I would have thought it would be a very high priority given the > theme of opening and closing tracks (usually a longish intro. on the first > track, slow wind down last track). Hi Alan Anthony Price, in that BBC radio programme "The Roxy Music Story", makes numerous references to the control Bryan exerts over the total product. I think that "track listing" would definitely fall within this. He also refers to the physicality of operating vinyl, the picking up and placing the needle in the groove, the spacial awareness of where the track actually is on the disc. Over half of the RM/BF catalogue was created with two sides of a record (or a cassette) in mind rather than the straight run-through of a CD, and his artist's attention to detail coupled with his stylist's attention to product would surely have led him to focus on the "map" of the album. In this sense not only opening and last tracks are important. The openers on Side 2, for instance, are interesting. "Serenade", say, is upbeat single material but lacked the attack of "Street Life" so made a good Side 2 opener. Ditto "The Main Thing" v "More Than This." (Okay, I know She Sells knocks this theory on the head but I think that was just to keep frizzy Eddie quiet.) I used to have a theory that track 2 was where Ferry hid his secret favourite. Beauty Queen, Can't Let Go, End Of The Line, Ladytron, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Will you still love me. The exceptions that (dis)prove this rule stack up though ! (All Night Operator, Trash, NYC !!!) I'm sure others have similar pet theories. After 20 years of reading about this tune I had to buy a copy and await another disaster. Moreover, given their over-inflated prices which are in pounds sterling: also if you have time cop some of the Japanese import prices. I would rate the quality as very good, reserving the excellent label for soundboard recordings. As a boot and understanding the limitations of that genre, Ferry fans (like me) who couldn't attend the current tour or those who did and would like a souvenir will enjoy this boot. Details: The recording is a double cd with picture discs and color photos front back and inside with a four panel front cover. Track listing is: Disc One Usher's Warning The Girls Perform Nightfall The Way You Look Tonight Love Me Or Leave Me Smoke Gets In Your Eyes Chance Meeting Easy Living Lover Come Back To Me Carrickfergus I Can't Get Started Where or When Casanova Bittersweet I'm For It Too (what's this one???) The Only Face Disc Two Sunset September Song You Do Something To Me Falling In Love Again Just One Of Those Things Avalon Jealous Guy Let's Stay Together Do The Strand As Time Goes By Title is Bryan Ferry Boston 11/7/99. Case says "A Mellow Recording" and also says Made in Italy. Catalog number is ML 6140. How they got the boot recorded and manufactured in such short order, especially if it really was manufactured in Italy, is a wonder to me. I hope to get the discs out for duplication and subsequent distribution in the coming week. My only role in this cd tree will be to supply the material; I won't be making copies since I don't have a burner. Maybe this is something the list should do more of. The Name of the Game, Day for Night and Seven Deadly Sins are songs I would say that let Bete Noire down. Having taken 2 1/2 years to get it out it was a little disappointing to hear repetitive stuff dragged out to 5 minutes plus a song. However the other tracks are high quality and as far as the UK market is concerned the chart failure of "The Right Stuff" was inexplicable except for his absence for such a long time after Boys and Girls. Although I'm not very sure I sometimes think the mixing and production on Bete Noire did nothing for the songs. Reading the review of In Your Mind served to remind me Martin Stockmans point that not many Ferry/Roxy records are without poor tracks is spot on. In Your Mind has 3,maybe 4 plain awful tracks out of 8. Can I nominate the hideous "Cry Cry Cry" as the worst I've heard . Probably "My Little Girl" not far behind. Manifesto was a strange collection of songs really..... Actually you could argue that the overall consitency of his work has increased in later albums, especially considering they are all solo efforts. Love these remasters , which I now have most of . Lovely , deep, warm, vibrant sound quality to them. Wish I could have a remaster of ATGB as it's sound quality is left satnding by the remasters. I was wondering how other list members feel now about As Time Goes By. Those capable of changing their minds anyway. I was very worried and a bit sceptical before it came out but I reckon it's brilliant. His records really grow on me over a long period of time, and this one still is. Better than most I think. Wonder where it would register on a poll of Roxy/Ferry favourite material. Might be interesting to mix and match Roxy and Ferry solo in the same list. Maybe Eno solo as well. Maybe all of them solo in fact. If we do such a poll someone it ought to be sent to Gareth - who I hope will reconsider his decision to leave the list. Why he would be an object of ridicule on the list is totally beyond me. I know someone replied (sorry can't remember who) that the discrepancy could be explained by purchases made in non - chart return shops but I don't think this is the answer. I'm fairly certain that 'sales' in this context are sales to shops not sales to the public - i.e. the numbers ordered. I'm sure I've read this somewhere before. Phil and the Team were wandering around his studio today and he picked up a 45 (remember them?) and said "'Giddy Up', Bryan's on this and me and most everyone else". We had never heard of it but there it was, as round and black and small as life. Clearly something for the Roxy archive at some stage." Here's what the label states on the 45 that I picked up in NYC many years ago. Side A label says GIDDY UP (INC. "SLEIGH RIDES") (2.50) (L. Anderson arr. Dumbells) Side B label = A Christmas Dream (3.20) (Dumbells) I also found the following scratched into the vinyl around the label on side A: TINSLE TRASH The 45 is from EG/Polydor, 1980. I picked it up because a sign in the store listed it as Roxy Music. I suppose this is the closest to a Roxy Christmas tune as possible, although "In Your Mind" does have the "frozen chimes of winter," and Bryan does sing about Christmas Trees in "When She Walks In The Room."
