Hi Betsy You probably saw Jason's post saying that he's polished this rough diamond into someting rare and beautiful. I'm as keen as you are to see this final version and I understand the first batch of VHS copies are on their way to me for local distribution. His company has the technology to convert to US and other non-VHS formats so I'll have to speak to him about when we can feasibly produce them. We are all keen to get the collection out to every Avalonion who wants it but I'm sure you'll appreciate that this project has more logistical complications than, say, merely burning a set of CD-Rs. Kicki has designed a lovely jacket and that has to be coordinated too. It does seem unfair that UK Avalonions are likely to get a sneak at this thing ahead of the rest, and, as you know our intention was to have a global release date - God that sounds pretentious !- but it just hasn't happened that way. The CD Strictly Confidential is not my responsibility. Is it not Han who knows what's going on there ? I read something about "area captains" for these things which, for some reason, makes me smile. I'll get another post out before Christmas explaining where and when. Thanks for the enthusiasm. Bryan is notoriously hands-on with tour programmes but I think Virgin PR were responsible for this page. By and large the programme notes and photos were pretty good, featuring Puxley's low-key yet still charming swansong, and well worth a fiver. I agree with the stateside Avalonion who was less than impressed with the merchandise on offer at the gigs. A perfunctory effort. Where's the wit ? I don't remember it being well received by Avalonians, but on the whole it seems to me a pretty good piece of work. To start with, it's very well written. ( I take it that the odd missing conjunction and a couple of deeply peculiar sentences are the result of typoes. Those of us who read half-serious books know that the craft of the proof reader is as dead as Jacob Marley. ) Rock writing seems to me almost always an embarrassment - either whitewashes for teenagers or pseudo-academic nonsense. Even the honourable exception, the gifted poet Jeremy Reed, is by no means at his best in his Rock books. ( N.B, -Reed wrote a collection of poems about Pop stars which is not nearly as bad as the idea sounds, and Roxy gets a nice poem. I am in America, and my copy of the book in England, so I can't type it out.) Stump writes clearly and smoothly, and it's nice that Ferry merits literate treatment. It is almost entirely about the music itself, without the judgemental biographical diversions which padded, and to my mind marred, the Rogan book. It may say something about me as a reader and a Roxy admirer that I think Stump tends to be on firmer ground with the records he likes than those he dislikes. Most of us no doubt find it surprising that he thinks TAXI one of the great pop albums of the nineties, but he argues the case well. And his appreciation of THESE FOOLISH THINGS is acute. One has to shrug off his attack on AVALON as a vagary, but again it's indubitably well put. Of course, any book of this sort is bound to provoke and irritate, but it makes you think about the work afresh, even if it won't change minds. List members who passed it up would do well to give it a chance. Apparently no-one from Roxy has given it the nod of approval. I can see why, but it isn't by any means hostile. Stump obviously loves Roxy, and and we may as well learn if not to love then at least to value his book as the best we could realistically hope for. I spotted a brass monkey in Newcastle looking for a welder. Bryan took great inspiration from my kilt wearing endeavours in RFH by coming out for the encore in Glasgow wearing tartan trousers. The Glasgow crowd in typical fashion were the noisiest and wildest of the 6 shows I went to. They sung through every word of As Time Goes By like a football crowd. Bryan didn't have to bother singing. Newcastle was great too. The post gig pizza munchathon was a pleasure sitting with about 10 Avalonians and also some chat with Jim Lawn too. Jocelyne found us a Taxi just in time as we were seconds of being frozen to the pavements of Newcastle. The post gig banter in our B&B between myself, Richard Swift, Tom Wallace & Gareth McGinlay would still be going on if we didn't have lives to go to. some great stories emerged in the B&B lounge. Our landlord even seen Bryan when he was in The Gas Board Bryan came out the stage door and straight into the tour bus as he was protecting his throat from the sub zero temperatures. He then went into the bus and sat on a wee stool at the top of the stairs and the crowd formed a queue and one by one went into the bus to have autographs etc. With the time of year and the frosty weather it reminded me of Santas Grotto. I was glad to meet Bryan again and especially happy for Gareth who had come all the way from Ireland for the 2 shows to get a chance to meet Bryan himself. Oh well that's it until 2004 when Bryan will probably tour these shores again. Hall of fame thoughts, though not definitive in anyway: "Avalonian of the Year": Kiki G (for that incredible web site). "Best Research": Colleen (John Hardy and lyrics) "Best Prose": Martin S (easily: postmodern, pre-campari) (special mention though to Monquee Boy). "Best Story": Richard S (Oslo trip/waking dream). thankyou all for filling in the lacuna. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 20:58:32 -0000 From: "Robert Whiteford" Subject: Re: [AVALON] MOnkee SOng for Betsi Monkey Boy, Excellent - better than Taxi in fact.
