That makes it four - two Roxy and two Ferry's. Here's my thoughts. Overall what a great show. The ATGB stuff was performed lovingly and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The band - all 13 of them - quite clearly settled into the feel of the older songs quickly and played them like well known lovers. Where or When remains a favourite. What a superb song, beautifully sang and played. The strings - lovely - and horns gave the slower Roxy songs an elegance that complimented the originals. Chance Meeting shrugged off its own discordant nature to become a thing of true beauty. Sunset was gorgeous as well while Avalon was performed better live than I've heard before. It regained that swinging feel that was always difficult to recapture live. The drummer got it perfectly. Bitter Sweet, one of my faves, was interesting and a rude interuption on the smoothness of the evening. It also showed how difficult Andy Mackay's oboe parts are. It was still a joy though. What can you say about Jealous Guy - gorgeous, stunning, beautiful............ The band sailed throough two of the faster songs - Let's Stick Together and Do the Strand and gave Love is the Drug a lift. The arrangements worked well and the string quartet more than made up for no Jerry Hall. The two surprise songs for me were Out of The Blue and Street Life. Both made me wish it had been Roxy up there. The musicians gave both songs their best shot but there was something missing. That said Out of The Blue contained the musical highlight of the night. A stunning oh so stunning violin solo supported by three wirling string dervishes. The good thing was that everyone seemed to be enjoying it rather than going through the motions like the Mamouna tour. I have to take my hat off to BF. Getting musicians schooled in a completely differrent style of music to take on some of those Roxy classics and win took some bravery. How does it rate for me out of the four. At the moment equal second with the Flesh and Blood tour. Its Manifesto tour, As Time Goes By/Flesh and Blood and then Mamouna. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 21:19:09 +0800 From: Kicki Gustafsson Subject: [AVALON] !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Except thanks to Martin and Robert for hijacking me into the RFH (I didn't have a ticket and hadn't expected to see the show) and to JO'B for not insisting I examine the contents of his sporran. It was nice to meet so many beforehand in the somewhat overcrowded King's Head. They have a larger room in the back but appeared determined not to open it at such an early hour. That's one of the nice things about England, not too much of this over eager to please nonsense! Very nice too for me to meet Han and everybody. I appear to have missed Messieurs Manzanera and Mackay (and Ferry face to face of course) at the RFH (according to someone I spoke to at Croydon) but I did clock the Bromley contingent (well, Siouxie and Budgie anyway) on the way to their seats in the balcony. You read it here first... Jocelyn is right about the sound being poorer at Croydon, but it didn't spoil the show for me. I was about 8 rows back, whereas at GG and RFH I was in the balcony. Ferry's good to watch close up. He's always, it seems to me, treading a tight-rope between grace and clumsiness, with grace winning out more often than not, sometimes on points only. He may have been tired but I'm sure he enjoyed it more as the show went on. I'd echo what others have said, the rhythm section on the faster Roxy material did not really have the requisite power that the songs demand. But on the slower stuff and (of course) the 30's songs, they were wonderful, more than adequate. Sunset was gorgeous and I can't stop thinking what kind of arrangement of Mother of Pearl this band might be capable of. And More Than This... I was quite surprised at how bad it sounds. However, Mr. Gahan is a wonderful singer in his own right and I would NOT judge his vocals just on this cover. If memory serves me correctly, he did not have any part in the construction of the song. He merely did the vocals as a favor for John Taylor who had completed the backing track. Noam, I understand your hatred for the cover, but David Gahan was nothing until AFTER DM's early 80s release. You should check out his vocals on Songs of Faith and Devotion or the latest cd Ultra. He is not as emotive as Martin Gore, but he certainly has been one of the most consistant and durable front man in the last 20 years.
