I interviewed him a couple of years back, a practically deaf but charming man who loves his family. He has his son playing with him in the band. As for a Mamouna tour video, who knows? Maybe he decided against it. BUT...are live videos preferable to live albums? Live videos still seem like a novelty to me, and I haven't seen a great one yet. I prefer live albums, so long as they haven't been tampered with too much (Rolling Stones anyone?) SimonG >>> Mary Korfanty 02/12 8:04 pm >>> Does anyone know of any Video (commercial) done of the Mamouna tour. I did see cameras at the one I attended. I know there is a Video done by Zanna. Also Bryan states for "Otis" this Mamouna was done. Could that be the" Otis Redding"? Also other than Robin Trower who helped Bryan produce this , was two other guitarists, Nile Rodgers & Maceo Parker. What happened to the two male singers Bryan had with him? Lots of Roxy clips that I otherwise never would have seen. Thanks Martin! I especially liked that Richard Hamilton peice. Did not know that Hamilton was Ferry's teacher. I did know that he's a huge Duchamp guru, and so am not surprised that this is where Bryan gets his Duchamp knowledge. I liked the part where Ferry talked about choosing a name for his band, after a cinema, somewhere people could go to "escape reality." That's so romantic and so "pop" at the same time. I also liked the performance of "Ladytron." I had never heard it with that much distortion/experimental keyboard sounds before. Eno is really going crazy with his primative little machine in that one. Now I know what people are talking about when they speak of Roxy Music's early "experimental" sounds. Having been raised on the Sex Pistols and the Damned, I never before thought of Roxy Music as particularly "experimental," until I saw this. I look forward to completing the tape tonight or tomorrow. It will be a prized part of my collection. Other good ones are the Final Ziggy Stardust concert and The Band's Last Waltz. But Bowie's Glass Spider has been mentioned which I find a bit sterile, and the same with Bryan's New Town. I actually fell asleep the first time I watched that, and have never made it on one sitting. I don't like the band on that one - no sax player, and the guitarists hairdo??!?!?!?! Is Neil on that, I can't remember. But a video of the ATGB tour would be most welcome, as it is a very interesting show to watch, and because I've been stuck at the back at the shows I've been too it would be nice to see the band close up. In fact, I might just take some binoculars to the RAH. REM's Tourfilm, that's a good one. He was 70 years old. I count myself lucky that I got to see the man perform live a couple of times in the 1980's, once at an outdoor festival in Austin, TX, and once in New York's Central Park. I will miss his powerful voice, his showmanship and his twisted sense of humor. I'll get on it ASAP. A True Valentine 's Day Story: When my husband and I were in college back in Feb. 1992, we had been casually going out for a few months, but it was nothing I'd call romantic. He planned to tell me on Valentine's Day evening that he wanted to see me more seriously. After we got back from dinner, he made the mistake of giving me my present first: the _Total Recall_ video. Of course, I wanted to see what was on it, so I popped it in the VCR, and I was glued to the television like a zombie. He wanted to snuggle and wisper "sweet nothings." I wanted to watch the video. :-) He finally had to eject the thing to get my attention back. He knew then I was truly a Roxy girl. And from "If There is Something": the whole end of the song from "Shake your head, girl, with your ponytail" on to the end. That is, without a doubt, one of the most evocative sections of any RM/BF song, both lyrically and musically. Maybe it's some massive coincidence but if you listen carefully you can hear Peel saying "Cheers" at the start of Rescue Me. That's why this number strikes me as a call for help from our man in the same vein as most of the Mamouna material (even though it's a cover). Perhaps he felt at that time that people were judging him before even giving his work a chance. "Cheers" was perhaps Ferry's way of saying "F*** Off" to Peel. I also find it very hard to believe how anyone could dislike this tour (especially for the time)and The New Town video. Btw, Rescue Me is used very effectively on Radio 1's "The BF Story", as a means of describing the apparent lack of direction in BF's career in the early 90's. Hubbard does appear on the video, performing much better than on The High Road and I liked Jeff Thall too. His performance gave the whole thing a real edge IMHO. >But a video of the ATGB tour would be most welcome, as it is a very > >interesting show to watch, and because I've been stuck at the back at > >the shows I've been too it would be nice to see the band close up. In > >fact, I might just take some binoculars to the RAH. The ATGB tour was great but still well below 1988's outing for me. And it wouldn't surprise me if Ferry never puts out another live video. A lot of effort went into New Town and I think it would be damn hard to top. Been there, done that type of thing. Anyone else dislike New Town and why? Jonathan Demme and Martin Scorcese are both great filmmakers. These are terrific to see in the theatre if you can. I'll never forget a night in '86 at Cinema V in Montreal, dancing in the aisles with my friends for most of Stop Making Sense. (what a theatre that was... the balcony was for potheads, the lower level for winos) That film has now been remastered and is available on DVD, btw. I'd see The Kids Are Alright or Rust Never Sleeps on the big screen again also. And of course The High Road if that ever happened. Most of the other big rock films I found pretty boring and/or self indulgent. Oh, I've heard the remastered/DVD Yellow Submarine is pretty good too. Yikes! He's tall enough to slap at the keyboard and grab at the mouse. So right now I'm typing with one hand and blocking him with the other. Loads of fun. Just wait! Is this your first baby? Being a mother is like being in the Peace Corp: it's the toughest job you'll ever love. Maybe we'll be able to catch the next BF tour since we missed this one. I'm hoping for more cities next time. Of course, we're looking at three or four years wait time minimum. Lots of time to save up for it. And the idea about RM and pop culture was great. Maybe after I get my doctorate, I can design a class like that. Right now I teach "core" classes like Composition I and Intro. to Literature. Boring stuff for the most part. I'd love to teach about Ferry. That would be one amazing class. Enjoy your time at home, Heather, and take lots of pictures, esp. the first few weeks. They change so quickly. Let me know if I can help in any way. After the baby gets here, we may want to correspond about the baby through out private accounts so we won't bore anybody else with a ton of "baby talk." I'd love to hear how things go.
