Hi, everybody. I am new to the list, but I see that I have already been mentioned: I am one of the two guys who sat next to Jas at the Chicago show. I just want to clarify one or two of Jas's points (sorry, Jas!) First, I thought Bryan's voice in Chicago was distinctly BETTER than on the new disc. Secondly, Bryan's second outfit was a Tailcoat, not a waistcoat. But it was just as fabulous as Jas said, and would look great on Jas, but not, alas, on me. Third, Jas mentioned the lighting in passing. I am a professional lighting designer, and I say it was first rate. Lastly, it was the string section who did the yelping. And they are much cooler than any post I have read would imply. All in all, a fabulous show. Now I'm sure when I mention Donegal the first thing that springs into your minds is Daniel O Donnell. And I must give my sincere apologies for this man. Richard Swift may mourn his horrible fate at being dragged off to watch Cliff Richard bring in the new milllenium but that is small fry compared to having Daniel O Donnell as your county's mascot. Anyway I'm sitting in front of a lovely warm fire, getting a first glimpse at my Bryan Ferry tickets for Glasgow and Newcastle. My da's co-worker (an architect)is sketchily reminiscing about attending one of the very early Roxy concerts ("possibly 74, though it could have been earlier") in Crystal Palace ("possibly") and organised by a famous architect of the time called Peter Cook (no, not Dudley Moore's trusty sidekick). He said it was the trendiest gathering of architects he's ever come across in his career. And still I'm dead chuffed at my tickets. "ITB proudly presents Bryan Ferry in concert". Wuuuuuhoooooo. The Newcastle City Hall has even included a calender of events for the coming months in Newcastle. So I wonder what is happening elsewhere on the same night as our Maestro is taking the stage. What might be going on in the Newcastle Arena for example. SHOCK! HORROR! Yes you damn well guessed it, that bloody fool Daniel O Donnel is performing on the very same night as Bryan in Newcastle. My Da is bent over laughing, my Ma says she's going to tell everyone that I'm heading especially to Newcastle just to catch "wee Daniel", and my brother states that "The Blue Rinse Brigade" will be out in force that night. Oh God, what did I do to deserve this fate. Drastic action is needed. I figure as long as we stay away from the coffee bars, and the B&B's we should be out of harms way. But I'm suspicious. It's as if somebody is out to get me. Surely the coincidences are not destined to end here. "Oh Danny Boy, the pipes the pipes are calling" AH WOULD YA EVER SHUT THE F*** UP. Thanks for this Robert cos I definitely wouldn't have stuck with this programme had it not been for Bryan's appearance. The setting was perfect - just as I'd imagined a video for this album. The old style mic was a nice touch and that Paris Boulevard feel that Bryan said he was keen to create was captured brilliantly. If anything from the new album does get on the video compilation it should be this. Thought it was funny to hear Bryan say of Cole Porter, as the video was winding up, that he was "all in all quite a clever bugger really". Great to see Bryan looking so relaxed these days. I really did fear for his future as a performer/ entertainer a few months ago. And one question: why does Bob Geldof continually appear on this type of programme and then blast it as a "load of bollocks". I would have said that he has nothing better to do but that would be slagging off two Irishmen in consecutive messages. Ah well I suppose he did say "brilliant", just as the Bryan clip was being introduced. The man has taste - the world never ceases to amaze me. Bryan was asked to choose a few records to play from his remastered back catalogue and picked Chance Meeting, Do the Strand (mentioning its lyric as something he was particularly pleased with), Street Life ("whereas this one was a bit of fun, as I recall"), and the excellent Bogus Man. He mentioned that the CDs sounded a lot better now, 15 years after CD technology was introduced. Despite Jools' predictable references to Bryan's impending arrival in a taxi (familiar to those who caught Will You Love Me Tomorrow on Jools' Later show) the programme was clearly recorded some weeks ago. It was apparently made in the same BBC studio that Roxy used when recording their first Peel sessions, which also included Chance Meeting, something that Bryan remembered while the song was playing and spoke about afterwards. Sweet & Lovely was, said Bryan, the only song he included on ATGB that was new to him when he put the album together. Jools' favourite from the new one seems to be Where or When, which he said he'd played the week before; this time, we heard Falling in Love Again and The Way You Look Tonight. Bryan's voice has changed but his radio manner is almost as it was 10 or 15 years ago, just a little more focused - programmes made in the mid-eighties caught him lost in his own thoughts, prone to drifting way away from the thread of the conversation. There was the obligatory discussion of possible Roxy reunions, Phil's playing on the new one, and the work with Eno over the last few years, Bryan also mentioned that he used to knock out the odd tenor sax part (presumably in the Gas Board) in pre-Roxy times. This is the only one of Bryan's TV and radio appearances this year that I've heard - good to hear those snorty laughs again. Thanks for the note, Alex. Man is this weird. It's called the John Lennon Artificial Intelligence Project. Talk to the world's first A.I. Beatle. http://www.triumphpc.com/john-lennon/ It kind of sucks but the blurb I read said, "...is only at the 'horse and buggy' stage. The Project's sophistication is likely to increase by orders of magnitude in the coming months. It is our sincere hope (and belief) that, as the robot's experience advances, a reasonable (and believable) facsimile of Lennon's personality will emerge." Please get me off this planet.
