I know the BBC have given him the most coverage, but the way they don't promote it, or muck around with the schedules is appalling (the Hootenanny programme was actually 30 minutes longer than it was listed in the Radio Times). I tell you this - they don't do the same with sports programmes and news (I remember the Beeb cutting off The Who midway through a performance on the 1988 Brit Awards so they could go to the news on time). Music on the UK's five main channels is scarce enough as it is. Moan moan moan...... SimonG >>> "Richard Swift" 01/17 11:11 pm >>> I share your frustration that this latest appearance wasn't more widely publicised - it's by sheer good fortune that I came to record it. But before we knock the BBC too much reflect on who it is who has given Bryan the most promotion - Channel 4 - nothing, Channel 5 - zilch, ITV - one song on the 'Nobel' concert and a late night profile with nothing from the new album. BBC Radio - two one hour specials in 1999, the Golders Green concert, guest appearance on Jools Holland's radio show, Net Aid (in part), just about the only radio airplay for ATGB the single ('A' list) and lengthy inclusion in Radio 2's playlist for the album (right up to Christmas on the 'C' list). This would prevent future scares like the Y2K bug scare, because nobody would be setting dates on any computers anymore, except for fun. He used to host an eclectic music show on BBC Radio Nottingham (Extravaganza, but it was the '70's) from c. '76 to '79. I was a bit of a groupie and knew him a little back then. I have not posted in a while and when I did I had a problem with my ISP ( have fixed the problem). Well anyway... Have listed intently to the boots of the Stockholm 76, Boston 75 and the BBC sessions since December. It has been a revelation. Stockholm was very good. I especially liked on the Boston 2 disk Eno's Baby's on Fire and I'll come running. I play those very loud. Are those really live tracks? Sounds like studio recordings to me. I was about to throw out some newspapers that had accumulated in the last couple of weeks. I just HAPPENED to glance thru the January 9th edition of the Chicago Sun-Times which I had not read. At the bottom of page 13E in the Showcase section was a review of As Time Goes By by Lloyd Sachs. For non Chicagoians, Mr. Sachs is a noted Jazz critic. He is very knowledgeable and his reviews are frequently insightful. Well it was to my surprise that he reviewed ATGB AND he LIKED IT. He makes the obligatory referenses to Sinatra, but he also has a knowledge of Roxy Music and Bryan's solo work. He mentioned that when he first heard the disc he had serious reservations. However upon further listening he founds lots to like. He stated that ATGB was recorded by Bryan with relative speed, when it became apparent the the NEXT ROXY MUSIC album, five years in the making was not going to be finished in time for 2000. So does Mr. Sachs know something that has not been previously mentioned? He also states that he had interviewed Bryan in a hotel romm in the early 80's ( Chicago ???) and they both talked of Frank Sinatra. He stated that Bryan wanted to make a Frank Sinatra album. He concludes the review by stating: "In the end, he (Bryan) can't hold down his eternal sense of possibilty-which, with that Roxy Music album BOUND TO COME OUT SOONER OR LATER, is just as it should be. Well I'm so glad that I did not throw this away. I think you might be able to access the entire review by visiting the sun-times website at www.suntimes.com To my fellow Chicago Avalonians, I have yet to see ANY press, positive or negative about ATGB since it's release until Sach's review. I did not even see a review of the concert in November. The biggest tragedy is that WXRT Radio, the reason that I heard Roxy in the first place, has not played any selections off of ATBG. It should be noted that XRT promoted the November concert, but not one selection was played not even from Terri Hemmert, XRT DJ, and she is a big Roxy fan. After the concert, and I asked her to play something the next day. Yes, she gussed about it the next day, but she played something from Flesh and Blood. I was and still am very disappointed at them for this. One more thing. Greg Kot, the pop music critic for the Chicago Tribune in his recap of the top music events in Chicago for 1999 said the following: BEST-DRESSED: Ever-dapper Bryan Ferry was nearly upstaged by a sting section worthy of Victoria's Secret Nov. 11 at the Riviera. Yeah, I'll almost agree with that. The only thing that could have topped them was Bryan's jacket with the diamond buttons. Just too cool!
