Just got home from a lovely evening with Mr. Bryan Ferry, in Seattle While I am not the kind to give a set list etc. (I'll leave that for someone else), I'll give my report... We arrived and found parking easily about 30 minutes before the show. ...Nice thing about Seattle. Low stress... Arriving outside the theatre, I will say that I was entirely disapointed by the "Northern Exposure no longer chic" attire of too many of the typical laid back Seattlites. "In furs or blue jeans," maybe, but Bryan did say before this tour, to his audience, for this one, "I guess you'll have to dress." Nonetheless there were a few in attendence dressed nicely. I wore my understated Armani (faint) pinstripe suit and my princess Julia wore a beautiful blue evening gown straight out of the era. Blue jean blanks would not dampen the romance of our romantic evening.... The concert began as the others, with a winning harp solo, and then the strings, etc., as I am sure has been reported ad naseum. (Hopefully someone can provide the set list to compare if it was identical to the others, as I imagine it was) - --Unbelievably, due to life and geographic constraints, this was only the 3rd time in 22 years I've been able to see Bryan live. Coming from a small town myself, the revelation of Bryan and Roxy were a huge influence on me, stylistically, artistically, the whole 9 yards... So, the prosepect of seeing him for the first time since the Avalon tour, was really emotional. Now, I am male, but I am not above letting my emotions show -- and this show had a lot of emotion for me. At times I went between giggling with joy, looking on with reverence/gratitude, to laughing with inside joke/roxy knowingness, to tears. (When the string gals did the Jerry Hall part in "Let's Stick Together," it seemed like those in the know in the audience cracked up along with Bryan's winning smile, while the other half of the audience wondered why we were laughing! Tears: Carrickfergus, was a show stopper, and I thought more poignant and emotional the TBSB version. I thought his voice and intonations were better. Someone next to me was crying. And I had water all over my eyes. I want a CDR from this SHOW!!! I tried hard not to memorize the set lists here, so I could be surprised, as I was by the Roxy and other solo numbers. So I could go through those moments of enjoyment and celebration, naturally in a simple way. I didn't care if those around me, or my girlfriend were bothered by my low singing along to some songs, or tapping my feet or dancing. So I just enjoyed myself, to myself, in a way, with Bryan, laid back audience be damned. (No one was dancing in the ailses like Oakland). It has always been my feeling that somewhere along the line (early) Bryan had a rough life. There were demons to be slayed. When I see him perform, I see the triumph over them -- when he breaks into smile and has fun with the performance -- I see the hurdles he surmounted. Maybe some is mythologizing, son of the dirt poor miner etc. But I think that passion, that romantic, that avante gardish intelligence came from somewhere.... As glamorous, wealthy, successful and insolated as Bryan may have made himself over the years, I never forget that he came from "us." He came from about as far down as you can, in a tough classist society. The glamour, the success, the backdrops have all been acts of will, work and intelligence. And protection. And it reminds me, that even in ordinary, or challenging times in life, it is possible to tear off a little corner of glamour, romance, and yes, artistic indulgence, for oneself. If you don't, who will? And Bryan is a great example of this. And I feel that sense of liberation, accomplishment (the intellectual Roxy songs), and joy in his performance. ...I don't know....this is just my personal perspective....but I would hope somewhere in fabric of the artistic life he weaves, that he'd hope some of us got it in that way. That there has always been that triumph of substance over style, with well, STYLE. Some will still just see it as style. The casual fan. The poseur fan. I've always seen it as heart and brain, filtered through art and style. And as we know stateside, this was never a pop conquering mix here. But it works for me. :-) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 09:38:06 -0000 From: "Johnny Reece" Subject: [AVALON] Re : CDs jewel case Hi Fred - sorry don't now have Avalon jewel-case, just Siren, Stick, F & B, Taxi left (as of Sat evening - I'm not back at work till Tue). Yes, Vegas was the best!!! I also won at roulette and got a video poker jackpot! But it was the atmosphere of Vegas, the glitz, the glamor that set apart this show from any one I'd seen before. At first I was a little concerned that the show would be underattended - there were so many empty seats. This was OK with the four of us, because