I quite like Psalm's ambiguity now (Bryan sounds like a man spinning right out of control and into complete insanity) but still can't listen to it often. When I first heard it, it sounded either too sneering and ironic, given the subject material, or as if Bryan was trying to sound sincere but couldn't quite do it. I could hardly believe he'd recorded it On a related note, Answer Me is the only recording on Taxi that I can't stomach. It sounds cold and distant, almost threatening. But the other day I heard an almost religious version of the same song, perhaps dating back to the '50s. (On John Peel's Peelennium slot.) It was wonderful. The words had been changed so that the song questioned God, and suddenly it sounded sublime. 'My Love' became 'my Lord' and 'if she's happier without me, I'll try not to care' sounded much better than the line that Ferry sings. A brief search for that version of lyric turned up nothing except a terrifying MIDI moment that reminds me of the melody I heard on the radio but also (on this machine, at least) recalls cheap Bontempi keyboards. Your machines need some kind of MIDI sound player and appropriate browser config to hear this (most Macs and PCs qualify).
