Richard, first, you are correct that I am comfortable being known as someone who is frank and open, and I thank you (said quite sincerely) for your words, since I value honesty and clarity very much. In fact, it's the messages like that and which include some varioation of the phrase "but I don't always agree with you" which I value quite a lot. Second, I do appreciate the fact that there is home grown pride on this list. But I would also ask you to appreciate that it's not merely a question of geography. My criticism of the album or the fact I'm not bowled over by his rug (although Lucy had some marvelous clothes [and some witty hats] over the years) is not rooted in the fact I was born and live west of Greenwich. Nor is it not rooted in a genuine fondness for Mr. Ferry and his music. If he A particularly amusing statement since you know nothing about my class status. Which brings me to another point. I like discussion lists for the same reason I like teaching and academics and my friends and family--the opportunity to discuss all sorts of things, serious or not, with people who don't necessarily share my viewpoints. The truth is that most of my friends and family don't share a lot of my views, and you know what? That's fine with me. It's more interesting that way, and I enjoy a good discussion with someone who is passionate about something. Even, or perhaps especially, when we don't agree. In the end we just agree to disagree most of the time, and no harm is done. It's all done in fun. But once the discussion stops attacking my points and begins attacking me--when it moves from the impersonal to the personal--I tend to drop out since at that point there's no use in continuing since the discussion and disagreement has moved to argument. And that's not as much fun. > I don't have a clue how Ferry has done in the US but know he hasn't ever > been the star he was in the UK. At the risk of getting a email bashing from > the Americans on the list maybe some of you just don't quite realise how big > a deal this guy was in Europe. Then again maybe > you know exactly how big he was here. I don't know. He's basically unknown for the most part, except for "Love Is The Drug" and maybe "Jealous Guy." However I think it's fair to say that any American who has found his or her way to this list has a pretty good understanding of most of Ferry's career. I mean, give us a little credit. ;-) But why I don't understand is why people who don't even know Mr. Ferry--or any pop/rock star, since I've seen this on other music mailing lists--"worry" about things like this. I mean, I'd like for him to keep putting out records for a long time. But there is really nothing I can do beyond buying the album and supporting the tour--both of which I've done--and I can't see what getting all upset about Virgin is going to do. The fact of the matter is that Virgin is putting very little into the album because they don't expect much out of it. It's not going to make them a lot of money--even with a big push--so they've written it off. I mean, Ferry didn't even make it onto any late night talk shows here in the US, so we know that the publicity machine is being cut back. Why put lots of money into something which won't yield a return (and I can't imagine that this tour is making money for Virgin either)? And based on two things that have been posted to the list, it appears that they have no incentive to do so since this is Ferry's way of fulfilling his last contractual obligation to Virgin (why else would he say the new album of originals which seemed like it was pretty much in the can was going to come out next fall unless he had to shop for a new label?), so why should they make the effort? It's a business decision--not that we have to like it and not that Mr. Ferry doesn't deserve better, but it's not personal. Here's my recap of last night's show in Detroit. The show at the Opera House lived up to if not exceeded my expectations based on reviews posted from the other shows. I can't add much more to what has already been said other than I had a big smile on my face all night. I thought the acoustic arrangements brought a whole new dimension to some of the old songs. The treatments made it easy to find a common thread between old Ferry ("Sunset") and newer Ferry ("The Only Face.") I thought that was quite interesting since I've always viewed his work in two distinct ways - the more sonic treatments of late and the more rock and roll sounds of the earlier years. The crowd was fabulous. From where I was sitting it seemed everyone was a true fan. The energy level was great and indeed Ferry did seem to feed off of it. I have only seen him three times and this time was definitely the best all the way around. Highlights for me were "Casanova," "Bittersweet," and especially "Where or When." He seemed to put his whole body and soul into "Where or When," and the results were mesmerizing. I know this is a terribly starry eyed review, but I honestly have no complaints about the performance other than it was over too soon. Even my husband, who is not a huge fan, truly enjoyed it. But fun.) Only the other day, The Team at Expression asked: "Is anybody out there". Must have been a slow day. They also asked about the demand for B-Sides for the Roxy Dream Concert Survey. The link with Kicki's site is great as one get to the Manzanera site more quickly. Stopping at the Avalaon site to have a look at all the photos, I noticed Monquiboy?? No offence, but my God, it's appalling. No. is Riff CD002. I had ordered this some Months ago, at the same time as ordering all the RM/Bry re-masters, and this is the last item to come through. Got it from Key Mail Order (they are on the Net at www.keymailorder.com ) By the way, afficianados, is the 'proper' 7" version of Eno's 'Seven Deadly Fins' available on a CD anywhere ? (not that damn awful remix that appeared recently on the 'Glam' double CD). I had heard it was on a Box Set - though I don't want to buy the Box just to get the track on CD. My orig. Vinyl single is starting to wear out ! I wish they'd added the original to the 'Jets' CD... Johnny Reece...
