After being at the jazz club, "Dino’s", for about an hour and listening to a nice mix of old jazz standards the band played the tune "Can’t Get Started With You" which Ferry covered beautifully during the NYC Beacon Theater show on the 5th of Nov. Needless to say that being back home from NYC and hearing the tune in a local jazz club brought a smile to my face and reminded me of just how great the NYC show was. Does any one have a recommendation on a good version of this song as I now have the tune stuck in my head. Again, Do not miss this tour!! This band, simply put, is fantastic. They handle the ATGB material flawlessly and sound remarkable live with great solos throughout the show. The Roxy & Ferry solo material also sounds fantastic. See http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicArtistsF/ferry_bryan.html An excerpt: Reflecting on the '30s Bryan Ferry is back with a cover album of romantic ballads from the '30s By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun It's somehow appropriate that Bryan Ferry's latest album is called As Time Goes By. Frankly, the clock has been loudly ticking away for fans of the tender-voiced, sartorially sophisticated ex-frontman of Roxy Music, the glam-turned-elegant-rock band of the '70s and '80s. Ferry, widely respected but not the most prolific of artists and with a long-standing reputation as a meticulous craftsman in the studio, released his last solo album, Mamouna, in 1994. Now Britain's most stylish rock star -- David Bowie excepted -- is back with a cover album of romantic ballads from the '30s, which includes I'm In The Mood For Love, Falling In Love Again and You Do Something To Me. It hits stores Tuesday, with a Nov. 9 date at Massey Hall to follow. For his part, the singer says it's not like he's been just sitting around twiddling his manicured thumbs since his last roadtrip for Mamouna. "At the end of it, I went back into the studio and I've been there ever since. They wouldn't let me out," says the 54-year-old singer with a chuckle during a recent interview in Toronto. "I've got my own place in London now, a studio, where I go to work every day, like a painter goes to his studio. It's terrific. It's an old industrial building, so I've got space for art work, and then a recording studio as well. I was mainly working on my new songs so I've got a lot of stuff that is in various stages of completion." Ferry is talking about a new album of original material to follow As Time Goes By, he hopes by next September. "I was working with (former Roxy Music member) Brian Eno and (Eurythmics) Dave Stewart and (Radiohead guitarist) Johnny Greenwood and Marcus Miller," he continues. "There's all sorts of things there, I mean, quite a lot of material, and I think I was writing too many songs really, so I got in a bit of a fluster and decided to do this album." Ferry admits he's established a pattern over the course of his almost three-decade solo career in that whenever he gets stuck on an album of original material he records an album of covers. "I was anxious to get something out," he says. "It bought me a bit of time. Not that I think it's like a second-division album or a B-list project for me, 'cause I really have always enjoyed an alternative career as an interpreter." In fact, he enjoyed As Time Goes By more than most. "Doing this has been a real treat, I must say," says Ferry. "As a singer it was obviously very nice to choose songs from the period where songwriting reached a real high, you know? I've always liked the songs from this period, as illustrated by the first solo album I did (1973's These Foolish Things). The title track was from that time. So I dabbled in the period before, but this is the first time I've done a complete record, a collection of stuff like that. And it's also the first time I've done an acoustic album, which was actually a great change from all the drum programming and computers and all the kinds of technology of the modern studio." For his latest tour then, Ferry plans on beefing up his band with a string quartet. "It'll be 12 people -- I hope it's not too big for Massey Hall," he says. "I suppose the ideal thing would have been The Cotton Club everywhere, if there was such a thing. That was the great thing about the '30s, you see. There were great places like that where the music would be performed. Not only was there that place in New York, there were Creole dancing girls and prohibition and danger and gangsters and it's quite interesting all that, really. It seems like just one great big party when you look back, of course, from here. Berlin, there was sort of the Berlin cabaret thing, transvestites and weirdos, that also has its own kind of exotic glamour from a distance. And Paris, there was a place where all kinds of high society people mixed with American artists, and all that kind of thing, so it has a lot of colour, that period." Dashing crooner Ferry, who exudes more university professor than dashing crooner in person (he's dressed in off-the-rack black jeans and rust-coloured tweed blazer mixed with custom-made brown suede shoes and beautiful lavender shirt), would not have liked to have been a singer back then, though. "Do you know what?" he says, leaning forward to make his point. "The male singers from that time sound weird." The women of the time stand out for him, especially Billie Holiday whom he says is his all-time favourite singer. "Listening to her doing some of this material was inspiration from when I was like a teenager, 'cause I was a big jazz fan when I was a young lad." It all sounds rather divine, especially to an atmosphere-loving creature like Ferry, who says he's slightly anxious about going on the road again. "I've done one or two tiny things and I've been very sort of apprehensive or nervous of doing them. Like charity things where you get up and sing one song, you know. But, after you've done it, you think, 'Oh, yeah, that's what I do.' So yeah, once you get up there, it all starts coming back to you. It would be nice if it was 50-50 -- in the studio and live -- but there's always been this kind of pressure to do new material all the time. And that's how you get kept away from your audience. It's a shame." - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 00:48:27 -0000 From: "Richard Swift" Subject: Re: [AVALON] RFH Photo Andy - They were there in July (some of the kids at least - not really kids anymore though!)
