The music's driven beat imparts a sense of urgency and need. The metallic mind-searing sizzles seem to heighten and burn into self-awareness. That is, a musical transition leading to lyrical introspection. Paraphrased: Don't ask me why my heart is breaking. Trouble in mind, I'm tired of wanting. Don't ask me why my heart is yearning. Don't get me wrong this time, my heart is breaking some other spring sometime. Clear, simple lyrics exploring intricate human emotion. Sophisticated musical composition facilitating the mood. Very circular - Is our driver physical or psychological? Very Ferry. Très élégant. Cryptic? My half penny. I can't remember what it was called now. I made a tape of it then (by putting the microphone in front of the radio) but I can't find it now. I have been trying to remember what he chose. The only track that was definitely the same was Will You Still Love Me Tommorrow. He also chose an Ike and Tina number: it might have been River Deep but their other number I'll Never Need More Than This also seems familiar. I'm pretty sure that he also chose Be My Baby. If it wasn't this then it was another Spector girl band song. His final selection was Layla and I remember that he specified the second part with the piano. Presumably the only song missing was "Jealous Guy" - infuriating to see good live performances omitted but other singers miming to records (Martine McCutcheon) included. A few people commented that the live broadcast of ATGB on new year's eve was a bit of a shambles - presumably tonights broadcast was edited to use the best camera shots etc. because it looked and sounded good to me. A few artistes, including Bryan, introduced a song of the century in snippets filmed separately on the day, saying why the song was special to them. Bryan's song was ATGB. Bryan sang the first two songs swathed in what appeared to be a dark grey or black overcoat although it could have been the dark green one sported on tour. He also wore tan gloves and the compulsory scarf. The overcoat was off by the time he got to LST. It did look like a very cold night there. I'm beginning to like it a lot, too. For seem reason, Bryan seems to be avoiding his mid-70s vocal style now and sounds once again like the guy who sang the first Roxy album. A slightly thin, animated warble for the most part, and some back-of-the-throat gruffness for one line: 'Come on, come on, let's stick together.' It reminded me of the louder moments towards the end of Re-Make/Re-Model. It wasn't off key as such, just odd and distinctive. I was struck by how quietly he sang throughout. Much as I usually dread yet another rendition of Jealous Guy performance, I'd have liked to see and hear Phil play his bit - but the Beeb didn't show it this time around. And there was a third show in 1986 - My Top Ten, with Andy Peebles, with Bryan choosing ten of his favourites again. Will You Love Me Tomorrow made the list for the third time. Prince, doing Kiss. Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene was there, with Sexual Healing and What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. No Neil Young, but Lou Reed it with What Goes On and so did Dylan, with his own recording of Mr. Tambourine Man. Bryan chose the original version of Feel the Need - was it the Spinners or the Emeralds or someone else entirely? I always get this wrong. It sounds fantastic, anyway - it's laid back but more powerful than his own recording of it. Bryan mentioned that this was the first track on which he was made aware of Andy Newmark's playing. There was also Shame, Shame, Shame - not the Jimmy Reed song that Bryan has covered but something entirely different by Shirley & Co. There was also Billie Holiday ("My favourite singer," said Bryan) singing The Man I Love. I recorded the whole programme and have been looking for the tape for a few weeks now - no luck. It'll turn up.
