The Frenchman turned American who scandalized the New York Amory show with a urinal and spent the latter 1/2 of his career reproducing his own works in miniature. His avant-gardism was eons beyond any of the so-called "modernists" of the early 20th century, including the Dadaists and surrealists, and really paved the way for the conceptual art of the 1960's and 70's, with it's fascination with language as artistic meaning. Marcel Duchamp was incredibly enamoured with what he considered to be the "delay" imposed by language. Language always signifieds more language, which presented a "delay" to true meaning. His famous piece, "The Large Glass," or "The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even," was envisioned as a "delay in glass." There is an interesting image of Duchamp standing in front of the work right here http://www.FreshWidow.com/encounter-room.html. The small machine in the lower panel of the piece is the chocolate grinder, which represented the creation of meaning through language or similarly, the mechanized fulfillment of sexual desire. The "Large Glass" wound up in the collection of Peggy Guggenheim (I think she actually commissioned it). Shortly after its creation, it was cracked. Duchamp actually preferred it cracked and allowed Man Ray to photograph the dust in its cracks. The Large Glass is a fascinating work, and a great deal of art historical research has been done on it. If you want to see an even more disturbing and intriguing work by Duchamp, have a look at Étant Donnés: 1º La Chute D'eau 2º Le Gaz D'éclairage..., or Given: 1 The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gas, which you can see here: http://www.freshwidow.com/etant-donnes2.html (Fresh Widow 3000 is my favorite Duchamp site). Why not sneeze, Rrose Selavey? Now I'm listening to it at work. It's a wonderful peice of music. I'm enjoying "I'm In The Mood For Love," right now. It's charming and nostalgic, like a Raymond Chandler novel or the erstwhile J. ("I'm In The Mood For Love" being the other one.) Ferry's version of this song can reduce me to tears. To *tears*. Ferry was lost inside of it when he opened the tour here in D.C. and the crowd was still and silent as he sang it. Truly one of the most magical moments I've ever witnessed. That feeling of *knowing* someone you know you've never met before but whose soul has somehow overlapped with yours--it's disorienting and like a homecoming at the same time. And in addition to capturing that elusive and delicate feeling, Ferry's rendition adds the bittersweet tinge of melancholy which undergirds all of his best work. Ah, man, there is NOTHING like it. But, don't worry. I'm used to being the only person to hold a particular opinion and I realize tastes vary widely. > exotica sounds in the background. They're crucifying me again! Honestly, I LOVE the golden age of Hollywood glamour: the movies and music of the 1st half of the twentieth century. But I have to say that for me it's all style - no substance, no heartstrings. I can't be made to feel sad by this era. It was all too glamourous and self-conscious. The old movies with their lushly orchestrated songs, even the really sad ones, were mainly just a showcase for beautiful costumes, sets, and newly emerging moviemaking skills. There are very few old movies or songs that make me cry. All they evoke with me is a sort of amusement at their formal charms, which ATGB has a great deal of, with the exception of Where or When. On the other hand, "If There Is Something" can move me to tears. The last time I was in WHS there was no trace whatsoever that ATGB had even been on the shelves at all. The place to go is HMV. They have everything, and are a lot more knowledgeable than staff in Woolies, WHS or Our Price. Sometimes I'm tempted to buy another copy just for the hell of it. So then does this not make it all the more criminal that Ferry's album took two weeks to get into Woolworths? Hmmmnnnnn. Should you light that fire again ? Burn the candle ? I suspect you'll really blow your cool and Colleen will just fly off the handle. But now the marriage vow is ...very sacred. I think the temptation to put these songs in some sort of pecking order deflects attention from the quality of the album as a whole. The talent on offer here has made me consider that Bryan Ferry has simply wasted 15 years since the emotionless perfection of Boys and Girls. ATGB should have been the follow up to that album if he was really going to fulfil his potential in the 80's and 90's. This is not to say that he hasn't produced great stuff in that period, but it wasn't really different enough. In terms of Ferry solo albums I would rank this second best only to B&G's, and it's far superior to ATAP,LST,IYM, Bete Noire, Taxi & Mamouna. Even the excellent BSB is struggling to be better than ATGB and Foolish Things likewise. So I,m not sure we should be so cool about ATGB, this is Ferry at his solo best and a quite magnificent album for someone in the later stages of his career. The gold disc is a minor triumph as his commercial career had been written off by some. Yes Where or When and IITMFL are great tracks but the overall quality is as good as he's achieved since B&G. Each to their own view of course.................... From Martin, Lets be cool about it. Oh we're cool about it now. At the back end of the last millennium it was whimsically suggested that Colleen and I would grace the alter in Y2K. As my gucci slippers and her (I hope) continental style strasse thigh-boots sit side-by-side the roaring fire in our bungalow ranch style canadian club love dreamhome, as we savour the high notes of the Cool Ruler's gold disc, (and fragrantly sigh at the leaden cuts) those doubters might care to review my comments to the list last November...
