Which one was that Hi Frida Bryan recorded "I'll see you again" on the excellent "Twentieth Century Blues" tribute to Coward, which was organised by Neil Tennant. It's patchy but contains some gems...Marriane Faithfull's wonderful cockney rendition of "Mad about the Boy' is outstanding. And, (though it pains me to say it,) Sting's "I'll folllow my secret heart" is easy on the ears. I'm disapppointed to hear that he's not playing "I'll see you again" on the present tour yet delighted to see that Otis et al have got the old man into Massive Attack and Portishead. A curious addendum : I notice that Sinatra ("a grumpy old man - BF") did what can only be described as a Ferry tribute album called "Point Of No Return." This late 50s album contains the following .... "These Foolish Things," "September Song," "As Time Goes By," and "I'll See You Again." I must note, I haven't been reading the list postings for a while, I didn't want to read anything concerning the concert before I went myself. Now I'm doing some catch-up ... First the nits ... The leather trousers. Didn't he wear similar (if not the same) ones on his tour in 1994? Couldn't he come up with a different look for this tour? Also regarding the last tour: Last time around, he played two nights at the Berkeley Community Theatre and $35 got you any seat in the house. This time, only one show at the Paramount Theatre, and $35 got you a seat in the balcony, with the most expensive seats going for $75 each. Hopefully the rising prices aren't a trend; it's probably blasphemy for me to say so, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay _any_ price to see Bryan in concert. I'm not terribly familiar with the hall, but I believe the Paramount Theatre is an old art deco movie theatre, restored in the '70s and made into a general performance facility. Very nice. Based on the accounts of the other cities' shows, it sounds like this show was similar to the others in arrangement and execution. I don't recall any dress changes for Bryan, as in some other shows; however, after noting his leather chaps, I didn't pay much attention to his attire. It was all a fairly quiet affair, with the audience seated except for "Let's Stick Together," the encore's "Do the Strand," and an ovation for "Avalon." Memorable moment: before playing one of the Roxy numbers, Ferry stated something to the effect, "I hope you remember this one," to which an exuberant audience member shouted, "I do!" Coming _before_ the commencement of the song, the comment drew a few laughs from the audience. Great show. Good venue, decent sound. Come back soon, Bryan. Right now we're worried about getting there on time (from Pasadena and L.A.) after work; but maybe there'll be a chance to meet up for drinks before the evening's out. For the 150+ non UK Avalonians we have a couple of soccer games over here, pathetically dubbed the "Battle Of Britain" by the tabs in Remembrance week, and I was having a little tease with our kilted Roxyana over England's 2-0 drubbing of Scotland last Saturday. All is sweet and lovely at Stockman Towers. Thanks to another Anglo-Scot Rob Whiteford I received a videotape of the three recent television appearances. I thought the NetAid performance was very forced with Bry furiously attempting to stir Kofi Annan out of his seat. Lets Stick Together has to be dirty and bluesy not a wafer thin after dinner mint. His performance on Later, complete with tour orchestra, was a different matter. I cannot leave "Falling in Love Again" off the compilation tape (Current working title..."A Perfumed Sigh" ..celluloid pictures of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry 1972-1999;) Indeed I found my 4 year old daughter, Rachael Roxy, sawing away on her child's guitar with a wooden kitchen fork to the strains of this song on tape this morning. She can't understand why her schoolfriends are more interested in Geri Halliwell than a 55 year old cruise shark. Red-blooded Avalonion Noam must not be pilloried for drooling over the quite luscious harpist.
