I overheard some people behind me saying that they were leaving because it was a boring show. Others may have left early to avoid the mad rush of cars in Oakland. :) While it was a good show, it did lack the energy of previous shows. I will agree with you on that. I agree that the acoustics were good but I thought the sound system made his voice sound like a P.A. system. I'm a bit spoiled with my home system, I admit. But his voice did not sound as "musical" as I remember from prior concerts. All in all, I enjoyed the concert immensely. However, I was unlucky enough to sit beside a man who's girlfriend found it necessary to have a constant discussion about the proceedings -- most distracting. And the clown who was yelling the most (and loudest) was just several rows behind me. I felt a bit homicidal for a while until I refocused to the music. Even though the concert in general did not have the energy previous concerts had, I accept our aging process and the reality that this CD's music's very nature is more subdued. The variety, I found, to be stimulating nonetheless. BTW, all those people who left prior to the end of the concert, was that the group that met Bryan afterwards? While my wife and I had seen Ferry before (she still doesn't forgive me for not taking her with me when I saw Roxy Music when we were dating back in the latter part of the 1970's) it was a first for the kids to see him. We ALL had a magnificent time. Bryan winked at Tamara which made her night and I was lucky enough to get a hand shake near the end of the show. The 95 minute show was a delicious mix of cuts from "As Time Goes By" and titles from Roxy/Ferry's catalogue. And I just loved the backing band!!!! The horns, strings, harp, piano and bass players were al quite excellent. A couple of times he said something like "I wish we could play here every year "...... don't I wish too! His 10th solo album, ``As Time Goes By,'' is a stripped-down collection of cover songs from the '30s that includes Cole Porter and Kurt Weill compositions. Ferry, 54, brings his typical poise to the material, as fans will witness when he appears at the Paramount Theatre tomorrow night. Next year, Ferry will oversee the reissue of his entire back catalog, which includes digitally remastered versions of all the Roxy Music albums. Q: When did you first start wearing the fancy suits? A: I suppose it was when I was 15 and played Malvolio in ``Twelfth Night.'' There was a review in one of the local newspapers, and I remember that there was a photograph of me next to it. That was the first picture of myself in a newspaper. It was like a quick flash of fame. Q: And you were hooked after that? A: Well, I suppose dressing up as somebody else was much easier than going onstage as myself. To become somebody else was fabulous. I think that carried over into what I did with Roxy Music. Q: Do you blow a lot of money on clothes? A: Not really. I don't really keep up with any fashions lately because men's clothes hardly change at all, and I don't really wear trainers and track suits. There are plenty of people doing that. So I just kind of feel very comfortable in kind of old dog things, really. Q: What do you wear to the grocery store? A: What I'm wearing now -- a mixture of stuff, really. I don't put a tie on, particularly, but I've taken a lot to wearing suede shoes recently. Q: You have a thing for shoes, don't you? A: I suppose maybe I do. (Laughs) I don't know. Q: If you had to write for a dictionary company, how would you define glamorous? A: I don't really have a fixed notion of glamour. It depends. I love the glamour of Las Vegas -- the extravagance of showgirls with long false eyelashes, masses of hair and high heels. I think that's fabulous, even though it's completely tacky. Q: That description fits most of the Roxy Music album covers in the '70s. Can you explain those now? A: The girls on ``Country Life'' were the sister and girlfriend of Michael Karoli from the German group Can. We wanted it to be like they were at some amazing country house party, caught in the headlights of a car as they emerged from some encounter in their underwear. To me, the cover girls were like my ideal fans. It was rather like designing the perfect fan as well as the music. Q: Do you still keep in touch with the guys in Roxy Music? A: Yeah. In fact, on this album, even though all of the tracks are done with either strings or with jazz players who play in that old idiom, there's one song that I couldn't resist doing with electric guitar (``I'm in the Mood for Love'') -- and Phil Manzanera plays the guitar on that one. I sort of speak to Andy MacKay. Brian Eno, who was in the band the first two albums, I keep in touch with. He plays on quite a lot of the stuff I've been doing in the last few years. Q: Don't you find him a bit creepy? A: He can be a very cuddly character sometimes. Q: What is the nature of your