For small amounts, most UK banks charge so much for an International Money Order that it's worth the risk of losing the cash rather than further enriching those cats in suits and ties... Last monday I rushed out and bought tickets for two of Bryan's concerts here; one in Dortmund on Feb 12 and one in Duesseldorf on Feb 24. I'm so happy: I managed to get front row seats for both! The Duesseldorf Philipshalle is also the place where I saw my first BF concert (well, actually it was the first concert experience of my life - I was 14 then) on Nov 28 1988. In the early summer of 88 I bought my first BF album (Bête Noire) and was hooked ever since. I spent a glorious summer holiday in Italy with BN and Boys & Girls back to back on my Walkman and then discovered Bryan was on tour in the autumn. The 88 concert was unforgettable; me standing (those were the days...) in the front, people pushing from behind when the lights went down, very strange music (Nimrod) filling the hall, incense wafting through the air - I was close to fainting when Bryan finally came on stage. He smiled directly to me (or so I imagine) during one of the songs. Afterwards, I bought up nearly all the merchandise available in the foyer, including the programme and a giant poster (b&w close-up also featured in the middle part of the programme, the one where he gazes into the camera). Later, I came across a bootleg video of exactly that show, it's a nice reminder of the concert, though I can't make out the back of my head in the first row. Next time I saw him was on Oct 16 1993 when he appeared at an RTL Radio awards show in Dortmund. For Bryan, I endured hours of entertainment by the likes of David Hasselhoff, Barry Ryan and Desmond Dekker before he finally came on and sang "Spell on you", "Girl of my best friend" and "Will you love me tomorrow". He was awarded a prize in the field of "cover versions", doubtlessly he would have preferred the "readymades award"... In 94 I saw him on the Mamouna tour in Cologne (Oct 17): a brilliant show (though I can't imagine a good reason for the cut of his jacket, why was it that short?...) and at the end I gathered up some of the glitter he had thrown from his pocket (his hands had touched it!) and also got the set list (his foot had stood on it - you can still make out the imprint!). The last time I saw him in concert was on Nov 11 95: Night of the Proms in Dortmund. As in 93, it was hard work waiting for Bryan to sing; he was the headliner and came on last. Before him were Andrea Bocelli, Al Jarreau and that singer from Supertramp, all very tedious. Bryan wore a stunning red coat (the one from the More Than This back and inner booklet), had amazingly long hair and performed what he called "the popular mainstream tracks" in the recent Record Collector interview: Slave to love, Avalon, Let's stick together and in the end he sang Hey Jude with all the other artists (but he had to read his lyrics from a sheet!). Then they all received flowers, and he threw his into the audience. I couldn't catch it, and afterwards the woman who had wouldn't sell them to me - too bad. Well, I hope I didn't bore you to death with all this, but it was real fun writing it, anyway. By the way, I have quite an extensive archive of scanned articles and photographs unavailable on the various websites (Manzanera's Roxy Archive is getting better and better, isn't it). Kicki, would you like me to send you something to add to your wonderful Avalonsite? Also, I'm so envious of all you British subscribers who are able to see Bryan tonight on this Jools Holland show and tomorrow's Greenwich concert. Lucky you! Happy new year! Memories, memories. I was at the last night of the same tour in Wembley, London (Jan 20, '89) - my first Ferry concert, too. Seeing the smoke and smelling the incense, I couldn't stop grinning. And what a set! Hearing The Bogus Man, Dreamhome, and Ladytron was indescribable. Some of the more sensitive newbies among the audience were probably taken out in stretchers after hearing about the inflatable dolls but some *must* have been converted. I can hardly believe it was almost 10 years ago. The visual splendour of the backdrops, the costumes, the ear-popping *volume*, and that mad guitarist. Bliss. The songs were chosen without a care for record sales or reputation. Bryan played what he liked, and had it played it the way he wanted it, without a care for anyone but himself. Paul Johnson, Chester Kamen, and Andy MacKay all guested that night. At the end, Bryan was ecstatic about what a wonderful tour it had been, and the fans were over the moon about having seen this show, a last-minute addition to the tour. Rattling back to Student Ghetto on the tube, it was easy to separate the traumatised 9 1/2 Weeks posse ("What the hell was *that* about all about? That bloke has two decent songs") from the deluxe and delightful, who glowed quietly in knowing silence. Eye contact. The live recording of While My Heart is Still Beating from that tour is a gem. The way Bryan sings just the one line - Am I still dreaming? - transforms the whole song. Bahi (Who thought the short jacket in '95 - in Cardiff, watching the Trower iteration of the band, standing at the front, grinning again, pretty much failing to ignore the blonde dancing on a speaker stack *right* in front of him - was just the ticket.) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 01:43:50 +0000 From: Peter Dewey Subject: [AVALON] Jools Holland Just watched to TV special, BF played Lets Stick Together, Where or When and LITD, following which he sang with Van Morrison, Lonnie Donegan, Ronnie Wood et al doing Midnight Special. I too was there at this tour, albeit across the Atlantic--but just, in Boston--and outside in 100+ degree heat, which persisted even after sundown. Mr. Ferry began stripping off articles of clothing at the end of every song; who can sleep or stay in formal attire in this heat? I was with a large group of friends, some of whom had tickets on the lawn in back. A few of us who had seats in the pavilion. The lights dimmed and a piercing scream filled my ear--my normally extremely prim and proper best friend. We sang along to all of the songs and it was clear by the waves of enthusiasm ebbing and flowing around us that we were surrounded by those "sensitive newbies." As the last lines of "In Every Dream Home..." echoed from our last row chorus, the people in front of us could not hold it in any longer: "How do you know all of these song?" "Because we're fans," shot back one of my companions. "We never heard these songs before. Does he have any other albums before _Avalon_?" > Rattling back to Student Ghetto on the tube, it was easy to separate > the traumatised 9 1/2 Weeks posse ("What the hell was *that* about all > about?
