Anybody else? Hi Jim He's made reference to the different vibe of the luscious I'm In The Mood in a couple of recent interviews, probably posted on Kinki's site, with particular reference to the kind of sonic guitar employed by Trower throughout Taxi and of course played here by that guitarist from the Explorers. * I think we are entitled to wonder, however, if this was the track that sparked the entire project. Say he'd laid this down with the old 64 track for a new album of ready-mades and new material. Note the texture. The sound effects. The poem overlay. Say he gets Colin Goode along to play the old Joanna and they get talking .... On another note thanks to John and Chris for confirming this Stallone story. I heard something like this at the time but hadn't heard anyone mention it on the list these past 15 months that I've been around. I began to believe, in all truth, that I'd dreamt this one up and consequently was reluctant to raise the spectre of the Maestro v Rocky on Planet Avalon. Bryan did a performance, off TAXI I believe, in studio. My friend is a guy, about 30 years younger than Bryan. For whatever reason,he was put in charge of taking Bryan around, making sure things happened on time etc. After the show, Bryan insisted he join him for a drink. Wherein Bryan proceeded to slam whiskey, I believe, late into the night, until he became maudlin drunk, feeling sorry for himself, etc. My friend was embarassed, and though Bryan an alchoholic (and this from a beer swilling German!). I therefore found it interest to note that Bryan admitted his struggles with binge drinking int he Telegraph interview. No doubt there were troubles in his marriage, and I do know from first had reports, and I knew as far back as 85/86 that he and his wife were using drugs, part people whatever. Lucy was very much a part girl, which explains her drug rehab. Another friend of mine produced some of Bryan's video's like "Slave to Love" etc. Hopefully, as Bryan said the family life is in order, and things are good for him now. Early in the planning stage for Cliffhanger was a quote in the Sunday Times. I'm paraphrasing: Reporter: "Why have you decided to accept a part in Stallone's Cliffhanger?" BF: "Because I'm broke." Shortly afterwards, Bryan was reported to have sold his New York apartment to raise funds. And the next thing you know, he's among the 1997 Sunday Times' 500 richest people in Britain, only to disappear without trace the following year. The story I read was that a newspaper article described how pop stars invariably make awful actors, ridiculing the whole pop music to film migration. In the same story, describing how Stallone had read the newspaper article and dropped him, Ferry claimed that he had passed the screen test for Cliffhanger 'with flying colours'. Brook invented the Infinite Guitar, used to such beautiful effect on his solo albums, to which one Ben Arion (think 'anagram') added the occasional Arabic vocal and treatment. At one time, only two infinite guitars were said to exist: one was played by Brook, the other by The Edge, of U2. Its sonic beauty and The Edge's subtlety - and Brain One's co-production, of course - more than cancelled out Bono's devastating ego trip on things like With or Without You. Speaking of Eno's accomplices, I'd love to hear a Ferry album co-produced by Lanois. That man has a magical touch - albums like Oh Mercy and Time Out of Mind by Bob Dylan, as well tracks from Lanois' own Acadie are proof that this is one producer who has what it takes - studio mastery, intelligence, a love of music and sound, and empathy. He records with *feel*. Daniel Lanois wants to work with Neil Young - I'd love to hear the results of that, too. When you write something like this, the writer, the list owner and the ISP can all be found guilty of libel and of perpetuating a libel. We don't really know if Ferry's managment has spies here or whatever, and as far as I know, Ferry has never been found guilty in a court of law for dealing with drugs. Perhaps I'm too cautious here, but I'm a journalist, and these are questions that are often debated here in Sweden. I'm sure it's the same thing in Britain. I thought the crowd was as rude as they can get. I ran into Bryan in the airport on Sunday and ended up talking to him privately for about 45 minutes. It has more, I dunno, sound to it. Kind of like when he went into "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" after "Easy Living" (or whatever it was) at the DC show. It was as if someone had fiddled with the knobs and now all the speakers were working. So I guess I'm saying because of the production. And obviously also because of the arrangement which is meatier than what is on the rest of the album. Also, my take on the appearance on Craig Kilborn's show last night: If you didn't catch a show and you thought it was all like that, it wasn't. It was much better. And I thought the interview went OK. OK, Valentine, yes. But The Main Thing?! OK I will say this much--it was the one song on Avalon that I postively detested. Then I heard it on the Bete Noire tour . We were outisde, 15,000 strong, and it was beatly hot even though it was evening. 100F. Ferry kept stripping off clothes after every song. When he sang "who can sleep in this heat this night" we all laughed. But that version of the The Main Thing--I found myself wishing it would go on forever. It was as languid and as insistent as the experience of that show itself. And in keeping with the thread (or is it the other one?), if I never hear the Roxy version of In The Midnight Hour again, I could die a happy woman. He records with *feel*. Daniel At the risk of also making myself the locus of Red's scorn, I will offer that I do like some of the stuff Mr. Lanois has done in the past, and agree with Bahi's comments. I suppose it might be interesting, although it seems, to me, that at times Mr. Lanois' production takes over and yields a certain sameness--as opposed to a certain sound--in records. Which also leads me to ask if he is a good choice to work with Mr. Ferry. I guess I think that Mr. Ferry's original material needs to be tightened up somewhat, and I'm not sure that Lanois is the man for that particular job. Your mileage may vary, of course. Please, do tell us about it!! What a RARE and wonderful opportunity you experienced....What did he think of Vegas? The HOB? The young girls (like me) who still swoon over him?
