UK. Otherwise great performances, good setlist, great atmos, white socks much in evidence (looked like spats from where I was.) Only criticisms of New Town: Direction - Too dark and too choppy - like watching NYPD Blue in a coal cellar...at night...during an earthquake. Tendency to cut performances together - players change clothes in mid song etc Incongruous rock star posturing and general appearance/demeanour of Thall - never seen before, never seen again, a rock mayfly. SCANDALOUS absence of sax player Ferry has often said that video is not a medium he has a great liking for, preferring his audience not to be tied in to static images, rather to use their own imaginations, hence the tendency to stick to performance rather that narrative promotional videos. A couple of questions: Was there ever a promo video for Over You, and has anyone seen/got the Eight Miles High promo? She is without doubt an under-rated musician who writes and plays original compositions, and covers other artists! I thought of her doing a cover, of a Bruce Hornsby song, with Bryan Ferry. But then I thought, Bonnie is probably not pretty or young enough for BF. Am I wrong? Any way, I dashed the idea of a Raitt/Ferry collaboration just because I am not sure he could or would know how to handle Bonnie - she is a strong, confident woman with firm convictions. Bonnie has collaborated with many musicians in most genre, is musically versatile and talented. 1992 saw the Rhino Records release of a John Lee Hooker album "The Ultimate Collection '48-'90" in which they collaborate on "I'm In The Mood". So, it seems, Ms. Raitt shares a common like with our favored Mr. Ferry: R&Bs. Maybe Raitt and Ferry should take a chance. One never knows until one tries. As far as some of your questions- don't know nothin' about "Valentine." You're the first person I've heard speak of it. "PAL" is a type of television format, as well as Secam, and NTSC. American and Japanese TV is in "NTSC" and British TV is in "PAL." French TV is Secam, I think. The types aren't interchangeable. If a video tape is recorded in "PAL," it has to be converted over to the "NTSC" standard to be viewed on a NTSC VCR... I know it looked like overkill, but when the first one didn't post within five minutes, I did some more tinkering and sent a couple more (I am notoriously impatient). My apologies. After reading the postings the first day I subscribed, I was so excited had trouble sleeping (no lie). I didn't know a place like this existed. I mean, I've "talked Roxy" with only one other person as long as I've been a fan (15 years now). This seems like a wonderful forum for insights and information. I'm glad I stumbled accross it. I know you guys get frustrated with each other, but after so many years of being cut off from other fans, being able to hash it out about Ferry still seems like a priviledge to me. I have a literal ton of questions, so I'll just jump in. Maybe some of you have the information I seek: * Any news whether the upcoming release _Valentine_ will be released stateside or just in Europe? * What is a CD tree, and how does it work? * Is it too late to get in on the APS video I've read so much about. I saw the contents listing, and it sounds amazing. Some of it I have, and some of it I don't. * Where are the member profiles? I'd love to read them if I could only find them. * What does PAL mean inthe context of Japanese viseos. Does it have something to do with the type of VCR needed to play them? Sorry if this sounds "last week," but that's when I first tried to post it. Anyway, I think "Sensation" is a great name for the box set. It's accessible, has no meaning (at least none that I'm aware of) for other artists/groups the way "Rock of Ages" does, and it is rich with other layers of meaning the same way TTOIA was with the RM box set. It works well as a title. Yesterday I ordered checks with topiaries on them. "Just like Hollywood . . . ." Do any of you integrate your RM/Ferry obsessions into your work? I teach college English, and I find myself working him into my handouts and examples on the board. Last week the class even discussed some of the lyrics to "Love is the Drug" as a segway into an essay we read on phermones and oxytocin called "The Chemistry of Love." None of my students has the slighest idea who BF is, but it doesn't deter me a bit. If they ask who he is, and some occasionally do, I say, "He's the coolest man in music." Thnaks to all of you who posted reviews of the ATBG performances. I was unable to get to a show when he was in the states because the tour didn't stop anywhere near me, and I was too "economically challenged" to fly to Washington D.C. (we're basically living on one income at the moment while I stay home with my baby). But your wonderful accounts were almost like being there. Thanks for sharing the whole experience. I've seen Ferry only twice, in '88 and '95 (both in Atlanta) and can't even fathom seeing him 90 times like Johnny Reece. I'm so envious! I've never tried to get backstage at any concert I've gone to. I just assumed, I guess, that I would be turned away. But several of you seemed to say that Ferry does sign a few autographs after the show. Just for future reference, how do I go about getting through security next time? Thanks for everyone's help in getting me on the list (Kicki and Mr. Gresham in particular). With all the technical difficulties, a less stubborn person might have just given up. But so far it's been worth the hassle. As for Ferry, "even Zarathustra . . . could believe in [him]." Then I read an interview of Johnny Rotten where he said the only two rock albums worth owning were the first two Roxy albums. I rediscovered RM then, and of course it has been an obsession since. Towed it back from Chi. to Milw. with a '72 Dodge Dart Swinger, a small car. Drove it 2 or 3 times back in '88 or '89, paid for a lot of storage. Put it in a friend's back yard for 2 years and some kids, curse them for all eternity, smashed out the passenger side window. Then my friend made me move it in the middle of a snowey winter, so I parked it on the street near my house. The parking checker/police woman who patrols our area is the bitch of bitches (I hope to hear of her horrible and untimely violent death-really) after a few days she managed to have it towed away. It cost me about $500 to get it back. I towed it to a friend's house where it was parked in his driveway and some guy offered me $1200 for it, so feeling totally defeated and in a fit of depression I sold it to him. So there, you've made me relive one of the most depressing times I can remember so I must say this. I had you pegged as the '65 Ford Falcon type. Will P.S.
