Dear Confused There's a few possible answers. a) The person at the studio who passed it on may live in fear that he/she'll be unmasked. b) This person passed it to our listmember on the assumption that it would never be heard by another person. c) The Avalonion who holds the tapes may have spoken to other Avalonions about the history of the demos, and fears that they might be less than discreet on the list. Especially as having heard these treasures it would be quite natural to enter a discussion about their lineage. Then again perhaps he/she has no mystery in their lives since the Pastiche fandango. In addition, it has not been mixed or edited in any way. While I am copying for fellow Avalonians without any modifications, I have edited my personal copy to my liking. Some suggestions: Reduce the bass (63 Hz range) about 3 dBs Increase the treble (16 kHz range) 1-3 dBs Play it loud!! (I increased the recording level on my copy by 3 dBs - it makes a big difference in sound without any noticeable increase in hiss.) An amplifier will also help during playback. We had front row seats and Liverpool gave Bryan a tremendous reception - as they always did in the past, though it's been 20 years since he last played here. Talking to one of the band later he felt it was the most successful night of the whole tour so far. The songs were as at Golders Green plus "Easy Living" and "Love Me or Leave Me". I doubt there'll be too much in the national press until Bryan hits London on Tuesday but here's the Liverpool Echo's 5 star assessment of the night. Tuxedo Junction - Bryan Ferry, Royal Court. Always enigmatic and rarely a trend conformer, there's only one constant throughout Bryan Ferry's career - his own relentless stylishness. Almost into his third decade in music, survivor Ferry still somehow stubbornly eludes predictability. In the early years, when he fronted Roxy Music with a dash of eyeliner and leopardskin, he was flamboyany - yet never as glam as Bowie. Then in the eighties he assuredly side stepped the naffer elements of New Romanticism to go it alone with a floppy fringe and sharp white suit. Now, as if to test the flexible allegiance of fans, he's temporarily sidelined rock in favour of classic lounge crooning. It's not the first time he's dabbled. His distinctive crushed vevet vocals have already been heard on These Foolish Things and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, but this time there's an album and live tour backing his latest foray into torch song territory. The fact that Ferry can still command £25 a ticket is a compliment in itself. But these fans, content to indulge his every whim, were more than rewarded for their devotion. Sartorial as ever in tuxedo, open dress shirt and black leather trousers, Ferry took centre stage with a heavyweight orchestral backing - including a glamorous all blonde string quartet doubling as backing singers - and set about a seamless combination of the old and even older. The old came from his Roxy and solo back catalogue and was greeted with considerable rapture. Avalon, Let's Stick Together, Love Is The Drug and a sublime version of Jealous Guy had the audience off its seats. With them already in the palm of his hand, it was a simple task to steer them towards the even older, the stuff of elegant pre-war jazz clubs and Noel Coward's coolest cocktail parties. As Time Goes By, You Do Something To Me and Dietrich's classic Falling In Love Again lent themselves perfectly to his smooth voice, but then so did his own Do The Strand, an uproarious encore. So in which era does Ferry's heart truly lie? Maybe the tux and leather prove he's still deciding. Still if today was Friday tomorrow would be Saturday. This relative chart success is well deserved - ATGB is Ferrys best work in 14 years - and very heartening given that this sort of gamble could have been an unmitagated disaster. Sorry to hear of the thefts at Radio 2 but I thought what I heard was brilliant. Listening to The Only Face convinces me his voice is in fine shape. Better than the layered version on Mamouna. Just discovered the list, and what a great source of info it is.Thanks to a prompt from a fellow fan out there ,I was able to catch the Philly and New York shows recently. This was the first I had seen of him since Hammersmith Odeon some years ago,and Iwas not dissapointed! The crowd was a complete contrast in NY to Philly ,as much as the setting was.New Yorkers seemed anxious and on edge,or maybe that was just me ! As the leather clad female musicians appeared,I heard a loud request from the balcony for "Whipping Post",.........only in New York !!! This has been a perfect ending for the year for me,and I am getting homesick for England while I read about the RFH and Golders Grn gigs.I was hoping Bryan would have taken a longer break in between,to give me a chance to get some cash together for a flight over,no such luck.So my final query is,does anyone out there have a tape of the Muchmoremusic show aired in Canada this past week,"Speakeasy" with BF.?I would welcome a copy if any of you could help please? - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 00:43:41 -0000 From: "Richard Swift" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: Chart I asked Jim Lawn the same question this week. The answer is apparently very difficult to ascertain because of the various record label changes. Jim did however say that "Avalon" was recently recognised as having sold one million copies in the US - qite an achievement for a band that never broke the American market! If Jim Lawn can't help, how about asking at www.manzanera.com ? Does Billboard publish that sort of info? Also, since the record companies award gold records and their variants for records sales, are there public records of those? You do like Bryans music ? Yes, everything is big in Texas. Not everyone here wears boots either. Some very beautifuf women are in this state, just ck. with The Man B.F. We also get the best in concerts because their is so many places to have them. When Ferry was here he played in a theater with the best acoustics great lighting, pretty people in the audience who knew what art was. I was sitting on the 7th row from stage. I'f my arm had been longer I could've touched him. What a treat, so intimate a setting & he crooned for two solid hrs. one dress change, Atterwards, some couple had won a dinner with him from a radio show of course they were front row with all the reporters. We saw where Bryan & this couple were being escorted back stage. So we proceeded to head in the sane direction. No one stopped us so we went out to where the buses were parked & waited. Of course he was meeting with the press & we sad to say left without meeting him. That folks . was A close Encounter ,my kind........M. K.......Ya'll write Ya'll here.......
