They were, and remain, very close friends apparently, and were both in the last 'beach blanket' type of movie that she was able to make. For some reason, the show wasn't scheduled to start until 9.30 PM. That meant that there was plenty of time for the Swedish Avalonians to meet and have dinner. Together with my lovely hosts, listmember Tom Wedberg and his wife, and their friend, I met Alexander Papazoglu and his father in a restaurant, where we ate and had a nice chat about important subjects like "My favourite lyric" and "The worst solorecord". The Concert House was sold out, cirka 1600 people in the audience. The show didn't start until nearly 9.45, which of course made me wonder if Ferry's recent cold was worse. I was very determined to write the setlist down and take notes throughout the show, but when the harpist started playing I threw my pen away - I felt this was going to be a very emotional evening, and I wanted to enjoy it in the fullest without having to do secreterial work. I did not start to cry when Ferry finally came on stage. I just felt very happy to be where I was... The voice? Well, it is not the same as in 1979 or 1982. He sounded pretty much like he does on the latest record, which I guess I was expecting, but at the same time I was a trifle disappointed. I'm not agreeing with Avalonians who thinks that he sings better than ever, or just as good as before, neither am I saying that he sang like shit. It just isn't the same anymore, and how can it be? Ferry's 54 now. So is his voice. The first big thrill came when it was time for Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. I closed my eyes, clasped my hands and sang every word (not so loud that people around me were complaining though). My heart swelled. Veeery emotional and a great performance from everybody on stage. I wasn't prepared for my reaction upon hearing Chance Meeting, when I almost started to cry. I have always liked this song, but never considered it one of my favourites. Hearing it now I almost lost it. It's nearly 18 years since I last saw Bryan Ferry on stage; "well, how are you, how have you been, it's a long time since we last met". The orchestra played it beautifully, like it was written especially for them. And I sat there so full of emotions I almost ached! The Only Face with Ferry on piano was very good, and I loved the trumpet solo at the end. I am in fact beginning to appreciate quite a few songs from Mamouna...! I thought that Ferry was going to introduce the song saying it was about Greta Garbo, which would be fitting since Greta Garbo was born in Stockholm and is now buried there, but he didn't. He didn't really say much at all between songs. He did thank us for being "such a wonderful audience" though... Most of the material from As Time Goes By sounded great, but they never really sparkled. Where or When was of course beautiful, but I was sort of still in a spin from the Chance Meeting-experience. It was hard to top that. And even though I like the 30's songs very much, the Roxysongs will always be number 1 for me. However - Avalon and Jealous Guy felt very redundant. The crowd seemed to love every minute of them, but I thought Ferry was just going through the motions, and I have heard them too many times to appreciate them now. Street Life sounded crisp and cool, and I was very surprised that Ferry was able to bring such nerve into Love is the Drug. Casanova was also a great performance, although Ferry must have sung it a thousand times or more. It still sounded new. Bittersweet was beautiful and haunting. I was a tiny, tiny bit disappointed in Sunset - I thought that number would move me to tears, but that didn't happen. Out of the Blue was of course brilliant with the violinsolo at the end. The audience rose to a standing ovation after that masterpiece! When we got to Let's Stick Together everybody was on their feet, dancing like crazy. We sang really loud and did our best to hoot and holler like Jerry Hall. Ferry looked very pleased! Do the strand was one of the two encores, during which we also danced and sang a lot. The show was really great, but right after I was a bit dazed and confused and too full of what had just happened. I found it hard to decide wheter I wanted to buy some of the crappy merchandise (settled for the programme) or whether I just wanted to go home and pass out. The thought of trying to find out if we could meet Ferry for an autograph and a photo was almost terrifying - would I be able to speak, let alone in another language than my own? I am glad to say that we did go for the quest of the holy stage entrance, where some 15 fans were already waiting. Everything started to fell veeery surreal - was I finally, after all these years, really going to meet The Maestro Himself?!? It was like a scenario from a dream! One of the guys from the Swedish concertcrew acted very bossy and told us to be really quick in dealing with The Star, "and no pushing!!" - what an idiot. He treated us like screaming teenagers eager to tear the pants of Robbie Williams. It was a big relief and a great thrill to find that Bryan was totally relaxed and very charming. He looked tanned and healthy and in fact younger than he had on stage. I told him what I had planned to shout during the show: "You are still beautiful, Mr Ferry!" He laughed and thanked me. I also said that Chance Meeting was fabulous, and he agreed and said something about how well it was orchestrated. I asked him if he "would mind terribly to have your photo taken with me?" (yeah, I know, really sucking up!) which he of course didn't :-D I will upload it to the site it as soon as I can, and I'm praying to God that it will be a nice photo! The only thing I regret is that I didn't kiss his cheek, but I simply did not have the nerve to do it. Neither did I tell him about my website or this list - I just felt that this was not the place nor the time to try to explain the finer points of Internet communication and communities. My intellectual capacity was not on top either... And then I stumbled out... what a night!! /Kicki G - ------------------------ Kicki Gustafsson, Östersunds-Posten 063-16 16 51 http://www.op.se http://www.torget.se/users/k/KickiG (privat hemsida) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2000 18:43:40 EST From: JRUTHL123@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Review Stockholm Kicki-- What fun! I've just discovered the Streambox Ripper (www.streambox.com) and was wondering if any of the advanced computer people on this list know if this program can record live streaming audio (or the audio portion of an audio/video concert) ... or is it just for converting already downloadable RA to MP3? As with all Spitting Image humour, it was hardly subtle. I also remember rubberfaced comedian (I use the term loosely) Phil Cool doing an excruciating impression of the Cool Ruler on his TV show. Concentrated on the movements rather than the voice as I recall. Another fill for APS2 would have to be that excellent comedic Chairman Mao / Virginia Plain take off from the Big Train TV series...
