Date: Sun, 13 Dec 1998 02:23:00 EST From: JVapor7@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Contest #102: Yes, Dear My Fellow Avalonians, Yes, it is I--the Big, Fat, Puffy, and Unusually Dissolute Vapor. The pants remain unwrinkled as of yet, but the night is young--after all, it's time for the 32nd Annual Avalon Christmas party. I don't know if it's the influence of that fabulous cinematic ersatz Bowie black hole 'Velveeta Mineshaft,' but Avalon is really Busting Loose & Coming Out. Arnie looks splendid in hot pants, Lederhosen and matching anters--sort of a Ruby Starr/ Hank Kingsley look. Bahi Para certainly shines in costume as the world's smartest--and oldest--Teletubby. Eh-oh, Bahi! How delightfully common. And Dawne simply radiates in her Bob Mackie/Cher creation. Gypsy, Tramp, Or Thief, Ms Dawndalion? Perhaps a few more egg-nogs and she'll tell us yet again how she lost her cherry in 'Hollyweird' to the strains of 'Avalon' (He was an Important Man...With A Very Large Studio...blah, blah, blah). And oh so many newcomers! Martin 'Stonking' Stockman makes quite a daring statement, adding a blue ostrich-feather boa to a Brooks Brothers suit--although brown does nothing for that ruddy complexion, dear. Wait--Is that Daniel 'Deep Throat' Atterbom, dressed as the world's largest franfurter? How quizzical. Tell us, Mr D, did the ex get over that relationship-ending psoriasis? And 'Terribly Old' Kicki hurts the eyes in that yellow latex jumpsuit with exposed derriere and raspberry socks. Va-va-voom! Abba has nothing on her. Mick 'Was Everyone Gay And I Didn't Notice?' Humphrey makes an unforgettable Marlene, although after few more drinks there might be a catfight with the always- obtuse-but-still-New-Orleans-Sexy Rexy. Quiet, girls--you each make the same dress different. Lets gather 'round, you Avalon cats n' kittens, for Vapor has a tale to tell. Kicki, come sit upon Santa Vapor's left knee and snuggle up tight. And please, Heather--bending so many genders in that lime-green polyester leisure-suit--put on the cha-cha heels, pull up to the bumper and do that Doggie Dance Of Love, just once more for old time's sake? Ciao, baby, ciao...Now, Kicki, just lower that one strap, a little to the left...yes, yes, that's it...Helene, open another beer, I'll get the 3D camera... Pardon me. A little too much absinthe in the egg-nog. We are here for a contest, after all. You may recall that Vapor has had Personal Contact with Our God, The Host With The Most and That Wizard Of Was, Mr Bryan Ferry. And published Here, For The Very First Time--was it Contest #37?--were actual remarks made to yours truly. What I did not reveal was that Mr Ferry left the room during this Brief Encounter--apparently to get medicated (a shot in the 'bum,' as you English lads and lassies put it)--and left Vapor alone to his own devices for about ten minutes. I suddenly noticed that lining the back wall of the studio we were situated in were a number of multi-track tapes, and possessing a prying mind, I scribbled down as many of the unfamiliar titles as I could. Were they legendary 'Horoscope' tracks? Roxy out-takes? Songs never heard, never finished? I don't know, because Mr Ferry refused to acknowledge ANY of the titles upon his return. So for the purposes of Our Contest #146, I want you to do the following: write lyrics for these mystery titles I've pondered over the last few years. Yes, I am asking the unthinkable--create faux Roxy/Ferry word-poems! Sacrilege perhaps, but fun, no? And this is what I pledge: sometime in the next little while--say, by the year 2525, if Avalonia is still alive--I will personally present Mr Ferry with the results and report back with his response, however disgusted. Who knows, perhaps he'll need material for the 76th reunion. THE MYSTERY TITLES: Now Or Never Hear, Say Lack Of Emotion Impossible Love Yes, Dear (song for lucy) Cup Runneth Over Easy Come, Easy Go Don't Ever Love Me Out Of Fashion Someone Close By Trust Game PS. One title is an admitted phony. Part of the contest is to figure out which. Good Luck, Avalonians, and continue to worship me. As always, there are big clues in the headers (even AOL headers, though the time zone info is meaningless, as has been pointed out) and bigger clues in the contents of the messages - Mr Vapor's and others'. But, Avalonians, we should respect the purpose on-line identities, assumed or otherwise. All our messages to this and other Smoe lists are comprehensively catalogued by the Excite search engine for the wide world of web users to see. Search there and find all Avalon digests to which you've contributed since the list's move to Smoe. All this big brotherliness increases the appeal of using pseudonyms. Sometimes, personas from work and play - even from different forms of play - mix badly. Techies will have tens or hundreds of e-mail addresses but other newcomers to this medium may be caught unawares. Peel away the layers of someone's e-ID but please do it in private away from Google's eager clutches. The idea of someone *challenging* us to reveal his or her assumed identity is a completely different thing, of course. (I'm sure you'd agree, Chris.) But seeing off-list writing and even private correspondence mailed to Avalonia en masse can be an unpleasant shock. (Some newbies may never make a full recovery.) R.I.P., James Vapor.