we moved to the middle ASAP, with a great overview of the stage and some crazed fans in front near the stage (Hi, Dawne!).:) Kym (my wife), Erin and Lydia are all great fans of Bryan and Roxy, and I wasn't about to spoil their experience with reports from the list. I merely teased that he had a 30s band and would play the majority of songs from ATGB. Kym and I had watched "Swing Time" the previous week ("The Way You Look Tonight") so we were already in the mood, and the other two were up for anything short of Bry reciting ee cummings. The harpist and string quartet openers got a decent response from the crowd, but I couldn't help wonder how many folks had arrived blind. As the show progressed latecomers appeared gradually (an older crowd of silver foxes and sequined ladies debuted), and after the initial standards it all settled into a very tasteful affair. That was my last thought for the time being about the audience's motivation. Then, with the first few notes of "Chance Meeting," I felt Erin's fingernails dig into my arm. Hearing the enossifications mimicked by the strings and the overall dissonance replicated to a T by the balding men caused us to comment that we might want to hear a whole album of "symphonic Roxy Music." But who would really want "one style served here?" For example, upon hearing "Carrickfergus" could one imagine a whole album of folk Ferry? From there the band flew through a whirlwind of perfectly executed renditions of Roxy/solo favorites. Except for the quiet interludes of "Sunset" and "The Only Face," the second half of the show was fairly rockin', with "Let's Stick Together" bringing quite a few people to their feet. As Dawne mentioned, "LITD" was a new addition; it and "Avalon" really brought the place alive. Many folks I prejudged to be walk-ins now appeared to act just like the long-time Roxy followers! When "Do the Strand" had ended there was enough noise and enthusiasm in the place to encourage another encore, but I knew it was over. On the way out a group of us agreed that "Out of the Blue" would have sounded great with this band. Lucy Williams was a stand-out violinist and Enrico Tomasso played a mean trumpet. After the show we perused the merchandise where the ladies cooed after the posters, particularly the "moping" Ferry. Kym bought the ATGB promo for $8 and tried to sneak backstage. No go! Dawne was right. Bryan had left the building! We danced at HOB for an hour or so, then headed off for a bite to eat and bed. Sorry we missed you, Dawne; it sounds like Studio 54 was the place to be! If you're looking for romance with a hint of sleaze I highly recommend Vegas as THE venue for your future Roxy Music reunion plans! Containing sons fro 1973 to tracks from Ferry's 'Mamouna' release in 1994, this spans one of the most artistic singers of this generation. Included are rare never-before-seen in the US clips of 'The Main Thing', 'A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall', 'These Foolish Things', along with the standards of 'Slave To Love', 'Jealous Guy', and 'Same Old Scene'. The dress was pretty casual, but then, people don't even dress up for the opera in Seattle! The few exceptions were the list members I met and one woman wearing what looked suspiciously like groupie attire. Bryan and his orchestra brought the thirties numbers to life, which I felt came across much better in the live show than on the album. The crowd was appreciative, but didn't really get into it until 'Casanova,' which was one of the highlights for me as well as "Just One of Those Things' and 'The Only Face.' After the latter, I heard a man a few seats away from me saying "That was so much better than on Mamouna!" As with the other shows, 'Avalon' got everyone on their feet and dancing during LST and LITD. It ended on a very high note; one guy was "doing the strand" in the aisle during the final encore, which got quite a few laughs. As this was the first Ferry concert I've been to I don't have any basis for comparison, but he looked and sounded wonderful, and seemed to be in great mood, thanking everyone he could think of and smiling a lot. But enough about the actual concert! Afterwards, 15 or so of us fans braved the cold and waited for ages outside the stage door. I got to know a few current and former Avalonians during the wait, which was kind of funny - I was talking to Rick from Japan and a woman nearby said "Are you talking about that internet thing? I used to be on that!" So there are more of us than we think... Bryan finally emerged and sat in the van smiling, saying thank you, and posing for pictures while people took turns babbling at him about how great he was. I was too broke to buy any souvenirs, but I did get my ticket stub signed, and then the highlight of my life occurred when he compliemented me on my glitter - "I like your eye stuff," to be exact.
