Roxy was never about going back, but going forward, even if it wasn't as good at times. Why would they use one of the bass players who already played with them? Wouldn't they want someone new to help create a new sound? Hopefully it won't just be a "reunion" but more of a "reformation" as you put it. I'd take Marcus Miller, who actually played on some of Ferry's solo stuff. He could play all the different styles flawlessly, inject new life into the old material and would be a better choice than one of the 15+ players who played on a tour leg or an album or two. If it had to be one of the originals, I'd take Gary Tibbs, he did the old stuff much better than Alan Spenner, but could also play the Spenner fretless material real well. Wetton was great too, but I lost him in the heat of the moment (sorry, bad joke, but so was Asia). As far as Paul Thompson, nobody will deny his impact on the bands hard driving sound, but again, moving forward I think someone else may be a better fit 20 years later. If there is no EJ, then how about some new virtuoso violin and/or keyboard player? Or another instrumentalist? Something new and different, just like when they changed it around in the 70's and early 80's. Something innovative, not Bryan, Andy, Phil and Eric Clapton's backup band please. I, as well as a group of others, were able to meet Bryan after the show and he was nice. The first time I saw him was Nov.1994, at the Palace Theatre in New Haven, CT. I enjoyed that show a lot more. He played more songs, and for a longer period. The Palace is a little smaller than the Oakland Paramount and the crowd was very subdued. The Monday crowd was a bit raucous. I found that he was hard to hear at this Oakland show, and maybe others have had a hard time hearing him as well.? The venue itself was very appropriate for a Bryan Ferry show and the acoustics were great. Just my thoughts.... I must note, I haven't been reading the list postings for a while, I didn't want to read anything concerning the concert before I went myself. Now I'm doing some catch-up ... First the nits ... The leather trousers. Didn't he wear similar (if not the same) ones on his tour in 1994? Couldn't he come up with a different look for this tour? Also regarding the last tour: Last time around, he played two nights at the Berkeley Community Theatre and $35 got you any seat in the house. This time, only one show at the Paramount Theatre, and $35 got you a seat in the balcony, with the most expensive seats going for $75 each. Hopefully the rising prices aren't a trend; it's probably blasphemy for me to say so, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay _any_ price to see Bryan in concert. I'm not terribly familiar with the hall, but I believe the Paramount Theatre is an old art deco movie theatre, restored in the '70s and made into a general performance facility. Very nice. Based on the accounts of the other cities' shows, it sounds like this show was similar to the others in arrangement and execution. I don't recall any dress changes for Bryan, as in some other shows; however, after noting his leather chaps, I didn't pay much attention to his attire. It was all a fairly quiet affair, with the audience seated except for "Let's Stick Together," the encore's "Do the Strand," and an ovation for "Avalon." Memorable moment: before playing one of the Roxy numbers, Ferry stated something to the effect, "I hope you remember this one," to which an exuberant audience member shouted, "I do!" Coming _before_ the commencement of the song, the comment drew a few laughs from the audience. Great show. Good venue, decent sound. Come back soon, Bryan. Charming. I liked the blacking singers. I can't picture Wetton singing Yanickk's part in Avalon. He still looses points for Asia too. I loved Fonzi Thorton too. I think they put in too much backing vox with the big band though (like Out of the Blue), may have been to justify having them there. Still I don't see why they would take one of the 70's bass players if half the original band won't even be part of the new lineup, if there even is one. Just a quick line to introduce myself. I looked out for Roxy lists a couple a years ago when we got a web connection at work but I didn't find anything. The reissues of a couple of months ago rekindled my roxy interest and I looked out again for web stuff. I was delighted to find such a busy list and links to good web pages. I celebrated my fortieth birthday this year which means that I was 14 in the 1973. Roxy were the first band I really got into. I was a member of Leay's fanclub for three or so years (number 221 in fact) until I went to university and lost interest. I saw Roxy live at Leeds University for the CL and the Siren tours. And then at Wembley for the F+B tour. F+B was the last album I bought - I never got around to buying Avalon until the new reissues came out altho I guess I have heard most of the tracks over the