Has anybody watched this particular video and could you send your >view on it please? > Karen - New Town is one of the few essentials in any Ferry collection outside the actual albums themselves. It sums up everything that is great about the man and his music - visual extravagence, superb showmanship, expensive glamour, fabulous musicianship and sheer flair. Shot across various venues in Europe in 1988 it makes use of numerous camera angles and looks very fresh even by todays standards. Nimrod sets the tone for what is a dark, haunting affair with a dimly lit stage and insence smouldering in the background. Throughout we are treated to black & white, fly on the wall snippets of the magnificant sights of Europe and the seedy, yet glamorous undergrowth. Ferry makes his usual dramatic entrance just as Limbo suddenly lets loose and we're off on another mad affair. He's on top form throughout, complete with floppy fringe, goofy wave, air guitar, and vertical pole leaps at the end of most numbers. And of course it just wouldn't be Bryan if he wasn't flirting like mad witht the female backing singers. Most important of all though is that his vioce is in top gear. The combination of old and new material works really well. The Boys & Girls numbers (Slave To Love, Chosen One, and title track) are given an extra degree of melancholy and aggression which suits them surprisingly well. Kiss and Tell, While My Heart is Still Beating, and Windswept are also top notch. A sweaty and confused looking Ferry is the embodiment of the theme of an excellent psychadelic performance of Dream Home (is this song autobiographical?). The usual hits round things up with the serene looking Yannick Etienne getting rapturous applause for her magnificent solo on Avalon, and all and sundry going crazy on Do The Strand. Absolute perfection and (from what I've seen/ heard) probably the best Ferry/ Roxy tour ever. Oh for a time machine. Best wishes, Gareth. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To disentangle yourself from these bickering numbnuts, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 07:48:08 -0600 (CST) From: MarlanaK@webtv.net (Mary Korfanty) Subject: [AVALON] Re Covers How about Bryan ,doing "Respect" by Aretha Franklin? Was Hubbard part of the "tension" > that led to the end, or was that all Ferry-Manzanera-Mackay? There is absolutely no evidence of any friction between the basin-fringed demi-God Neil Hubbard and Roxy axemeister Manzanera. Their styles compliment one another - sonic soundscapes v delta blues - and they are known to be mild, pleasant individuals. Many things led to the split. For several albums the band had become less of an ensemble and more of the genius of one man. Although many fine songs in the canon have a co-writer credit, (Song For Europe, Out of the Blue,) it was clear to most insiders that beyond, say, Country Life this was a solo artist backed by some intelligent, creative musicians who happened to be friends. All the documentary evidence suggests that the music was laid down in the studio by the band - including Bry - and only later would he come in privately to record the vocal ; Andy and Phil are on record as saying they had no idea what Avalon was about and were surprised by the melancholy mood when they got to hear the master. Friends fall out. Especially when there is money and ego in the mix. Manifesto and F&B were, to my ears and for all their high points, the sound of men coasting along on their brand name. What a surprise and delight, therefore, that Avalon, with its moods, dark melodies and beautiful production, should be their swansong. (Although pop historians may well suggest this to be the first album in a "solo" triolgy of Avalon, Boys and Girls, and Bete Noire.) The truth is simple. Andy and Phil had ceased to like Bryan and vice versa. Bryan wanted the freedom to work with the likes of Hubbard, Gilmour, Marr, Rogers, Williams, Good etc., without feeling that they had to be airbrushed out of the video to preserve the Roxy name. And Andy and Phil, at that time, also preferred to work with, for example, the gentlemanly James Wraith rather than someone they perceived to have turned into an egomaniac. When we read a novel we all crave a happy ending. It's natural for us to want these three - and the guy who twiddled some knobs back in 1972 - to storm onstage again, the best of friends, knocking out Pearl and Psalm in their lunch-break. The word on the wind around town right now is that they ARE getting together in the Summer to re-record some old Roxy songs. Perhaps they'll try out a couple of new numbers. Who knows ? My view is that Your Painted Smile or Kiss and Tell wouldn't have sounded much different if they had the RM nomenclature as opposed to the BF moniker. Neil Hubbard fans might like to hear his devilish licks on Robert Palmer's "Best of Both Worlds." pip pip Martini - -------------------- To disentangle yourself from these bickering numbnuts, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 10:07:46 -0600 From: Jim Rosencutter Subject: [AVALON] Screamin' Jay I was saddened to read in the paper today that Screamin' Jay Hawkins, composer of "I Put A Spell On You," passed away yesterday in a Paris hospital. I know it looked like overkill, but when the first one didn't post within five minutes, I did some more tinkering and sent a couple more (I am notoriously impatient). My apologies. After reading the postings the first day I subscribed, I was so excited had trouble sleeping (no lie). I didn't know a place like this existed. I mean, I've "talked Roxy" with only one other person as long as I've been a fan (15 years now). This seems like a wonderful forum for insights and information. I'm glad I stumbled accross it. I know you guys get frustrated with each other, but after so many years of being cut off from other fans, being able to hash it out about Ferry still seems like a priviledge to me. I have a literal ton of questions, so I'll just jump in. Maybe some of you have the information I seek: * Any news whether the upcoming release _Valentine_ will be released stateside or just in Europe? * What is a CD tree, and how does it work? * Is it too late to get in on the APS video I've read so much about. I saw the contents listing, and it sounds amazing. Some of it I have, and some of it I don't. * Where are the member profiles? I'd love to read them if I could only find them. * What does PAL mean inthe context of Japanese viseos. Does it have something to do with the type of VCR needed to play them? Sorry if this sounds "last week," but that's when I first tried to post it. Anyway, I think "Sensation" is a great name for the box set. It's accessible, has no meaning (at least none that I'm aware of) for other artists/groups the way "Rock of Ages" does, and it is rich with other layers of meaning the same way TTOIA was with the RM box set. It works well as a title. Yesterday I ordered checks with topiaries on them. "Just like Hollywood . . . ." Do any of you integrate your RM/Ferry obsessions into your work? I teach college English, and I find myself working him into my handouts and examples on the board. Last week the class even discussed some of the lyrics to "Love is the Drug" as a segway into an essay we read on phermones and oxytocin called "The Chemistry of Love." None of my students has the slighest idea who BF is, but it doesn't deter me a bit. If they ask who he is, and some occasionally do, I say, "He's the coolest man in music." Thnaks to all of you who posted reviews of the ATBG performances. I was unable to get to a show when he was in the states because the tour didn't stop anywhere near me, and I was too "economically challenged" to fly to Washington D.C. (we're basically living on one income at the moment while I stay home with my baby). But your wonderful accounts were almost like being there. Thanks for sharing the whole experience. I've seen Ferry only twice, in '88 and '95 (both in Atlanta) and can't even fathom seeing him 90 times like Johnny Reece. I'm so envious! I've never tried to get backstage at any concert I've gone to. I just assumed, I guess, that I would be turned away. But several of you seemed to say that Ferry does sign a few autographs after the show. Just for future reference, how do I go about getting through security next time? Thanks for everyone's help in getting me on the list (Kicki and Mr. Gresham in particular). With all the technical difficulties, a less stubborn person might have just given up. But so far it's been worth the hassle. As for Ferry, "even Zarathustra . . . could believe in [him]."
