So put me on there cos I'm coming (Hold on, there's a song in that). SimonG >>> "Johnny Reece" 12/07 1:48 am >>> ...and a fine time was had by all. By the looks of it - pretty much what our USA Avalonians have recently witnessed - though I suspect this was 'scaled down' slightly for the Radio recording. Will be interesting to see what's left in/out of the Radio Show of it next Saturday. On stage for 1hr 40 mins though - pretty much a full set I think. High points for me ? Well, 'The Only Face', and 'Casanova'. Brill to hear both 'Chance Meeting' and 'Bitter Sweet' too, even though the arrangement on the latter was fairly bizarre. So glad a few Roxy choice cuts made it in though. 'Can't Get Started With You' is a wonderful song - hope it makes it on to the Show on Sat. I would imagine the first 3 cuts (Harp/Quartet/Band Instrumentals) may not be featured on the Radio Show, excellent in their own right though they were. The ending ? (last 20 mins) - you can guess. Not so much 'names to faces' but 'drinks to faces and down throats' afterwards, nice to meet all you fellow Avalonians. Particularly looking forward to more serious drinking mixed with much BF/RM discussion next Tuesday, prior to/after RFH. And just in case you wondered why a Scot or two whizzed off home quickly - we were headed for Wembley to nick the turf again. Mary Rose - welcome to the list. No, we weren't 'not talking to you' or anything - it's just that you joined in the midst of pure chaos for many of us - travel arrangements etc to see Bry tonight - and many of us with spare Tickets trying to see if others needed any at the last minute. I do hope everyone that could have made it to the Gig got a ticket in the end - I presume so as the 'Avalonia' contingent was there in force. Anyway, welcome Mary - and your question - what do we discuss ? Well - pretty much a tiny bit of everything - and lots of what is really important to us. Hopefully the upcoming UK leg of the Tour will swell our numbers even more. Will see you lot again next Tuesday, though probably with bleary eyes by the end of the evening. Party time wasting is too much fun. Good though. I generally use the list as a source of information which has been very useful particularly in the last year. Most of you seem to know the answers that I know to any questions posed and get in first. Hence the lurking! Nobody has mentioned that Phil Manzanera was on BBC Radio 4 last Saturday morning c.10:20 a.m. He was a guest on Ned Sherrin's "Loose-Ends" programme (which for you overseas Avalonians is a studio chat show with a relaxed and humorous theme). I turned the radio on to hear somebody describing his early childhood in Cuba during Castro's coup when his family lived opposite the Presidential Palace - he remembered gun fights in his garden and his Colombian mother screaming and holding his head down while the bullets were flying. As he started to tell of the countries he lived in and the musical influences it became apparent that it was Phil. They played a track off Vozero (don't know which one as I'm waiting for my copy from Expression Records) which had some S. African musicians on it. Ned Sherrin mentioned that Phil had seen BF for the first time in 5 years when working on ATGB album. Phil laughed and said "Or was it 20 years!". He was then asked was the RM split acrimonious to which Phil replied that they had all been too close for too long and had basically got fed up with each other. He was then asked if that was the case what about the chance of a RM reunion - to which Phil replied "I'm up for it" then mentioned the .. body of work not being played... (BF has mentioned the same in recent BBC Radio 2 interview). That was about it - he was on for about 10 minutes. Some biog. details: I've been into Roxy/BF since I heard the first album in '72 (I'm 44 before you ask - I gather not the eldest!) I've seen them/him 8 times, got most/all mainstream releases + few boots. (Just helped educate his sons by buying all the remasters!). I was dubious when I heard about ATGB but having got it I think it is tremendous (is this an age thing?). Got tickets for Manchester Apollo 21st Dec. That's it for now. I do hope he follows what's in his "heart" (like what he did with ATGB) and not feel he has to rehash what went on 15+ years ago. Anxious to hear whatever he's planning. As for the look back to the 30's on ATGB, I've always wondered why Bryan hasn't really explored some of the old doo-wop stuff which came about here in the 50's. I know he liked the black groups' outfits. While there is some real soupy stuff there are alot of songs to be mined that I think he could do in his inimitable style. Nice song for him to do would be "You Belong to Me" by the Duprees..."See the pyramids along the Nile...see the marketplace in old Algiers... Maybe he thinks it's too syrupy? I don't know. That was rock star idol Bryan Ferry as he sat up in hospital yesterday. For the singer feared he was near death when he collapsed in a French hotel room. "It all happened so suddenly", he said. "The pain was so terrific that I thought I might be dying". Ferry, now on the mend at a London clinic, revealed: "My first thoughts were that I might be suffering a heart attack or a burst appendix. It just came with no warning as I was alone in my room [Wot? No groupies??]