Hello all, Here's my take on the post-Avalon break-up (for what it's worth) : While Neil Hubbard's role in the band certainly didn't precipitate the split, Phil Manzanera (despite being the generous and well-mannered professional we all know him to be) would have needed the heart of a concrete elephant not to be have been at least a little piqued at having a second guitarist brought in over his head. I would suggest the truth about the breakup is relatively straight-forward, and more one-sided than Martin implies. Bryan Ferry simply walked out of Roxy Music. As far as I'm aware, nothing formal was announced or said (too confrontational, I expect) - he just checked out of the hotel after the last gig saying 'see you around, give you a ring sometime' and left it at that. My understanding is that neither Manzanera nor Mackay were ready to call it a day, regardless of what tensions there were in the band at that time. When The Explorers appeared on BBC's Wogan show some time later, Terry Wogan asked Mackay what their old mate Bryan thought of the new band - Mackay rather rogueishly said something along the lines of 'I don't know. Maybe, if he's watching, he might like to ring up...' In retrospect, I'm inclined to the view that Bryan had already decided to go back to a solo career after 'F&B' but after his experience with 'TBSB', wasn't about to re-launch without first testing the water. I think Ferry always meant 'Avalon' to be a prototype solo record. I don't see that there was anything unusual in a 'music-first vocals-second' approach to recording - 'Mother of Pearl' was recorded in exactly this way back in 1973. What is more significant, I think, is that by trying to downplay Manzanera's more distinctive textures and bringing in a more 'traditional' guitarist, the new songs and style could be played by any competent session band. It's interesting however to see how many extra musicians it took to make 'Boys and Girls' sound like 'Avalon'. There's more to collaboration than just writing credits and Manzanera and Mackay's creative input to Ferry's songs will always have more impact than that of session musicians. For this reason, it's no surprise to me that 'Mamouna' sounds so much better than his previous solo albums (even if Manzanera can't hear himself in the mix !). I hope, if the band do get back together, that it's for the right reasons i.e. that there is some music which only Roxy Music can do justice to. All of the above is of course only one opinion... You really hung on to it for a long time. It does sound like a very cool car, BTW. Those pictures of Bryan in front of his are great. I was surprised to find out that old cars are very popular in the midwest. I grew up in L.A., where there was always sort of the the "cult of the old car," you know, the low-rider types and the Kustom Kar hot rodder types and the surfer types and the trendy types. I thought this was just an L.A. thing. Then I moved to Michigan for 6 months. I found myself up in a town called Holly one day, about 40 miles north of Detroit. They were having a car show! I was amazed to see beautiful old Camaros, Darts, Bel-Airs, and yes, even a shiny red Falcon. It was very cool. It looked mainly like a bunch of older guys who were not trendy, but who had been doing it forever. I imagine the cars were kept in garages throughout the winter. Someday you'll have your Starliner Coupe. Maybe I'll get a Falcon. I once had a 1965 Dodge Coronet that I bought for $700. It lasted a year, then I abandoned it somewhere between UCLA and the Valley. Bryan Ferry said in Stockholm 1980 that it's always good to exchange a musician or two between albums. There's has always (give or take John Gustavson) been a change in personell between Roxy and his solo albums. On the other hand. Ferry, like most solo artists, needs a solid resistance in the shape of a producer or a better musician like Phil Manzanera. Martin Stockman hints at a reunion. It would be intresting. But I'm afraid the peolpe with season tix at Chastain weren't prepared for all of us dancing and carrying on the way we did. There was this drunk guy heckling the backup singers. When the girl sang her part on the end of "Avalon," he kept yelling, "You sing it, girl! You sing that song!" And when Ferry left, he yelled, "Don't go! Details are on www.radiosonic.com. It tells you on this page to go to www.radio.cbc.ca when you are in RealAudio. I've tried this from RealPlayer but can't get connected to this site. Has anyone else tried? If so, have you been successful and what am I doing wrong? The box office isn't open until end February. Or am just ringing the wrong number? Can you actually get tickets for this yet ? All 4 Whitefords are going to this one. On a bigger scale I suppose but personally I thought there was a lack of emotion in some songs and no real intimacy. Cracking versions of Nimrod,Limbo and the Chosen One. But things like Slave to Love are just tuneless and beatless on this video , some of which came from the Glasgow show I think. It's a miles better video than the high road or the manifesto one though IMO. - ----- Original Message ----- From: gareth mc ginley To: Sent: 14 February 2000 15:30 Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re Videos vrs.other > > The ATGB tour was great but still well below 1988's outing for me.