relationship? A: His main job, I would say, is working with U2 now. But we wrote a song together which, hopefully, will come out next year. It was really good to work with him again, somebody as intelligent as that, really. It's good to have ideas flying back and forth. Q: There must be a natural chemistry there. A: So true. At the same time, some strange compulsion makes you leave it at some point, to do something different. And that's also natural as well. Q: What possessed you to make an acoustic album of cover songs from the 1930s at the turn of the century? A: The '30s was a fantastic period visually, I think, and musically as well. I think it was when, for me, some of the best popular songs were written. And why that should be, I don't know. I've been pondering this lately and doing interviews and stuff. Q: Have you come up with any good theories? A: I suppose partly it's because there was this kind of really good platform where you could display the songs, if you like Broadway musicals and Hollywood film musicals. People in that period specialized in songwriting -- they weren't usually performers who wrote songs. Also, I think, conservatory-trained proper musicians were turning their hand to it as well. You can see it in the beautiful chords and great melodies that were written at the time. Q: How did you pick the songs that ended up on ``As Time Goes By''? A: When I look at this list of songs now, I think a lot of them I've known since I was really young. And it's funny that it would take me all this time to get round to doing an album like this, which apart from anything else felt very refreshing to do with real instruments as opposed to something manufactured. Q: Are you going to play any of your own songs at the show, like ``Pyjamarama''? A: Well, I don't know -- one or two things might creep in, it depends on rehearsals. But at the moment, it's going to be this album, basically. It's not a rock 'n' roll tour. ©1999 San Francisco Chronicle Page 47 - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 21:28:41 -0600 From: "Edward & Jennifer Kolkman" Subject: [AVALON] Hello, and by the way My name is Edward and I hail from Burlington, Iowa. I joined the mailing list about a year ago and just sort of lurked around picking up info, but of course nothing of new was happening with respect to Bryan's career so I slinked off after a short time. Fast forward to Sept.99, I hadn't been to Bryan Chow's site in months, so I slipped in and my jaw dropped, BF on tour in the US! Closest venue: Chicago. I was there 2nd row 2nd seat in from the aisle, I was there stag (my wife only tolerates my BF obsession, I love her anyway) After the show, it was obvious that a cab would be a bit of a wait so I floated around out front eavesdropping. I then noticed a group of people heading around the side of the Riveria theatre, intrigued I followed. I ended up waiting, I don't know how long, and visiting with some interesting people. All the while hoping for an autograph, I must say I was quite sure all I would get would be a fleeting glimpse. Of course, BF graciously signed for everyone so the night just kept getting better. While waiting though, a well dressed gentleman in a ball cap mentioned to someone this mailing list. (I beleive his name is Jas?) I then made sure that when I returned after the weekend I would again join the list. I think I'm here to stay. I mean geez, Bryan, like those suave looks, that cool persona, that smoldering voice weren't enough. No, you had to go and record an album of heartaching and incredibly swanky standards from the '30s. Songs like "The Way You Look Tonight," "You Do Something To Me" and "Where or When." But really, what should I expect from a man who's been doing covers of songs since 1973 (like "Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Sympathy for the Devil" and "It's My Party," even!), and recorded one of the most seductive album of all time, "Avalon," with Roxy Music? So it's no surprise that you'd return to the music scene with "As Time Goes By," recreating these classic songs with calypso touches or sparsely elegant arrangement. And so tonight, you'll be up there on the Paramount Theatre stage (a perfect setting for this show by the way), live and in the well-dressed flesh, crooning these tunes, plus others from your solo and Roxy Music catalog, in your own very dapper way. The Paramount in Oakland was restored, I believe in the early 80's. I remember "acting" in a film shot in front of it when it was boarded up an abandoned in late 70/early 80. Work had just commenced, or was about to, but it was yet to open. I believe it opened, if memory serves, to the Coppala restored version of Abel Gance's "Napoleon." Ironically, now living in Seattle (who isn't), I will be attending the Sunday Night show at the Seattle Paramount, a similarly restored venue. Thanks to Bryan I will be there in my Armani suit.