years. I much prefer the earlier Roxy - the tracks have more energy. However, having said that, and having listened to some of the later stuff for the first time recently, I have been struck by how hypnotic some of the melodies are. I love the new reissues and have them arranged on my units at home. I bought most of mine from Amazon UK for £9.99. Has anybody seen the Taxi and Mamouna reissues? How have they handled the big CD booklets? I held out from buying Bryan's new CD for a few weeks but I bought it last w/e at Mr CD in Soho. I love it. I like nostalgia but often its energy gets lost in a uniform thirties tinniness. This new selection really strips the songs to their core and highlights the lyrics. Bryan's vocals seem more underplayed now and all the better for it. After listening to all of my vinyl stuff for the first time in twenty years the only song which makes me cringe is Song for Europe. I didn't know Bryan was touring until a few days ago. The Royal Festival Hall have now sold their allocation but I was able to get a ticket with First Call altho I was horrified to pay £6 booking fee plus an extra £1.20 for postage. This is pre concert scalping! I think the seat is pretty good tho ( in row D) so I hope to see some of you there. I was really interested to read on the list the thirty or so questions to ask of Bryan. I too would like to know what Paul Thompson is doing. Does anyone know? Before this rekindled interest, my most recent enthusiasm has been for the Pet Shop Boys. Are there any fans on the list? I am going to see them in Prague next w/e and have tickets to see them in Brighton and Wembley next month. Of course they are touring North America at the moment. I now work as a medical librarian for the British Medical Association and live in Highbury in London UK. I have learned a lot from the list in the last couple of days - here's to more! all the best Richard - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 16:37:23 EST From: EKAKES@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Uncut Magazine article - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 16:37:59 EST From: EKAKES@aol.com Subject: Re: [AVALON] Uncut Magazine article how do I find it? These texts are long and take some time to read. I've tried to make the text as easy to read as possible. Load the pages and then read off line... I think it was Martini Stockman who said that Ferry himself considered this radiopiece to be the "definete" work about him. Read it and see for yourselves at the Avalonsite - http://home.op.se/opse3503 . A note to those of you who want to be profiled on the site and don't know how to go about it: All you have to do is mail me the info you want to put in your profile. Look at the other profiles for inspiration and write in the same manner: Age: Something Lives: Somewhere Work: Something etc etc etc You don't have to include a picture, but if you do, send it as an attached jpg-file with your mail. The resolution doesn't have to be higher than 72 pixels/inch. If you don't know how to scan a photograph but really want to add it to your page, you can always send it with regular mail and I'll scan it for you. Don't worry about the HTML-stuff! Hello Richard, I am also a [mild] Pet Shop Boys fan. I live in San Francisco and they were here in concert about 2 weeks ago. I did not see the show, but I did meet them at Tower Records for a signing. I got some good pictures from that. Bryan Ferry was just in town on Monday and I did see that show and met him as well. While I think the concert was good, I thought his 1994 Mamouna show was a lot better. I see that you are a librarian. How interesting... I went to school for librarianship as well. I looked into doing some additional studying at UCLondon, but it was a little too expensive and they do not issue credit, but a certificate of attendance. I am now working as a Knowledge Engineer in the Silicon Valley. Look forward to 'seeing' you on the list. And enjoy your upcoming concerts!! I agree that the acoustics were good but I thought the sound system made his voice sound like a P.A. system. I'm a bit spoiled with my home system, I admit. But his voice did not sound as "musical" as I remember from prior concerts. All in all, I enjoyed the concert immensely. However, I was unlucky enough to sit beside a man who's girlfriend found it necessary to have a constant discussion about the proceedings -- most distracting. And the clown who was yelling the most (and loudest) was just several rows behind me. I felt a bit homicidal for a while until I refocused to the music. Even though the concert in general did not have the energy previous concerts had, I accept our aging process and the reality that this CD's music's very nature is more subdued. The variety, I found, to be stimulating nonetheless. BTW, all those people who left prior to the end of the concert, was that the group that met Bryan afterwards?
