A lot of bands and artists shit themselves going to Glasgow for the first time in anticipation of there acceptance. I have an interview with Bryan among others about Glasgow Appollo (Check your Viva! & High Road sleeve) he said that it had one of the dingiest filthy damp dressing rooms and backstage areas, but as soon as you walked on stage you the crowd made you feel like a king in a palace. I have a live recording of the complete show that High Road EP was recorded at in Glasgow. Bryan says in between one of the songs, "I told them you were a great audience." He wasn't just paying lip service, look at his official live releases. Viva!, The High Road EP & The Archive And Live Collection were all recorded in Glasgow, so was part of Heart Still Beating, though not credited on the sleeve, so maybe all I have just written is not all my own Scottish bias. regarrds John Mrs Doubtfire Mc Brien - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Nov 1999 09:20:57 +0000 From: "Simon Galloway" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Angel Eyes Rod, I bought this the other day, and it is the original album version, not the poppy version. At about 10:45 a stage hand appeared and said he would allow five people into the building at a time to meet the man! Such a class act from Bryan. We were among the first to get in. I expected to have to walk to some room to meet him, but as I entered and turned he was standing right in front of me! And then the cat bit my tongue - all I could manage was to give him my remastered RM to sign and thank him. My girlfriend faired a little better and exchanged a few words and got her concert program signed. Bryan was in a good mood and looked smooth in his rust/orange wool jacket and scarf. As we were leaving we noticed a clear plastic bag full of towels monogrammed "BF" - we thought about it for a second but decided not to. Sh!t - should have brought a camera. I was unfortunately very close to the doors and heard them slam constantly...although it did seem to me to get less frequent once Bryan hit the stage! I think that "Where or When" was probably the most touching performance of the evening. I was also quite amazed (and my partner agreed with me) on how few people actually knew any of the old solo and RM material he did. For example, almost no one applauded for Smoke Gets in Your Eyes until the first time the title is sung in the song...My lover, who is not the world's biggest RM fan knew the song from the get go..despite the different arrangement. He was also very pleasantly surprised by the concert and how good BF and the orchestra were! I would have to say that the highlights of the evening for me though were when Bryan actually reacted to the calls from the audience for Do the Strand..(an attempt to suppress a smile followed by "be patient") and when someone yelled "we missed you Bryan", he replied "I missed you too" in a very off the cuff sincere tone. Nice to see that he actually could hear the audience from up there! All in all an amazing concert! I have set myself a deadline of December 14, the day of the London date, to complete this project. On that day I'll hand out UK style VHS copies to Avalonions attending the Royal Festival Hall gig. I shall - same day - take orders from anyone who wants a copy anywhere in our Roxy universe. On the format that suits you.... All in time for the end of milleneum circus. I'm afraid it won't be too polished but you'll find many pearls amongst the swine. Time/Money/Opportunity constraints have bedevilled this project, as I have documented, and I reiterate my apologies to those who lent their tapes and those who have waited for so long. I'll do some work on how much the cost of mailing and blank tapes are. I doubt it'll be more than 20 bucks / 12 quid / 15,000,000 roubles. For new listmembers here's a breakdown of the contents ... To recap : Last winter Gareth McGinley started noting down the Television appearances of Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. We all mailed in detailing what we had taped off the crystal bucket. I then suggested that we put together a compilation of material not previously on a Videotape and I offered to do it. The brief was to include any TV material not previously shown on authorised videos (eg High Road, Total recall etc ..) The tapes duly arrived at my flat. Months went by. I put all the non-UK compatible material on to VHS so I could see what we've got. I watched all 50 hours of material. Mostly interviews with a bored Bry interspersed with clips of readily available promos. Some nuggets emerged from the murky water. It became clear that I could easily fill a 3 hour tape with fantastic live performances, amusing soundbites and other Roxy related TV curios. I then borrowed studio time from a London TV "Lab" to put the assorted pieces together on DVCAM. It took time. Twice I travelled to their South London studios to find the engineers helping me had gone home early. A few points : The recent debate on the list about the merits of the Live Aid performance threw up the fact that US based Avalonions may not have seen the flawed yet amazing performance of "Sensation" and "Boys and Girls." Both are included here, preceded by an interesting reflection on the event by Bryan. The list of material is as follows : 0-1.5 Bry as chauffeur (Tube) 1.5-6.5 Kiss and Tell live in Saturday Night Live 6.5-14 Thrill of it all, Roxy live in Dortmund (81?) 14-16.5 The Only One, vocal + piano, Mamouna promo 16.5-17 Bry + Melanie Griffiths giving an award in the States 17-20.5 Slave to Love at Live Aid ( may delete this as I forgot that it's on Total Recall.) 20.5-27.5 Mother of Pearl live on Musikladen 27.5-31.5 Amazona live at Musikladen 31.5-37.5 Bry Big Breakfast interview with Paula Yates, v flirty 37.5-44.5 Australian interview (Suzanne Dowling) lots about Bry childhood 44.5-47.5 This is Tomorrow promo 47.5-57.5 More from Mamouna promo video, Interviews with all the musicians 57.5-61 Both Ends Burning live at Wembley 61-64.5 Explorers Lorelei video 64.5-81.5 Old Grey Whistle Test special 1987, includes promos of Avalon, Sign of the times and live Do The Strand on whistle Test 1973 81.5-85.5 Bry on Alan Partridge 1999 85.5-92.5 Song for Europe, Granada TV "On the road", 1982 ? (I know one or two Avalonions have this video, but I included it because its pretty rare and quite brilliant) 92.5-101.5 Anthony Price interview, then Bry miming to Boys and Girls, Tube 1987 ? 101.5-103.5 Eno, (-) Kings hat 103.5-106.5 Bry on Leno performing Spell on you, Trower on guitar, then sweaty interview 106.5- 113 Live Ladytron on Old Grey Whistle Test (73?) 113-116.5 Spell on You on Top of the Pops, good live vocals, hunched at piano. 116.5-117.5 USA VH1 interview with BF talking about the Shirelles 117.5-121 Will you still love me Live on Later accompanied by Hubbard. A personal favourite. 121-125 Dreamhome on Tube, 1982, album track with photos from Casa Vogue. V.cool. 125-144 The legendary episode of French soap Hotel Bouque with BF playing himself on tour with le group Roxy Musique in Paris tour hotel. Bry gets off with the patron's wife and reflects upon how he used to take himself too seriously. "And now ?" "Others take me too seriously." !!! This was a 50 minute show that I've edited down to 20 minutes. I make no apologies to the screenwriters. 144-146 Interview with Richard Skinner discussing Live Aid 146-155 Live Aid Sensation and Boys and Girls 155-163 Walking along Northumbrian coast with Jools Holland discussing musical influences. 163-167 Promo of Mamouna, the track. Makes a great ending. To be inserted .. Documentary on Richard Hamilton, with fab childhood and university stills, "Your Painted Smile" live concert footage from bootleg vid of Mamouna Tour. I was wondering if someone could help me design the cover. I thought we could use one or two of these fantastic new pictures from Jock O'Brien's famous (Stalker) collection ! Mail me privately if you want to co-ordinate this with me. Who else will be there? I've also run into a colleague at work who's a big Roxy fan; he wants me to ask if Andy's solo albums, such as Resolving Contradictions, are on CD, and where to buy them. Can anybody help? Bye bye NA ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
