If you look back through Eno involved albums (his own, Bowie, Talking Heads, U2 etc) you'll see some of these names appear. Even though Eno wasn't deeply involved (one day of sessions according to reports) he does have a very clever way of describing sounds, after all he is creative and unconventional, and that obviously rubs off (if you haven't read his book A YEAR WITH SWOLLEN APPENDICES you should, it's fantastic and very revealing). Others are just plain old instruments and keyboards. I've given more on what I know below..... Witch Ben Nevis Oberheim Choirtron Vocoder - made famous by Peter Frampton and Herbie Hancock, it's that weird tube that you stick in your mouth that has the sound coming down it, and when you move your mouth it sounds all strange. Vidor Juno Prophet - a keyboard/synth type thing Jupiter Berlin piano Gondola Frog Astrologer Scratch Wah Wah - a guitar effect, very popular with Hendrix wannabes and The Stone Roses Hook Not to mention the guitars: Mood gtr Mutron gtr Gull gtr Atmos gtr Riff gtr Card gtr Latin gtr Swamp gtr Arab gtr Drift gtr Probe gtr Trace gtr These are all probably self explanitory when listening to the tracks. These names will have come about during recording to describe the sound of that particular guitar so it could be written down on the track sheet (a track sheet is used during recording sessions and lists what all the various tracks on multitrack tape contain - kick, snare, tom 1, tom 2, vox1, b-vox, bass, keys, etc....for later reference and the eventual mixing). These names give a little insight into how these things are recorded and what effect Bryan and Robin Trower were trying to achieve. No, John is right, they are 2 different devices. They both involve blowing into a mouthpiece but a Vocoder is more of a synthesized effect, and can be heard on ELO's Mr. Blue Sky , it has more of a "robot sound" quality to it. The other effect is called a "Talk Box" and the most famous one was the Electro Harmonix Golden Throat. You can hear this on Frampton Comes Alive, Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" and Aerosmith's "Walk this Way" and "Sweet Emotion". It has a much sweeter sound to it IMO, but they both have their place. They are inCREDibly slow and disorg'd. Try hmv.co.uk (in the UK) or dependable ol' amazon.com. Also, fightdivx.com is the Valhalla for net coupons, including a slew for barnesandnoble.com. Media cost is $3, postage is $1 to $3.20, depending on if you want First Class or Priority. My color printer is not the greatest, and like Bruce, I find putting the inserts together to be kind of a pain; therefore, if you'd like to print your own, I'll knock $1 off the price and send you the JPEGs. As stated here previously, Bryan didn't have the lyrics yet, so he just sings "da da dee, da da da" throughout the track. Not only that, the mumblings are multi-tracked. It's like a Roxy Music from a parallel universe. On a related note, I listened to Manifesto the other day, and kept hearing Monquiboy's lyrics ("And if you find banana . . ."). Is this list ruining Roxy Music for me? - -- jÏm ®¤§ÊÑÇüttêr - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 23:00:16 -0500 From: Jeff Kay Subject: Re: [AVALON] More info Music devices Tape loops anyone, phase?
