Headquarters reached number one and was primarily written and sung, etc.. by them- Mike wrote many songs other than the ones you described- no, they were not the Neil Diamond, Boyce and Hart songs, but they were pretty good. Peter and Davey were into other folk bands pre-monkees- and as I said Mike wote, "Different Drum," by the Stone Poney's. He also had some seminal hits when he went solo (Silver Moon, Joanne) and he wrote one for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Peter was known in the folk scene before the monkees- but when they signed up for the project they were actors first and musicians second- they knew that! They were a little more innovative then NKOTB- see the movie Head directed by Jack Nicholson for proof. - ----- Original Message ----- From: jspellma To: Sent: Tuesday, December 21, 1999 1:47 PM Subject: Re: [AVALON] Monkee magic > Not being cruel at all. There was a great response from the start - the string quartet came on to the usual cheers and whistles but someone also let rip with the sort of horn you hear at football matches and they dissolved into laughter, joined by the audience. Julia on harp wore tinsel in her hair and John Sutton sported a revolving bow tie. The whole band was in good spirits - doubtless 'end of tour' inspired so the final gig in Newcastle tomorrow should be terrific. Bryan was a little more chatty. Sitting himself down at the piano he said "Now I get a chance to sit in one of the expensive seats" and went on to introduce "The Only Face" as a track coming "from a pretty obscure album I did called Mamouna". The set was the same as Newcastle #1 (i.e. no "Easy Living" or "Can't Get Started....") but he also slotted in "Time On My Hands" - not sure what, if anything, made way for this. The audience stormed the stage two songs into the second half and Bryan really played to them. Everyone else was on their feet too. Bryan also seemed to be far more animated than on other nights, enjoying dancing in most of the closing numbers and acknowledging the Avalon backing vocals coming from one side of the audience standing at the foot of the stage. It seemed a wrench to leave the stage but he did so thanking the audience and wishing everyone a very happy Christmas. A brilliant night enjoyed by everyone it seems apart from two of the most miserable people you could wish to encounter who sat immediately in front of me and failed to respond to just about anything. For the majority of the second half they remained seated with no view of the stage whatsoever, only getting to their feet during Let's Stick Together. They really pissed me off and came close to spoiling the night (but didn't!) - such a shame that far more appreciative people were sitting behind them. If anyone on this list knows the people who had ticket numbers B26/27, please put their name forward for a personality transplant. Thank you! I didn't go in to things like labels and catalogue numbers as they do change throughout the world as do the b-sides, and a UK discography wouldn't be of much use (probably). It was merely intended to show that if you look, you will find these tracks without having to make it a cd tree item. Secondly, as far as I am aware the CD Tree concept is unique to the Avalon list (it's certainly the only list I know does this) and is a great way of sharing and distributing the unofficial recordings that sometimes come in to our posession directly to the fans. ASSH, the Boston Boot and Strictly Confidential do not contain any officially released material. Bootlegs can be expensive, difficult to get hold of and are illegal, but at least on the cd tree it does not become piracy, and no one makes a profit from it. The IFPI and the BPI are constantly cracking down on these activities, and becoming even more vigilant with sellers on the net, even a law has just been passed in Singapore that has now outlawed bootleg cd's that were once legal to sell in that country - the outlets for these coveted items are becoming fewer. We would not want to bring to their attention our CD Tree activities, but doing a compilation of official material has the potential to piss off the artist, management, it would go to lawyers and so on, if it were ever found out. And with a few people on this list having personal connections with Bryan Ferry I just feel that it wouldn't be the best thing to do. As I mentioned, trading this thing privately (ie off the list) is up to the individuals concerned, and if you find someone willing to do that, then fine. My point of repeating the CD Tree guidelines was just to underline its purpose. In the end, these are only my opinions and if it does eventually become a cd tree there's nothing that I or anyone else on the list can do about it, but maybe it is worthwhile holding on for the box set that Bryan has mentioned in interviews recently, because as with the fourth disc in the Roxy Music set, these songs would wrap things up nicely. On the list below I have added more detail for the original sources, mostly UK. I hope this clears things up for those interested. As The World Turns (This Is Tomorrow) She's Leaving Home (Tokyo Joe, All This And World War 2) Four Letter Love (Sign Of The Times) Broken Wings (Winswept EP) these four available on the Japanese Mamouna ep and on various bsides in the 70s and 80s Valentine (Instrumental) (Slave To Love) Nocturne (Don't Stop The Dance) Crazy Love (Winswept EP) Feel The Need (Winswept EP) Are You Lonesome Tonight? (Girl Of My Best Friend, Homeymoon In Vegas) Bonus tracks on the TAXI cd singles, also (with the exception of Lonesome) were 1980s bsides. He'll Have To Go (single in its own right, The Ultimate Collection) Help Me (US single, and on a soundtrack) On 'The Ultimate Collection' released in 1988 and still available.
