I spent yesterday reviewing endless hours of video footage looking for Bryan snippets, and here's my findings and thoughts.... Obviously the Hootenanny was the main thing (no puns thankyou). Starting off with Let's Stick Together, Bryan seeming a bit unsure at first but his harmonica playing got him warmed up. Where Or When was sorely lacking Bryan's own musicians, and LITD sounded lifeless and limp. the highloght was the verse he took in Midnight Special with the boom of In Your Mind/Manifesto in his voice, it's a shame he didn't lead that instead of Van Morrisson (I'm sorry but I don't like him). As for Greenwich, I have so far gone through 10 hours and found a bungled ATGB (bungled by the BBC's editing, not by the musicians) and 2 minutes of Jealous Guy (from "I was dreaming of the past" to the end of the sax solo). Is there more? That remains to be seen. Go to go, very busy. Although the questing nature of the American pioneer may indeed play a role in the preponderance of North Americans on this list (although in this specific context, we are speaking more properly of people who reside in the United States), it's probably got more to do with the fact that there are simply a lot more of the US folk around. To wit, the 1998 United Nation population figures: United Kingdom 58,649,000 United States of America 274,028,000 I suspect that our UK friends are in fact over-represented in the membership of this list, proportionally speaking. You know it was sure that ATGB wasn't going to rip the charts. How could it? To ask for radio to break Bryan out again is a lost cause. As I'm not very aware of the state of radio in the UK I can't comment on how it could make or break him there, I do know that his radio success here is about as good as a snowball's chance of getting through hell. Anybody who meets up with Bryan here ain't going to meet up with him up and down on the dial. I think you have to be sort of enterprising. For his new work and direction, I just hope Bryan goes with the "heart" rather than with "demographics". From what he's done with ATGB it seems he's doing like he always does... that is...not following the pack. What's really cool is that those people who maybe were making out and "groovin" (have to use this word- haven't used it in a long time) to those 30's era songs he's singing now are dancin' the night away in their 80's or 90's now. He's making them feel good and he's also given us young'uns an image in sound of the time back then. I like that. Got to hand it to him. By doing what he wants he covers all his constiuencies! ATGB, his last work, goes great with his ironic sense that we heard on the early works with Roxy. This time around I don't think he's putting anybody on and we're on for another nice ride through Ferryland. By which time all this effort he's putting in now to raise his profile will be wasted. And next to no one will buy it. My heart says the British public have been reminded that Bryan Ferry is still making music, still very F**ing cool indeed, has done a mass of great songs like LST and LITD and Jealous Guy. Friends who know I'm a fan have said "He's been on the telly a lot recently". My heart says he still is a STAR. He has star quality. So come on Bryan. Break free of the chains of perfection, pick the radio friendly songs as singles BEFORE you're next LP comes out which you will of course do on schedule for late 2000. Get a record company that believes in you and you never know what might happen. Rather strangely Ferrys credibility seems to have emerged intact from the last 15 years and the new album has gained critical acclaim. As has the Tour - I've yet to see a bad review. Having said that, I like him a lot and would stand behind either of his last 2 albums ("Weight" or "Come in and Burn") as being very much worth a listen or 5. Never have seen him live (except with Black Flag!) but I've heard lots of excellent things about the live show. I lack any grounds to do a comparison regarding live VS studio, but his recorded output that I've heard (and have) features a strong, smart band who can play as hard and heavy as anyone, without resorting to cliche, and have a great degree of finesse at their disposal, over which Henry browbeats the human race (and himself) for it's (and his) shortcomings, occasionally with a great sense of humor. Be well. Back to lurking; Erik Simpson NP; the 7 CD "Complete Funhouse Sessions" by the Stooges. Up until now, I thought the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds Sessions" was the ultimate archival treasure chest, squeezing a 4 disc set out of one 30 min album. This beats it hands down, with 7 CDs from one 38 min album. Only 2 unreleased tracks alongside the prevously released 7. It includes every take and false start (with the occasional bit of studio chatter thrown in for good measure). I am overwhelmed. Totally indulgent and totally essential at the same time. (I don't need any blank tapes. Or money. When I send it out I'll mail you individually with payment details.> "The Avalon video "A Perfumed Sigh" has now been finished and is ready for distribution to anyone on the list who wishes to have a copy. (I've ordered 40 UK/Euro style and 40 US style from Jason Gibbs' elves. Other formats can be made up.) Recent subscr*bers unaware of this project should know that about a year ago we asked Avalonions to mail their recordings of TV appearances of Roxy and Bryan to me ; we have tried to use only material not previously shown on the 5 official RM/BF videos. It is essentially a scrapbook of 33 items, either performances, interviews or rare promos, although we have included one celebrated piece that could loosely be described as drama. The quality is variable - transfering video to different formats and back again necessitates a dimunition in picture clarity - yet I believe "A Perfumed Sigh" is still a more thrilling and comprehensive collection than "Total Recall." It should be stressed that this is only available to our community and is not a profit-making project. Here's how we'll do it : 1. Mail me direct with the Subject title : "APS : Order" 2. Give me your Name and Postal address including Postcode/Zip (and country.) 3. I'll email reply acknowledging your order and giving you my address for payment and methods of payment. 4. Cost. £8 Europe. $15 Non-Europe. 5. Don't bother sending a pre-stamped envelope or anything like that . 6. If you were one of the kind lenders of tapes please put on your email exactly what you sent me and I'll return them with a FREE copy of APS. Hope that covers everything and I hope you find the long wait worthwhile. Martino PS I'll repeat this message one or two times over the next fortnight in case people miss it." -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 20:30:15 -0500 From: "valerie" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Henry Rollins -- Yeah? hello all I'm a lurker too, usually, but I have to add something about Henry Rollins. I've seen his spoken-word shows a couple of times, and he's very intense and very entertaining! Just saw him at Westbeth in NYC and he did a 2 1/2 hour talkathon. He told some great stories about his life, his experiences being in his band, and about being in NYC vs. being in California. He said people on the street in NYC frequently walk up to him and yell, "HEY! YOU'RE THAT LIAR GUY, AREN'T YOU? " and then proceed to yell the song at him. Pretty funny. Valerie who saw BF in NYC recently too...he wasn't as amusing as Rollins but has a much better singing voice, LOL - -----Original Message----- From: SIMPSON ERIK To: avalon@smoe.org Date: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 5:22 PM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Henry Rollins -- Yeah? >Bahi wrote: > >> I was after some squeaky-clean Rollins album recommendations, that's all. > >Wow; > >One of the last things I would expect to find on this list is any >mention of Henry Rollins. Whatever. I used to get MM (that's Melody Maker, sofistikated Amerikans) in the late 70's- early 80's - after a while, I couldn't take it anymore. It was 'Flavour of the Month Club' Anyone who could get on the charts was the best thing that ever happened to pop music, a classic one-of-a-kind, amazing and fabulous. Including Bananarama-lama-ding-dong. Hey, I loved Adam Ant... then. (No flames please, he was good enough for Tibbs) Jim, I know that was tongue-in-cheek, but I think that in the UK, at least, anything new is good, then it's good-bye. - - How many great new artists can there be every month? How many lasted? (Cliff R. aside) remembering that we sent the Sparks and Stray Cats across the pond to get famous, - H. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 23:17:27 -0500 From: "eRacerX" Subject: [AVALON] Fw: (TV) Christgau Article Hi - a little 'leak' from the only other list I participate in, Marquee Moon: (I think BF gets a nod, also) - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Strell" To: Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 5:38 PM Subject: (TV) Christgau Article > Here's the last paragraph of Robert Christgau's article in this week's Village > Voice.
