I hear two rhythm guitars. From what info they gave you, I would say Phil plays the intro riff (ding dinga ding) that continues in and out through the entire tune. It sounds like a chorus/echo. Echo is a delay or repeat, chorus is a shorter delay with the pitch modulated, a very lush, swishy sound. (Think Andy Sommers of the Police) I also hear another guitar playing basic bar chords slightly distorted (what Fender amps are known for). The sound is more of a plain one, a reverb or delay yes, but no chorus, this I think to be Hubbard. Also sounds compressed. As for the solo, geez I don't know, it sure sounds like him and that equipment, but I don't know for sure. What do you think about the ending solo of "Slave to Love"? That is definitely Neil. I would learn and try as much as you can before you buy. A new ES-335 is around $2500 (US), a Telecaster is $600. '52 Tele's are going for about $12,000 in NY these days. A 60's ES-335 can't be too far behind. There are also cheaper imitations, some good, some not so good. As for compression, it doesn't usually color the sound, it holds high levels down like when you hit the strings hard, it doesn't come out on tape. It also boosts the low levels so everything sounds like it's struck with the same energy. Good luck finding the answer! I didn't hear Emmylou's record despite the Lanois production and some great reviews but saw some live televised performances and quite liked them. I know they did Wrecking Ball (which was fantastic on Young's Freedom LP) but didn't know that Young himself was involved. It seemed that Lanois brought out the good in people he worked with. I didn't know of his being an egomaniac and didn't like much of his second album - For the Love of Wynona (sp?) - but parts of his first showed such promise; a few Eno collaborations of his hit the spot, too. He seemed to be in search of sonic beauty, with a pretty good idea of where to find it. An ego to contend with can be a good thing in Ferry's co-producers. Perhaps Bryan needs someone good in the studio to really outpace, to compete with. Neil Young's recent stuff didn't do much for me, and I lost interest some time ago. I didn't know that David Briggs had died, and am really sorry to hear it. He was fantastic. Quite the contrary, in fact. But Mr. Stockman evidently felt the need to insert himself into something which did not involve him, he evidently did not feel the need to post all of my *personal* and *private* and *off-list* emails to a third person, although I am of course thankful he did not. He has brought out the best in certain artists. The Neville Brothers Yellow Moon is the only time that the potential of the "Nevilles" was achieved. I guess I don't consider Bryan to be "rootsy"and that is where Lanois does his best. I do not invite debate on the art of flame-throwing however. I have "red" this list for some time now, and find the art of flame-throwing so unnecessary (and uninteresting)...it is a great list which could, perhaps, benefit from the Aristotelian notion that attempts to understand the "other" interlocutor's perspective might achieve eudomonia. After all, BF wrote some great postmodern songs of existential longing. They seem, to me at least, to be inspired by Nietzche's "Zarathustra" (an inspiration for many hermeneutists). Perhaps we could inflect Zarathustra's "longing" and create a "fusion of horizons" where understanding and interpretation are achieved. In my view, postmodern philosophy or postmodern "campari", may miss this dimension of being (see for example Mr Vapor's last post or was that "Monqui Boy"). All I promise is to tell you what I hear in the album and what my reactions are.. First of all, thank you to Helene for asking me to do this. She's much too sweet! It has been awhile since I've given this album a close listen. It's not readily one of my favorites although there are a couple of really, really good songs on it. 1. Limbo- This opener reminds me of the first time time I saw Bryan Ferry live. It was here in Atlanta at the very romantic Chastain Park Amphitheater. I was living in Macon and hadn't bought tickets to the show before I arrived and I was worried sick that I wouldn't get to see Mr. Ferry. The show was amazing and of course the opening song was "Limbo." The song itself seems very South American with all of the 'extra' percussion and the strong bass line. Sort of a peculier "Avalon" gone south..waaay south... And because I saw this live I still have this warm, sultry summer night feeling whenever I hear this song 2. Kiss and Tell- This really should have Ferry's big breakthrough hit here in the states- what an instant hook of a chorus and the clever 'typewriting' samples.. And it should have been a hit in the discos (which I guess it did get played some) 3. New Town- don't like this one- don't care for the 'chant.' 4. Day for Night- The very best song on the album... There's a darkness in it akin to "Stonger Through the Years," with a sort of cooling off between each verse with the chorus. The darkness seems to creep up a bit and then by the ending it seems there is a sort of crossing back and forth of resolve and anger. I wish the song were extended a couple extra minutes... 5. Zamba- an icy song, indeed. This is one of those songs that makes me think Bryan could do an incredible instrumentals album. The lyrics are simple, yet are very efficient for the music and the mood. 6. The Right Stuff- I've tried to like this song, but it's pure dross. Too bouncy and silly. 7. Seven Deadly Sins- too manufactured for my tastes and seems overly polished. 8. The Name of the Game- I love the melancholy feel of this song- he sounds so lost. The emotion seems well carried by the strong melody and the backup singers, yet the lyrics really seem to paint that infamous 'hope against hopelessness..' This song is definitely my second favorite on the album. 9. Bete Noire- I have mixed feelings about this one- but mostly I get irritated by the obnoxious percussion and the theatrical violins- Overall, the music is technically as close to perfect as you could probably get- hell you've got Dave Gilmour, Johnny Marr, and Chester Kamen... And that might be the problem. I think the music overall is much too polished for the most part. Could I envision an early Roxy Music doing any of these songs? Probably "Day for Night," and "The Name of the Game," and that's it. I wonder if people now look for "Bete Noire" in the record stores these days... greggie/atlanta - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #387 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
