' 8) Sultanesque. No, only kidding....S8^) Solo Ferry moments would have to include the string arrangement at the end of 'Love Me Madly Again', the moment where that fibrous bass kicks in on 'The In Crowd', the sound of the instrumental sections of the re-made 'Chance Meeting', John Wetton's *brilliant* bass playing on 'Let's Stick Together' (how unfair that Rick Wills is on the video), Robert Fripp on 'As The World Turns', the opening bars of 'Don't Want to Know' and the ondes martenot on 'When or Where'. I agree with Ivor about Ferry just walking out of Roxy - what the band has said after the split backs it up. In the late '80s, Phil mentioned that the last time he'd seen Bryan was in a lift in Philadelphia somewhere in '83 at the end of the Avalon tour. (Sad.) Later, Bryan muttered obliquely to a Creem reporter about Phil's Guitar Legends concerts. (They were produced for the Seville Expo and featured Phil with McGuinn and Clapton, a lightly anaesthetised and bemused Bob Dylan and a heap of others.) Bryan's comment: "Guitar Legend? I mean, what has he done recently?" I'm paraphrasing, but that was the gist of it.) Ferry did concede that "there's still something about his playing at its best." Manzanera returned the compliment in 95 by ridiculing Bryan's choice of musicians for the Mamouna tour band but praising his vocal performance. Now Bryan and Phil are working together again, Andy has disappeared. He was a guest on the New Town tour, appeared on Taxi and Mamouna, did some Horoscope sessions. And isn't that him on Are You Lonesome Tonight? I know he was unhappy about that box set... and the comments on his own web site are ambiguous. "I still see Andy socially. Phil I don't see at all," said Ferry curtly around the time of Taxi. Maybe they've decided to take it in turns to talk to Bryan and it's Phil's round. Ivor Canning wrote: >There's more to collaboration than just writing credits and >Manzanera and Mackay's creative input to Ferry's songs will always >have more impact than that of session musicians. For this reason, >it's no surprise to me that 'Mamouna' sounds so much better than his >previous solo albums (even if Manzanera can't hear himself in the >mix !). Generally agreed with the first sentence but neither Phil nor Andy contributed to the songwriting process on Mamouna - I'd be surprised if either of them spent more than a half day in the studio. I read somewhere Manzanera saying that he visited very briefly, and that Eno spent one day. Andy I'm not sure about. Ivor wrote: >It's interesting however to see how many extra musicians it took to >make 'Boys and Girls' sound like 'Avalon'. That's like saying "it's interesting how many extra keys it takes to make a piano sound like a harpsichord." What makes the latter an attempt to *emulate* the former? If the piano were described as "Harpsichord II", it wouldn't make it an attempt at being the harpsichord all over again. It lives in a different space. It shares a few of the same ideas, adds more, and makes them work in an entirely different way. Boys & Girls isn't as open an album as Avalon, and I think Bryan expected way too much of his audience at that point. He wanted to hint at something else, but he wasn't prepared for the sales loss and the critical backlash. You may not believe me, but I was genuinely amazed when I first found out that it's sometimes thought of as sounding 'the same as' Avalon. It aims much higher. It's a two-part life story on vinyl - kicks off with youth and lust, passes through love and loss, nods at isolation and cynicism and touches on solitary pleasures of all sorts :-). It bows out with old age and resentment. Musically, it's light years ahead of its predecessor. None of these ideas guarantee anything as cohesive as Avalon, or with such a wide appeal... but I'm still slightly disappointed that Bryan tried to bottle out after the relative lack of success and acclaim that he received with this one. Avalon's success must have given Bryan the feeling that something like Boys & Girls would be understood by a large number of people. Is there a market for albums that are that so intense yet walled-in at the same time? If I heard Boys & Girls for the first time today, I probably wouldn't give it a second listen - I'm ashamed to say that music needs to be easier for me these days. I just don't have the time. (Pathetic but true.) As it happened, I didn't have many albums at the time so played it enough that it began to sound musically fantastic. Interest in the words followed. (Other, more commercial albums that I did this with began to sound completely useless - as bad as the Ferry album on its first spin, at which point I badly regretted buying it.) Listen to Don't Stop the Dance through headphones. It's the central point of the whole album - it's a distillation of the whole thing. It's a dance track that hides beneath a fear of stasis, talks about needing to 'keep on moving' but just plays the same three chords over and over and over - verse and chorus. If is sounds *anything* like Avalon, you're not listening anywhere near loud enough. Those staccato guitar riffs alone.... Robert Fedder has mentioned Bryan's use of (and love of) contrasts in songs. Boys & Girls is the exception that proves the rule. Here, constancy is everything. I may be wrong but I believe she to be younger than Bryan. She started so young It just seems that shes older. Her father is the John Raitt singer mostly Broadway. She just happened to like the guitar & the blues. I got to see her in concert once & the way she caresses that 12 string guitar & that slide bar. Its as if she makes love to it. I think shes attractive more so as shes matured. She has that beautiful reddish long mane of hair. I've seen her on t.v. concerts she & E. Clapton were a joy to watch. Yes, she'd be a strong force to recken with --but she respects good musicians, & singers. Never heard anything ever negative of her. She has fought hard as a