Koetting" Subject: [AVALON] A Spontaneous Review of "In Your Mind" If you all can stand me doing this again... Again, I claim no sort of talant of critical reviewing; all I offer is my biased opinions..! "In Your Mind" is certainly not one of Avalonia's favorite albums to be sure, but I always dug that silly (somewhat cheesy) late 70's sound. I don't listen to this particular album often but when I do there are a few stellar tracks that bear repeating and a few that I concede are less than listenable... On the whole, I find the album a peculier transition from old-style Roxy Music to a perhaps more soulful solo Bryan Ferry. One could speculate on his state of mind with the whole Jerry Hall thing and the demise of Roxy, but I'm not capable of psycho analyzing as perhaps others on the list... Here we go... 1. This Is Tomorrow- Wow- what a really cool track! Such a departure from anything previous he had done with Roxy- that very cool intro 'under the stars' and that brilliant, clean voice.. and then the step into that sort of 70's silly guitar thing that reminds me of the worst of themes- don't ask me why but I think of big long-haul trucks when I hear that rhythm guitar and that sax paired up... But the vocals seem unusually clear and sort of above the fray of the music. 2. All Night Operator- This one is a dog- sounds like something adapted from a song from the 50's without much success. It's so bad that I would think it would fit better on "These Foolish Things." (my least favorite Ferry album) 3. One Kiss- OK- two dogs in a row. Even worse than "All Night Operator." What was he on? 4. Love Me Madly Again- YES! The very, very best song on the album... I can listen to this on repeat for an hour... The lyrics are awful, but man do I get into the loud groove here- it's like he's got a little high-pitched tension going on.. ain't natural but boy he's feelin' somethin'... And I'm a sucker for a long, draged out instrumental ending, even if Ann O'Dell has something to do with it... Pure **** candy man.... 5. Tokyo Joe- am I alone in thinking this is a little bit racist? Never got into this one- please don't remind me that the Japanese actually like this one... 6. Party Doll- Not as bad as track 2 or 3 but nothing special. Did EG say he had to have at least 8 tracks to do an album??? 7. Rock of Ages- Here's a charmer song- love that whole intro atmospheric thing... I can't put my finger on why I like the rest of the song but I just love it anyway. The back up singers are cool, the lyrics are lost on me if there's any significance to them, but the music is so... nice. The guitar thing is broken up with periods of more piano, synth, and sax, the girls again carry the song well... 8. In Your Mind- (Merry Christmas Kicki..) I love this song, too. Why? Because the lyrics are the silliest he's ever written? ("See the veiled prophet's withered gaze reflect the nouvelle vague-" if that doesn't make you laugh trying to envision that little phrase I don't know what will!) Is it because I like the sleigh bells? Is it because I like the sort of longish, lazy melody? Or is the easy chord progression? Hell, I don't really know, I just like it... This was the hardest Bryan Ferry album for me to get into but the gems on this album are inimitable. I wonder what he felt about this particular album when it was finished and what he thinks of it now. Not often has he performed any of these songs live and certainly seldom, if ever after '80. Would a version of "In Your Mind" have worked with his current touring 'orchestra?' I think it'd be interesting. Hmm... greggie/atlanta "Is it as passionate as it seemed? Phil and the players sound inspired. I still hear a little of Phil's Beatlesque feelings here and there. 2. Rage... Before Beauty- Pretty Things..the most under appreciated band around 3. Avenue B- Iggy Pop...Iggy goes pop don't you believe it...continues to grow on me. 4. ASSH- Bryan Ferry....what's not to love about this one except it should be 10 cds long......thanks to Avalon for this one 5-Showtime- Mick Ronson. A live recording of a band that shoud have been massive. This mid 70's recording shows what we missed. A great companion to his Just Like This.. Tragic loss 6. Although we knew > the first one, there had been some speculation about the other. "The Butcher Boy" is also known as "I'll Die For You." And "I Died For Love," among other titles. (Ferry actually sings another variation of it--"The Railroad Boy.") Were the lyrics for these songs ever posted? I can't remember. Ferry sings close approximations of these variations on the songs: The Butcher Boy She went upstairs to make her bed. And not one word to her mother said. Her mother she went upstairs too, saying: "daughter oh daughter, what's troubling you?" "Oh mother oh mother I cannot tell. It's that railroad boy that looks so well. He's courted me my life away. And now at home I long to stay. "There is a place in London town where my love goes and he sits there down. And he takes a strange girl on his knee, and he tells to her what he won't tell me." Her father he came home from work, saying: "where's my daughter, she seems so hurt." He went upstairs to give her hope, and he found her hanging by the rope. He took a knife and he cut her down. And on her bosom these words he found: "Go dig my grave both wide and deep. Put a marble stone at my head and feet. "And on my grave put a snow white dove to tell the world: 'she died of love.' " John Hardy John Hardy, he was a desp'rate little man, He carried two guns ev'ry day. He shot a man on the West Virginia line, An' you ought seen John Hardy getting away. John Hardy, he got to the Keystone Bridge, He thought that he would be free. And up stepped a man and took him by his arm, Says, "Johnny, walk along with me." He sent for his poppy and his mommy, too, To come and go his bail. But money won't go a murdering case; They locked John Hardy back in jail. John Hardy, he had a pretty little girl, That dress that she wore was blue As she came skipping through the old jail hall, Saying, "Poppy, I've been true to you." John Hardy, he had another little girl, That dress that she wore was red. She followed John Hardy to his hanging ground, Saying, "Poppy, I would rather be dead." I been to the East and I been to the West, I been this wide world around. I been to the river and I been baptized, And now I'm on my hanging ground. John Hardy walked out on his scaffold high, With his loving little wife by his side. And the last words she heard poor John-O say, "I'll meet you in that sweet bye-and-bye." "Bryan Ferry epitomizes cool. As much of a stylist as a singer, he has been sporadic but always memorable in his solo career. On his first album since 1994's Mamouna, Ferry revisists yesteryear, covering a delicious array of standards culled from the late '20's and '30's. Unlike the recent spate of trendy jitterbug brats, Ferry handles these standards with an artist's hand. He's less interested in being retro than he is in finding the passion within these songs. Choosing from the catalogs of Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, and Rogers and Hart, Ferry gives himself much to work with. "The Way You Look Tonight" becomes rousing Hot Band jive, while "I'm in the Mood for Love" smolders with Oriental strings and ambience. As he has done since the days of Roxy Music, Ferry maintains a somewhat detached but never disengaged attitude of cool, breathing a chilled, just-shy-of-camp amour into songs that are strong enough to take it." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #389 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