. I managed to crawl to a phone and ring one in our group who was in the hotel lobby". Ferry's group, Roxy Music, were nearing the end of av seven-week European tour when the 33-year-old lead singer collapsed. He spent two days under heavy sedation in a French hospital. Last night, Ferry was flown by private ambulance jet to London, where he is being treated for a kidney complaint. The group are due to open a British tour at Brighton on Wednesday. But Ferry said: "I doubt if I'll be ready for that". I'll have to scan the picture that goes with it later, because it's really something. It was great to meet a few more faces especially the Avalonians I have corresponded with direct in the past. The show..... I lot of my sentiments have been covered by various others who have beat me too it so I wont repeat them. In addition to what has already been said, I was moved by The Only Face. The arrangement was 'shit hot' The trumpet player drifting into the distance like Ferry used to do at the end of Song For Europe. Bryan did his remake remodel thing by reinventing the air guitar with the air cello (it was either that or his hand movements that I thought was the bow was actually Bryan pointing to the string session and saying "check her out boys") The old hits stuff that he did Jealous Guy Avalon Let's Stick Together Do The Strand Love Is The drug etc. are songs that I have heard too many times live, though I understand why he plays them, but most of them I really enjoyed the new arrangements to. Do The Strand is a standout in this category. The guitar break middle section being covered by the string section, the girls obviously right into it. It was hard to tell if they were playing the inurements or the instruments were playing them. A quasi reggae feel subtly stuck in there to really drive it along a new grove. The 30's stuff was so right for him and the voice was as good as any 'singer' singing the 'singers singer' tunes. My least favourite ATGB song was Just One Of Those Things, that's totally changed now. It was one of the best ATGB songs he did live. The old Roxy hits, well what can I say...... This 'singers' set showed that he can write a mean tune too. Sunset, Chance Meeting pieces of aural beauty that had so much space put into them by 15ish musicians. The Only Face proved that he can write as good a tune in the '90s as he did in the '70s Lets hope BBC edit the show the way we would like it. Any suggestions for the bootleg. As Martin said I found the line "These Vintage Years" from Bitter Sweet very powerful last night. If Carrickfergus doesn't land on the cutting room floor then it could be called "On Marble Stone As Black As Ink". i have an excellent photo of Bryan sitting on a huge black stone which could be used for the sleeve. I have 5 more shows to go to so I have 5 more pairs of incontinence pants to by as I simply wet myself last night Now you know what the smell was Martin - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 13:39:01 PST From: "mark shanahan" Subject: [AVALON] detroit review well, hope all had a wonderful time at the GG gig in london town ...! since tomorrow is the *month anniversary* of the detroit gig and not that many people have posted 'reviews' (per se ...), if there's still interest in another review (especially for those UKers not yet having seen bryan this tour), i'd be happy to post tonight/tomorrow. but with people like jocelyn & others, who've seen him so many times, maybe it's a bit redundant now ... and w/the above-mentioned gig ... i suppose i'll do it anyway ... just to see if i can do it justice. peaces/ms ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1999 22:13:56 +0000 From: rafedder@genie.co.uk Subject: [AVALON] GG John O'B's review said it all for me. However, I would like to add to his choice phrases "shit hot", "incontinence pants" etc. BF demonstrated with dignity and originality that he can re-invent himself at the tender age of 62 (or is it 54?) and put together a truly iconfeckinclastic gig. I never thought I'd see Chance Meeting, Sunset, Bitter Sweet and The Only Face performed live - let alone so well. This is special. Even the overplayed Jealous Guy was great on the night (the best I've heard it). I'm just glad I've got tickets for two more gigs. For those who weren't there, I should say something about the audience: very good looking , sophisticated jet setters all of them. Especially the Avalonians. Kicki's site photos do not do justice. Hell, it was like a screen test for The Matrix combined with Casablanca. And what a wide age range - from at least 45 to 50. God it was hip, i.e. artificial hip. I would have felt my age if it weren't for the fact that the old swingers on the stage blew away all the crap I've been hearing from the current crop of whippersnappers in the music biz. that trumpet player was soooh good. Hello Avaloniacs, To get my mind off my insane jealousy over all of you Brits who saw the BBC show last night, and will see others soon, I thought I'd throw out a question. I've been a RM/BF fan for over a quarter of a century! I'm a Yank living in San Francisco but lived in London from the mid-60's to the mid-70's. Here's the question: at some point in 1972 or 1973 I saw Roxy w/Bryan on a rock music TV show and was hooked immediately. What I remember is this incredibly sexy guy in a white or cream safari (?) suit. Almost certainly the song was 'Virginia Plain.' Martin Stockman, or anyone, was this the 'Top of the Pops' show you saw? If so, or even if not, when was it? Anyway, I must have gone out and tried to buy that song, and of course failed. Turntable didn't have a 45 speed. So the first album I got was 'Stranded' and it remains a fave to this day. The remaster is backordered from CD Now. I did see the ATGB show here in Oakland, and it was sensational! First I've ever seen Bry live. Thanks to you all, am loving the two cuts from the Boston Boot thanks to Kicki, and awaiting my own copy of the show.
