Le Petit Dejeuner. >Please explain "Le Petit Dejeuner." - I have no idea what that is. >Thanks A French TV-series about a small hotel. Ferry played himself in one episode, and it was totally hilarious. This is what Martino Sockman wrote about it: John O'brien sent me a box containing 12 (twelve) videotapes this week for the Avalonia project. My labour of love has been to view the contents of this treasure chest. Whilst dipping a marmite soldier into my boiled egg this morning I was idly perusing tape *11 when something entitled "Hotel Bouque" came up on the screen. An everyday story of a Parisian Guest House that just happens to have Le Groupe Roxy Musique staying over during their tour. Imagine Fawlty Towers directed by Francois Truffaut. Le patron has an improbably beautiful wife who Bryan appears to seduce right under his gallic nose. Lots of dreamy shots of Bry swanning around the City Of Light, consuming copious amounts of Disque Bleu, chatting up Mrs Patron in Franglais whilst harking back to the Late Madame Bouque, a previous lover, who has apparently died since his last tour. The band is played by actors seemingly cast by someone convinced that all Rock Stars look like the Eagles. The final scene is especially surreal as the real Roxy perform Editions of You in a real concert and during Andy's duckwalk solo Ferry jumps into the wings for a swig of fizz and a snog with Mrs Patron. The edition of the soap lasts half an hour and I can't see how I can edit it for the TV compilation. It may have to go on Avalonia in its entirity. Even when it is excrutiatingly embarassing it still makes for compelling viewing. At one point Bry insists on taking the "band" (+ groupies) into the hotel's kitchen to prepare an impromptu meal. He discussed this in an interview for a fashion insert which was issued free with The Guardian about 4 years ago (I think I passed this on to Bryan Chow who may be able to confirm). As I recall BF said Stallone heard a rumour that some English pop star had been slagging him off and immediately dropped him. ____________________________________ IMPORTANT - this e-mail and the information that it contains may be confidential, legally privileged and protected by law. Remembered as the suave, slick-haired leader of the stylish '70s art-rock band Roxy Music, he didn't look all that different last night, in his black-leather trousers, black-tuxedo jacket and white shirt open at the collar. The lanky, dark-haired singer fronted a first-rate 13-piece band, including a female string quartet and harpist, a four-man horn section and a pianist, guitarist and bassist. In his signature high, fluttery voice, Ferry featured tunes from his latest album, "As Times Goes By," as well as key Roxy Music songs and material from his many solo albums. With the smart orchestral arrangements, the band in black gowns and tuxes, and the glittering lights and mirrorball, the Paramount took on the ambience of a swank '30s nightclub in, say, London, Paris or Berlin. I longed for a martini, a dance floor and glamorous companions. After some soothing pieces by the harpist, string quartet and full band, Ferry strolled on stage, hand in pocket, and crooned "The Way You Look Tonight." He favored slower, romantic songs, like "Love Me Or Leave Me," "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," "Lover Come Back to Me," "I Can't Get Started With You" (with references to FDR and Garbo), "Where Or When," "You Do Something to Me," and, of course, "As Times Goes By." His fragile, quavering voice and straightforward delivery gave the songs a delicate charm, as if they were rare, precious gems. His "September Song" was especially haunting. "Falling In Love Again" was as wry and cynical as Garbo's famous version. He must've felt he had to do "Love Is the Drug," Roxy Music's biggest hit, but "Avalon" and "Do the Strand," and even such cover songs as "Jealous Guy" and "Let's Stick Together," worked better in the context of the concert. One of the most moving songs was his sweet, folkish tribute to Ireland, "Carrickfergus." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #383 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
