My copies of the first 5 LPs are all vinyl. The vinyl version of the "Roxy Music" album had a pretty duff sound quality - always had to up the volume to compensate. I felt the first CD version was a vast improvement but the remastered version is much improved on that. By the way does anyone remember the very first copies of this album to be released had a gloss finish to the album sleeve - a friend had a copy. I bought mine a couple of months after the release and it had a matt finish (as all since have had) - trivia or what! I agree with Richard about "The Thrill of it all" - it was the "wall of sound" that BF was going for at the time. I always thought that it was a tremendous track but the remastered version is superb - wall of sound + being able to hear each contribution. Must stop these postings! They bill it like a boxing match with much hyperbole. They obviously choose groups that share a time or a style. Past "face-offs" include for instance, Spandau v Human League, REM v Talking Heads, Stones v Beatles, Jam v Clash, Otis v Marvin, Oasis v Blur, Nirvana v Radiohead, Stone Roses v that other druggy Manchester band whose name escapes me, and so forth. One week they even had, as a laugh, Elvis P v Elvis C. Today they announced that next Friday they were going to "Face-off" Roxy against another band but, mais naturalement, the presenters couldn't come up with a suitable rival. Listeners rang in with (often crazy) suggestions : T-Rex, Duran, Japan, Sweet (!) and thousands of others. I tried to call in with the only suggestion worth considering, our old list chestnut RM v BF. Couldn't get through. After an hour of hearing absurd ideas the presenters finally declared that Roxy were a one-off and could not be compared with any other group in the history of music. No surprises there then. pip pip Martinot - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 12:49:24 +0100 From: "van Lammeren, Anton" Subject: RE: [AVALON] Updated! So to issue it in matte undercuts a part of the design intention, as of course does the exclusion of the gatefold in some (all?) of the American issues. I never know whether to be depressed that these got higher than the originals or pleased that Ferry has songs in the charts. I mean Ian McShanes Avalon got higher than Ferrys (sorry Roxy's) and that IS criminal. Considering his massive influence on many bands I always used to consider it surprising that really only David Sylvian ( a high class artist in my view) did a passable Ferry impression on "I second that Emotion". And maybe Icehouse on "Hey Little Girl". But for all the Durans,Spandaus, ABC's , Phil Oakeys and Brett Andersons it is a testament to Ferry's brilliance that no one could really rip him off successfully - he just has something other people don't . I think it's real class without even trying. However I notice that some peoples erstwhile champion George Michael has "Where or When" on his new album. Wonder what that's like. On a scale of 0 to 10 about minus 1 I should think. But seriously has anyone else attempted "Let's Stick / WorkTogether" or "Dance Away" ? Most of these covers just remind me how unique Ferry is. First, I still cannot receive any mail. I have to find a new provider but I haven't got the time yet so don't sent me request at this moment. I will let you know when the mailproblem is solved. (I read the post on the site) Second, when someone is making a copy use the 'Disc at Once mode' to illiminate the two second gap between the numbers. For the numbers that are not live, I have add the silence in the song itself. I will handle the world, except the UK, Canada and USA. For the UK... I guess Chris Turner, Peter Dewey and John O'Brien are willing to make some copy's. For the people at the RFH-gig I will take copy's with me. David it is clear you have to come to meet me to get a copy signed by Chris! The US and Canada, I don't now if there are any volunteers. I will sent a copy to Heather James and to David. Maybe you two want to sent copy's to the people who want to do this part of the tree? I made an inlay which I will sent to anyone who's interested, but again when my mailproblem is over. Talking about Heather.. where is Heather Buch??? I miss her. The title is STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. Why ..... read and you will know. First I have to thank Chris Turner who brought in most of the stuff and someone anonymous who sent me three very special songs. This boy or girl send me three studio outtakes of Roxy on tape. The demo's are sketches of the songs, Ferry isn't really singing, but he is doing a kind of hmmmm to find the way the lyrics must fit in the songstructure. Some snippets of lyrics. On one he is singing 'Round in circles which is a premature 'Is your love strong enough'. Before you all start the discussion who has sent this...READ THE NOTE HE/SHE SEND ALONG WITH THE TAPE: "As you can see there are 3 rare and previously unheard tracks been donated to the project. The Avalonian who gave these tracks would like to remain anonymous and would like you to enjoy the tracks and would like you to hear how Bryan worked at this period. Discussion of the tracks is inevitable and would be rather interesting, but the listmember would appreciate that there are no discussions or guessing games about where they came from, this is the maincondition for these tracks being given to the ASSH2 project and your appreciation for the tracks that are making this the CD of all CDs can be shown by respecting this wish by not discussing their origin." As you can see it is all STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL One clue...The tape was wrapped in a white sock to prevent it against any damage. I filtered out the noise, rebalanced the channels and brought the soundlevel to the same point. I cut and paste each performance in a way it sounds as one performance even when it was broadcast in snippets like the Net Aid performance. The sound quality of most of the songs is excellent. I had some problems with the LA concert. There where little dropouts in the sound and I worked hours to get the final result. Chris send me a tape...a cdr and then again the original tape. I used the best parts and then start repairing it. The other Highlight: the two songs of the Twiggyshow. They had a very bad soundquality "more noise than voice". The result on the cd is almost hundred percent better than the tape but still it is only interesting for fans. It has that unique early seventies anorexiasound. Hope you enjoy it all.
