We met him after a show in OKC. One of the young women in my group popped the "wanna go honky-tonkin" question, and his eyes lit up. Unfortunately, we were from out of town, too, and didn't know of any honky-tonks offhand. So he invited us back to the bar in his hotel, where we spent a few hours drinking beers and grilling him about everything we could think of. He was incredibly friendly. I'm not sure if the honky-tonk approach would work outside of the American heartland. Jim > > So Jim, you are saying that you actually went out honky-tonkin' with > Elvis Costello??? Okay folks here's my take on the Chicago concert. I have a longer version with my pre an post show observations that maybe Kiki might post on her site. Yes I was able to snap photos during the concert. I think I was the only one to get awy with it. My camera was almost confiscated at the end by security but my pleas as well as from thoese sitiing next to me saved the day. They are being developed now and I will send copies to Kiki for posting. I just hope they came out okay. I used a disposeable camera becuse it was small (natch) and can be easily slipped in past security. Hint, hint,hint.... Again for those who want to be surprised before he gets to your town, do not read any further. My descriptions are quite detailed. You have been warned..... The Concert It started the same way as the Washington D.C. opening and the others that followed with the harpist doing a solo followed by the string section. All blonde, they all came out in black halter tops and black leather pants. Not bad . There were more than a few whistles from the audience. There brief number was a tango which I recognized but could not rember the name of. No matter they were excellent. Next the rest of the band came out. Dressed in tuxedoes, they started with a swing number entitled Nightfall . I was very impressed how well they sounded together . I was also impressed at the sound mix in the Riviera. Well balanced with every instrument clearly distinguishable. This was a good sign. The band then segued into The Way You Look Tonight. It was like being at an intimate club. Then from stage left out glides Bryan to a standing ovation. He was smiling brodaly and clearly engulfing the adualtion that was being sent his way. He was dressed in a black dinner jacket, white shirt ,and black leather pants. There were stands of his famous hair covering his forehead. With all the controversy over the new haircut how he has aged, et. al., I could not tell what the fuss was all about. He looked cool, casual and oh yes-self assured. In my mind he had not aged that much at all. This was the closest that I had ever been at a Bryan concert and had a very good look at him. Maybe a line or two here and there but so what. He looked damn good period. The voice? Just like it was on ATGB. More nuanced and just the right amout of phrasing. A great opening and the audience loved it. These are the follwing numbers in sequence: 2. Love Me or Leave me . Sounded great. 3. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes-I was floored. Bryan made reference to this before he sang as being from an earler project that included some songs from the same era as ATBG. I had not heard this for a long time and I was taken away with the arrangement. Kudos to John Sutton on drums for this one. 4. Chance Meeting-This was at the top of my wish list. . The arrangement was similar to the Let's Stick Together remake. Nil Solberg, the guitarist, swithched over from the acoustic to electric on this one and added jus the right amount of distortion and fuzz. My mouth was open all the way thru this one. How could it get any better than this? Why was ther not more appalause on this one. A few of us stood up and applaued at the end of it. It was absolutely stunning! 5. Lover Come back to Me- A good choice to follow Chance Meeting. 6. Easy Living. Nothng special here but very fitting for the set. 7. Carrickfergus. Bryan stated that this was a sing about a man who was a long way from home. One of the guys sitting next to me was very glad the did that one. 8. I Can't Get Started-Don't remember where this came from, but it fit right into the mood. 9. Where or When-Byan was very much into this one. Nice backup from the band. 10. Bittersweet.-No. 2 on my wish list. Again my mouth was wide open thru the whole number. This one had a lot of personal references for me. Another stunner. Nice dramatic lighting in he background. Bryan sang every word, even the German part, with despair and longing. Wow! 11. Casanova.- The crowd got into this one. Smiles all around. 12. The Only Face- Bryan set at the piano for this one. Beautiful arrangement . A fab solo from the trumpet player Enrico Tomasso as he walked around the stage. 13. I'm Fer It Too. A band number. Bryan had left the stage for this one. The whole band swinged. The horns were on the mark. 14.Sunset- Bryan returns to the stage with the black waistcoat with the diamond buttons. I want that coat!. Another stunner. No. 3 on my wish list. It could have gone on a lot longer for me. Ths shadings in this song evolved the colors of a sunrise and a sunset. This floored one of the guys next to me. Me too! 15. September Song. I have a greater appreciation of this one with each listening. 16.You Do Something to Me. Another song that keeps growing on me. 17. Falling In Love Again. Forget Alfalfa ever sang this one. 18. Just One of Those Things.- Good-Bryan was almost campy in the delivery. 19.Avalon- Our theme song and the one where the crowd stood up. They KNEW this one. Two of the blondes, Rosie Wetters (cello) and Lucy Wilkins(violin) were singing background on this one. It's obvious that they were not even going to attempt the Yannick Entienne/Twaitha Agee part. Good that the did'nt. The audience was singing the Avalon part. Bryan was so caught up in the vibe that he almost forget to end it. A nod from Colin Good, the musical director got him bakc on track. 20. Jealous Guy- Women were heard sighing on this one. It tugged at a lot of emotions on this one. 21. Let's Stick Together- The crowd was way up for this one. I even heard some Jerri Hall type yelps from some members of the audience- and not from just women either!. Bryan played harmonica in the middle. It was the end of the set and the audience was begging for more. Encore 22. Do the Strand- Ahh people remember this one too. Bryan had hands on his hips and camping it up. Eskimoes are Chinese indeed...... Now what could follow this number..... 23. As Time Goes By- The concert closer and a bittersweet one at that. He just wanted to remind people that this was the inspiration for the whole thing and to send them home on a classy note. It worked. Oh yeah as a reminder for those who had not bought the cd to go out and get it. It was for sale in the lobby supposedly signed by Bryan himself. I was skeptical especially at $30 a pop. Jas A fabulous set . I guess for me that he only thing missing was I'm in the Mood for Love. I was ready for that one. Also he did not do Song for Europe which those two guys wanted to hear; would have fit in perfectly. Sorry Janeen that was not on the program and I have the set list to prove it. By the way, Kimberly and I looked for you. The song being left off the album was one of the reasons for there being lots of tension in the band after the albums release and during the tour which ultimately led to the band splitting in 1983. Whatever Gets You ThroughThe Night was recorded for a John Lennon tribute album which was never released. It was recorded around 19944-5 and was a project organised by Yoko Ono Regards John O'Brien - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #369 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