woman, to get to where she is. What a dream if her & Bryan ever got together. My father loved music of all kinds, so I was exposed to a lot of music growing up. You might say I was lucky ,as he would drag us kids to concerts with him, especially if my Mom didn't want to go. There was always music in my home blasting away. Of course our home was always a popular spot for our friends to hang out at. What memories of him. he was just a kid at heart. He taught me so much about music & of course I have a music collection to end all collections. My brother & Dad both played guitar, brother also violin , drums. My Mother somehow managed to tolerate all this. Why did you feel the need to post the "list" message when I sent it to your private address? Why not post the first one I sent about the Chastain show? Not damaging enough to post? Posting that message was a cheap shot. I stand by my thoughts and opinions (except those I formed at your suggestion --i.e. MonquiBoy), but I find it puzzling that this amuses you. Can you at least tell me why you did this? Was it a setup? It sure looks that way to me. Or is this some kind of list initiation of yours? Lure me in with fatherly warnings about artificial dangers lurking about, then post my fears for all to see? I really thought I was speaking "off the record" with a fellow Georgian and BF fan who was offering advice to a newcomer. Evidently I was wrong. And I would really like an explanation why you felt you had to do this when you knew I was just learning how things work on here. I even told you I was new. Maybe the Welcome Message should say something like "And, oh, watch your back lest someone stick a knife in it." What a horrible price for naivety. Seeing the message tonight was kind of the equivalent of being thrown into the pool at a dinner party. Sure, it's a hoot if you're the one who's dry, but it's very immature. And very uncalled for, as I have done nothing to you. Were you going to post this message too? Too late. I did it for you. I'm sure other new people need to know not to talk with you off the list. Thanks for your warm, warm welcome, David. I'm disppointed, but I'm here to stay. So get used to me. I wouldn't unsubscribe now if you paid me. Crystal Woods ecwoods@mindspring.com P.S. My humble apologies to MonquiBoy, who was nice to me yesterday, and to anyone else I may have offended due to misinformation. I'm sorry I was so easily suckered. It's easy to get duped when you don't know anyone's true character or motives. (Remember that I've been on the list just a week today). I am truly sorry if I seemed suspicious of any of you, but with all the bickering last week, I wanted to keep clear of all that. I wanted peace so much that I trusted the very one I should have been suspicious of. (Oh, the irony. . . .) Thanks to the _other_ members I've spoken with who really are classy as Ferry. It's nice to know a few of those. - -------------------- To disentangle yourself from these bickering numbnuts, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 06:53:38 -0000 From: "Johnny Reece" Subject: [AVALON] RE : Air Flight 19 Noam, am putting a Fridge, Shower, and old Cot in the back of my Record Shop as we speak. Yes, the closing minutes of 'Love Me Madly Again' still tear me up, bits of 'Lover' do too. The entire opening sequence to 'Pyjamarama' - first heard on the Radio on a Saturday morning in 73, being raved about by Stuart Henry (then R1 jock - which made me rush out & buy it, then FYP - still the greatest Album ever made, IMHO) , the whole atmosphere of 2HB (BF version), and the guitar break on 'Prairie Rose', and yes, the whole of 'Out Of The Blue' - pure Roxy - and mid-section 'Grey Lagoons' , the whole of 'Windswept' and there's many, many more (guess which Albums I'll be playing at work today ?). And, in a 'Live' sense, the Enrico solo, slowly strolling away, echoing into the distance on 'The Only Face' on the current Tour, and the swirling violins on Chance Meeting too. And I've already mentioned the 'hissing' of "Casanova" ! - makes me smile every time. The 'Roxy Pipers' (Glasgow and Edinburgh dates only), - the opening drums on the intro to the 74 Tour dates - before launching into 'Prairie Rose' (and not, as Viva ! would have you believe - OOTB) and the intro too on the 75 Tour - the 'Sentimental Fool' beginning, Ferry singing, still not on stage yet, everyone thinking "But where is he " ? - till he eventually strolls out from stage right , already half-way through the first verse. Roxy 'behind the blinds' in 1980 to the strains of 'The Bogus Man' was a cool, cool moment too. And - though only a slight connection - Eno's 'Dead Finks Don't Talk' with the marvellous Ferry intonation - "as you peck your way up there"... Ouch ! Nurse ! As has already been mentioned - oh for a time machine. As for Manzo and the break up, with Roxy not speaking to each other etc, it reminded me of a snippet I'd not mentioned before, and frankly had forgotten about. It was Dec 88, and I was in my first job ever in a record shop, in the Fulham Road, Chelsea. It was about a week or so before the BF Gig at the Palladium. In the UK charts at the time, was a 'remix' of LST. Just about to close up - and much, much to my surprise, El Manzo came in (honestly). He bought a whole load of CD Singles (including LST) and, I seem to recall, bought the single of Steve Earle's 'Copperhead Road' which he really liked, which came in a little limited edition copper-coloured circular tin, and I mentioned the upcoming BF Gig, and casually asked him if he'd be there. "Erm, I haven't been invited" was his reply. Gulp. And so began and ended my not-so scintillating chat with El Manzo. Yep, I know, not quite as exciting as the Ferry chat some years later, but hey, I was a novice back then. Meanwhile, Ive, something you mentioned briefly to me in the Bar at the RFH Gig - weren't you at El Manzo's Studio in recent times ? Do tell. We need to know. Reecey...
