So, hi. I'm a Scot, living in Austin, Texas. I've been a fan of the Roxy, Ferry, Eno, Manzanera cabal since the first album, which someone brought out to Bahrain for me the day it was released. Since then, I've had a few remote exploits with the band - popping champagne bottles from the balcony at the Ferry's Albert Hall concert in the 70's - belated apologies if the cork hit you - a wild concert at Green's Playhouse in Glasgow, and meeting Eno at Cyberthon in the early 90's. I would like to hope that Ferry or the reformed Roxy will swing by Austin in 2000 so that once again I can hear them play for my pleasure. I collect alot of boot CDs; I believe this one of the better Roxy shows - by sound quality and strength of the performance. It is from an unknown date and venue form the '79 Manifesto Tour (Maybe London - can anyone help??). This show beats the hell out of the "Denver - Concert Classics". (I've ordered 40 UK/Euro style and 40 US style from Jason Gibbs' elves. Other formats can be made up.) Recent subscr*bers unaware of this project should know that about a year ago we asked Avalonions to mail their recordings of TV appearances of Roxy and Bryan to me ; we have tried to use only material not previously shown on the 5 official RM/BF videos. It is essentially a scrapbook of 33 items, either performances, interviews or rare promos, although we have included one celebrated piece that could loosely be described as drama. The quality is variable - transfering video to different formats and back again necessitates a dimunition in picture clarity - yet I believe "A Perfumed Sigh" is still a more thrilling and comprehensive collection than "Total Recall." It should be stressed that this is only available to our community and is not a profit-making project. Here's how we'll do it : 1. Mail me direct with the Subject title : "APS : Order" 2. (Following Quiet Sun's lack of success in 1970, Phil pretty much packed it in and went to work in a travel agency. Things began to look up when he answered Bryan's music press advert for a guitarist...) The three rejections pictured inside the sleeve include one from Island Records and provide an amusing contrast with the gushing reviews (also quoted) that Quiet Sun attracted years later when it recorded and released Mainstream. Here's the letter from Island. (It appears to be written by Muff Winwood, though signed per pro.) It's undated but the others are from November 1970 so it probably is too. - ---begin Dear Mr. Manzanera, Thanks for dropping in your tape. Unfortunately I didn't think that any of your music is that suitable for our label at the moment. Actually I am not too knocked out with it, it seems to lack a lot of bite. Perhaps the guy who wrote the superb literate hand out should stick with hand outs. Nevertheless I am sorry I can't help but it just didn't happen. Yours sincerely, Island Records Ltd. p.p. Muff Winwood - ---end Two cheers for one Derek Johns of Warner Brothers, who found the tape "very interesting" and wrote to Phil asking to see a Quiet Sun gig or rehearsal. (Third cheer withheld for obvious reasons.) Here are two extracts from 1975 reviews. "Mainstream is probably the most invigorating record you're likely to hear this Summer.. inspired musicianship, total lack of compromise and, most importantly, a sense of feverish excitement and utter dedication." (Sounds) "The most manic and passionate rush of music that has been committed to vinyl so far this year... positively lethal in its uncompromising intensity. I can think of no more than a handful of albums released this year which command your attention as much as this." (Melody Maker) B - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 01:34:03 +0000 From: Bahi Para Subject: [AVALON] Liner Notes Some of the albums imported by US company Voiceprint are listed on a web page (URL above) that also includes some text by the recording artists themselves. Following are some extracts of possible interest here. B Vozero (Phil Manzanera) Vozero comes from intuition and feeling; the heart rather than the head. It reflects my Colombian and British background, my years in Cuba, love won and love lost. The words are drawn from my own experiences, making it my most personal statement. It has taken 25 years to find a way to express myself vocally as well as instrumentally. In Search of Eddie Riff (Andy McKay) It was early spring in 1974. The previous November Roxy Music had released their third album "Stranded" to tremendous critical acclaim and achieved their first UK no.1 album. We had completed a sell out tour and endless TV and press promotion. Our upward rise seemed unstoppable - and all this in spite of gloomy forecasts about the band's future after Eno's departure and Bryan Ferry's rapidly increasing stardom as solo artiste and lead singer. Yet in all this lay the roots of discontent; in the roses of fame, critical acclaim and commercial success, the invisible worm had burrowed. In short things were not as much fun anymore. I needed a break and as seemed entirely normal at the time turned once more to the recording studio. The project that became In Search of Eddie Riff came from a desire to play some relatively uncomplicated saxophone with friends - a kind of musical autobiography (which now seems pretentious since I was only twenty eight). I acknowledged my love of classical music, Motown, fifties rock and roll instrumentals, film music, electronic effects and partly for my wife Jane who I had recently married, country and western. I tried singing, I wrote some tunes, I enjoyed making it; I hope you enjoy listening to it. I have resisted the temptation to remix and have included all the tracks as they were, including the two vocals dropped for the second version. There are also three live tracks in rehearsal for the BBC's In Concert". Resolving Contradictions (Andy MacKay) I visited China in April 1978 and was very impressed - the natural beauty and splendid buildings, the huge numbers of curious but affable people, the food. And then the drab uniformity, the discipline, the palpable oppression and terror? Well no I can't really claim to have picked up on the last one. Was I charmed or was I conned? Since the late sixties Mao's bizarre, original and dangerous cultural revolution had made China, always remote and fascinating to westerners even more secretive and mysterious. Only a little more than a year after the "great helmsman's" increasingly shaky hand finally slipped off the tiller we were able to visit as "foreign friends" what seemed a different world. A world where no one had heard of The Beatles, and where a mini shirt or pair of tight jeans were thought to be bad jokes that had suffered in translation. Madame Mao, the wicked witch of the "gang of four" was thought pretty terrible for having makeup; the contents of her closets were never revealed but no doubt gasped at and purloined in secret. The music, like the culture, was a mixture of the ancient and sublime and the grandiose and vulgar. The contrasts with my world were exhilarating and irresistible. Hence the album was never really about China but about myself and that curious flat period of the late seventies. China became more open and free and more vulgar, until the real nastiness of the regime was revealed in 1989. I don't think I should try and sum up what has happened here since 1978. I made some more "Roxy Music" albums and wondered what it all meant. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1999 18:15:43 -0800 From: Bill Subject: Re: [AVALON] dead ringers for Ferry TEASE!
