My Shop is in North London (Crouch Hill, Crouch End) and is called Listen... Don't know whether I'd quite describe it as 'fantastic' or not but i like it (particularly with the FYP Mirror on the wall, of course). You know the size of HMV in Oxford St ? Well, divide the size of their floor space by about a million, and that's mine. We are hoping to expand to be able to have space to swing two cats, rather than just the one. We do Vinyl & CD - mainly s/hand - but do do about 100 or so New Release CDs every week for between £9 - £10 each as well, just to annoy 'Our Price' who are about 100 yards away. Of course, we don't make anything on them - but it amuses us all the same. Anyone read the book 'High Fidelity' by Nick Hornby ? Well, so far we've had over 40 people ask us if the Book is about our Shop. I didn't know what they were talking about - so had to buy the book to find out. Incidentally - it's not about us (I don't think) but it isn't half accurate about the strange world of 'life in a Record Shop'. Frighteningly so. Some of you will have read it and know what I mean, as it's a bit of a 'cult' Book here in the UK... Someone mentioned about 'faves' of the year etc - it hasn't been a great year for albums - but I do think Bowies new one is pretty cool , though now you've got me thinking - I'll have to dig out this years stuff and see what's what. Interesting though, that this time, when I'm asked about 'Album Of the Year' - one doesn't immediately spring to mind. 'Deserters Songs' by Mercury Rev is one I discovered in recent months which is strange but good - might be last year though, that particular one. BTW - Album of the Decade ? I'd plump for 'Formica Blues' by Mono - and I'm sorry to say that I may be the only one on this list who has heard of it - it didn't exactly set the world on fire, as it didn't get the airplay it so richly deserved by the alleged Radio Stns in the UK (they still prefer instead to play music by airbrushed children). Seriously though - if any one of you sees a copy - buy it ! - and if you don't like it - I'll buy it off you - as it's the only Album I've ever known that I can play in my Shop - and have someone come up and ask for it - straight off. True ! It's one of those half 60s/half 90s/dreamy/French style/with a bit of Bacharach thrown in type of affairs, if ya know what I mean. Of course, the mighty 'Mamouna' is up there somewhere too, of course... Meanwhile - there's been so much talk here of 'Music Of The Millenium - and it's got to be FYP - by the odd mile or thousand. Oops ! - Scotsman ranting again. I'll quieten down now and head off to work. Have a good weekend... Reecey... I've read it - it's a nice book, although not so amazingly funny as one could think from all the media hoopla. I've also read About a boy and seen the film about the football guy (with Colin Firth). When I read it, I kept thinking of Camden and the sort of people one can see in that area. When I was an au pair-girl in London, I lived in Hampstead Garden Suburb and my tubestation was Golders Green. Every time I went in to town I would pass Camden, and pretty soon I began to recognize the different kinds of people who got off att each station. "Is that a Camden boy? No, more Belsize Park...and that one must belong to something north of Brent Cross...". Scotland's Texas was probably my favorite, they are in their prime now. They don't have the depth and darkness of Ferry's music, but have the ambiance and layers I like so much. I only joined this list about a week or so ago, and I tried posting a couple of times, but I don't think I did it right because I never saw my messages turn up in the archives. Anyhow, my name is Rickmond Wong, and I've flown in all the way from Japan to Seattle to see Bryan Ferry! I was reading the archives just moments ago when I saw that good last minute seats had gone on sale for the Paramount show, and so I logged into Ticketmaster and what did I find... SECOND ROW! Sec. MF2, row B, seat 12! In case any of you are interetested, it's Saturday morning here, the day before the show, and it appears there are good single and pair seats left for the first few rows. Anyhow, if what has been posted is true, and BF's friend Dr. Puxley has passed away, then I would understand completely if the concert gets canceled (though I really, really, really hope it doesn't.) Sigh. Anyway, if any of you would like to meet a new guy that's never posted before, feel free to introduce yourselves. Thanks! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am glad to see the usual helpings of philosophy and geo-politics. I really like to read on this list pages and pages of hi-brow discussion about really important topics of the world. I think Avalarf should become a portal where along with BF news we can pick up just about everything else that's going on on the planet. This portal does not need to restrict itself to BF news; it should become a global soap-box. One request - can we try to keep down the number of postings related to BF/Roxy, the tour, the record etc. since sometimes I find myself wading thru some of these just to get to a meaty discussion about poverty. I've called him a spin doctor on the list a few times but that doesn't convey the real story : he was a fan, a fan just like us, a fan who had the talent to put into words these extraordinary moodscapes that we all love so much. I have seen some of you write about other artists mailing lists and say that they are pretty tame by comparison. Maybe the fact that Bryan brings out an album every 5 years means that all we've got to do in the time in between is talk about his music. This list is a bit like Bryan's music where there are so many styles, I mean you can make a 20 song cassette for your granny and she would love it and also make another one with a different 20 songs for the wee 18 year old young and trendy that you work with and he'll love it too, but if you mixed up the tapes then they would both hate the tapes, such is the diversity of his work. This is probably what I like about his music more than anything. It's all chained and bound together with his golden thread of style. The list is a bit like that. you have the anoraks who supply the minutest details of something from 20 years ago the up to the minute info on record releases and tours opinions which differ so much on past releases controversy which we find non English speaking Avalonians looking up there native/English dictionary to see what F@~#ing and A@#hole means Information, archive photos etc being shared throughout the world friendships being formed. people meeting at shows etc and pilgrimages to events like RFH happening (I'm sure a lot of the 30 odd peole who are going to RFH are going not just to see big Bryan, but to meet everyone else) kicki's wbsite and all it offers not everyone subscribes to all the different angles to this list, I' am sure that there are some topics that everyone has as their "don't bother reading" (their Another Time Another Place) but as I say the whole thing is on a parrallel with Bryan's music. An interesting wee observation recently is that of the concern for Bryan no longer being a top 10 singles chart man every time. Polls have shown that most prefer Roxy to Bryan solo. The most successful period he had was the singles from Manifesto& Flesh And Blood which had 4 top 10 hits between them, but these 2 roxy albums are the most critisised by the list, with Siren being a close third which has probably Bryan's most famous self penned song Love IsThe Drug which got to number 2. Just like Bryan's music we are full of irony.
