I have found that some people on the Avalon list have a tendency to make things that weren't meant to be ugly, ugly. Though most of our list members are witty and intelligent, you have a few who are always looking to start a fight. They tend to look before they leap, if you know what I mean. Shame about my Hotel (swinging cats not permitted) but no matter. Out and about taking photos, and sitting in Cafes, gazing out of windows, overlooking the Seine, smoking, desperately trying to be decadent and artisan. ("Here, as I sit, at this empty Cafe"...) Nearly succeeded, though sipping a 'grande Cafe-au-Lait' instead of an Espresso gave the game away. Must try harder. 7th February, Paris... I hate the 7th. Always have - it's my unlucky number, and this is proved by me finding out that tonights Gig by Emiliana Torrini is Sold Out, after spending some 2 hours (in the rain) trying to find the damn venue (no thanks to One Little Indian records who gave me the wrong address of where one of their own artists was playing). They say travel broadens the mind, and new experiences and knowledge are gained, and this is patently correct, as I discover that Europe has a monsoon season, and it's now, and it's hellbent on following me around. 8th February, Antwerp - Elisabethzaal.... Thought I'd escaped the monsoon but it tricked me and caught me when I ventured out to find the venue where Bryan Ferry plays tonight... Checked my bearings, and squelched back to the hotel. From here on in - you know the details of the gig - which Han posted yesterday. An excellent gig as Han said, though shorter as 2 songs were dropped. New Girl in the Quartet - Nathalia (replacing Catherine). A couple of strange moments during the gig as Bry forgot the words - twice ! A 'slight stumble' during ATGB, and a repeated line in OOTB - my God, the man is human ! Excellent to meet up with everyone, many drinks/opinions on BF/Roxy afterwards in the Bar. Andy Mol said he may attempt to attend Brussels the following evening, if he can get hold of a ticket. And Han - you are being too modest - well done to you for being the first person from the audience to reach the front as LST begins - no mean feat from about 9 rows back. Did you used to be an olympic runner ? Anton directs and produces the Video of Han mobbing the maestro outside following the Gig, and lets slip the nugget of information that he also has 10 minutes of film of Han, dancing. This will be essential footage for 'APS 2'. Also, in case photographic evidence serves to incriminate me later, I will admit here and now that I wore White Socks to this Gig. Deliberately. 9th February, Brussels - 'Cirque Royal'... This was exactly the same 'set order' from Antwerp - the only way this differs from Shows I had previously seen (Dec, 99) is that ATGB is now 'midset' and not at the close of the Gig. Violins etc much improved 'mix-wise' tonight - a blistering 'Out Of The Blue' finale with all 4 girls playing, on their feet. . Also, 'Chance Meeting' was the best i'd heard it so far. Stunning. I really love those 'swerving' violins...As soon as 'Strand' had finished - I ran like the wind into the foyer - and 'would you believe' it - the poster advertising the Gig for the evening literally fell off the front door, and into my arms. Sort of. I knew Bry & crew would be a while, so had time for a swift Beer across the road before joining the increasing throng at the Stage Door. Whilst (im)patiently waiting - Andy Mol appears - yep, he'd made it all the way from Holland - good to see you again, Andy (but how did you know where I'd be ?). Decided to get that nights 'Gig Poster' signed - a nice little souvenir - and first of all I asked the lovely Rosie to sign the Poster, and then she posed for Pics with myself and Andy. I asked her for the title of the song the quartet plays at the beginning (2nd number in) but she sheepishly admitted she didn't know the title ! Then Bry appeared in a flash - so a quick signature here and there, and more Pics, of course, on the steps of the Tour Bus. (God, I really hope these Pics come out !). At this point - any sane person would have retired to the local Bar a happy man - but there was one more signature I really wanted. After all, Julia hadn't appeared yet (well, can you blame me ?). She eventually surfaced, signed the Poster and chatted awhile, and Andy very kindly took a couple of Pics at the same time. Thanks Andy, I am forever in your debt (as long as the pics come out !). As most of you know from the various 'Set Lists' that many of us have 'procured' along the way on the Tour - they all seem to start with 'Nightfall' - which is the first 'Band' number (3rd one in). I didn't know the title of the piece that Julia plays (solo Harp) at the very beginning - apparently it translates as 'Song Of The Night' or something similar. I can't remember the proper French title which she told me, (three times), as for obvious reasons my brain had suddenly stopped working at this point. Now very happy, and babbling incoherently (and probably dribbling too) myself and Andy retired to the local Bar, met up with a few Brussels-Ferryites and swopped many stories of tracks/Gigs over many Beers... (Andy - hope you made it to your meeting in the Hague at 9am...) A great, great night... 10th February - today - homeward bound to London... Needless to say, listened to various Ferry/Roxy tapes on the Walkman on the journey home on Eurostar. Kept an eagle-eye on my Bag in case anyone risked certain death by venturing within a few yards of my Poster. They didn't dare. Arrived home about 3pm, happy in the knowledge that my 90th Ferry/Roxy Gig is behind me. Looking forward to Paris 9th March when the 'Avalonia Eurostar Special' hits the tracks...got the Gig tickets yet, Martinot ? - give me details, please ! And - good work Mr. O'Brien - be sure to let us all know on ticket details re April - another 'Avalonia meet-up', perchance ? And Kicki - if my Pics turn out OK I'll mail them to you...and so glad you loved the Gig in Stockholm... And Han - thanks for the CDs... And finally, just in case you're all wondering - I had a really good, really good, really good time. 'Ligging frenzy', I think they call it. I didn't know the title of the piece that Julia plays solo Harp) at the very beginning - apparently it translates as 'Song Of The Night' or something similar. In fact, nobody does but the list administrators, webmasters, or ISPs whose servers are being used to relay all of this email around. Web communities are open to the opinions of anyone who cares to contribute. If someone says something personally offensive to you, you can insult them back but you can't kick 'em out (well maybe you could try to sue them). And one more thing - there's little tolerance for witchhunts!
