Has anyone got the credits for it. Is that Bryan on piano? I've always thought that he seriously underestimates himself as a pianist. Perhaps not the way in which a true conisseur would appreciate but this is a truly beautiful track. He's got a great ear for rhythmn. Martin made the point in London recently that when his mates are slagging Ferry off he always sticks on the instrumental version of Windswept, until their saying "Who's that then, sounds really good". Aha called your bluff ya blind bastard. BF has produced some fabulous instrumental tracks. The early Roxy flip sides allow for some magic improvisation, Tara and India deserve the much used and abused term "beautiful" and Nocturne, Valentine, and Because Your Mine are excellent mood pieces. This is why I never worry too much about Ferry running out of time. There'd be plenty of stuff like this for him if he does eventually lose his voice. Gareth p.s. A massive thanks to John O Brien who sent me these b-sides over the summer - I owe you 30 pints of Caffreys and I've no doubt you'll down every one of them before the Glasgow gig even starts. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 21:13:12 -0000 From: "Richard Swift" Subject: [AVALON] Re: FYP mirror Mine's on the landing wall - I bought it with my very first month's salary (£80) back in August 1977 and it's always hung somewhere at home since. On the plastic sleeve was a sticker that said "Made In Canada". Then on the outside of the jacket is a Japanese 3/4" sleeve that says on the back "Printed in the EU". However upon further inspection on the CD itself it says "Made in the EU" on the label side that is a replica of a album(black with grooves). Hope this helps. It seems kinda misleading with the Japanese text on the border sleeve. I can't in no way imagine Bryan doing the cheesy new age thing- his style has much more individuality than that. I am a big fan of David Sylvian and I remember how much I loved "Secrets of the Beehive." A year later he released a new album and it was an album of two long ambient pieces. I didn't know what to think as I always thought of Sylvian as a phenomenal vocalist (first) and a great keyboard player (second). And then the next year he releases another ambient album and I'm thinking that indeed he may have lost his voice. He even releases one more ambient album a year later! It wasn't until 6 years after "Secrets.." that he releases another vocal album. BUT, the instrumental stuff really grew on me. And I consider his ambient works to be as important as his vocal works (heresy as it may be). OK, first the most important elements: the new haircut is just OK. The outfit consists of those black leather pants, a white shirt, and a tuxedo jacket, open at the neck, later replaced with a frock coat with a velvet collar and rhinestone buttons. And yes, there are indeed Sirens on this tour. But more on them later. Now some of you may be aware that I have cast a rather jaundiced eye over this whole 30s project, and so I was afraid that this night was going to be Godawful. So many things could be just *wrong*, and it could have been a freak show waiting to happen. I know I'm not worthy to be a Ferry fan because I refuse to toe the line and believe that he can do no wrong and because I believe that he can be criticized, yadda yadda yadda (but you know, as the old story says, "A cat may look at a king"), and it seems to me that the live component of this project had lots of trap doors. What if Ferry can't sing? What if he really has lost his confidence? What if it just sounds stupid for a string quartet to play "Do The Strand?" The show began with the Heather Graham lookalike harpist coming out on stage and playing a few pieces. Trust me, with her long blonde hair and pierced belly button, she got everyone's attention. She exited and the string quartet, four gorgeous blondes, took the stage. They played one piece, but technical problems with the cello meant they relinquished their attempt at a second piece in favor of getting on with the show. Wise move (as my escort said "they were clearly chosen in part for their looks, because they ain't no string quartet"), but I have to say that this was a very amusing way to set the show in motion. I never keep setlists at shows since I can't be bothered to stop and write this stuff down while I'm having a good time, and I usually have a pretty good memory. Unfortunately most of the songs on the new album sound a lot alike to me, and for the life of me I cannot remember what the first song was. I do indeed feel duly embarrassed, but life goes on. But the truth is that Ferry didn't get into his groove until midway through the third song (also one of the new ones, and I can't remember what it was either). However once he shed his nervousness he was lit from within for the rest of the night. The fourth song was "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," and when that was followed by "Chance Meeting," I realized I was smiling as much as Ferry was. It was infectious--his joy in being on stage again, and the crowd's joy in having him there was contagious. No doubt the small club which allowed everyone a good view of him and vice versa played a large role in that. I wish I could convey to you all the sheer delight that was present in that room--it was tangible, and even the band (pianist, horn section, drummer, 2 guitarists [including a (literally) last minute bass/bass guitar player], harpist/percussionist, string quartet) seemed surprised to see it. I am sure the show is going to tighten up considerably over the next few weeks and months, but I gotta tell you guys that I'd take tonight with its sheer enthusiasm and joy and Ferry's relief to more inspired solos or tweaked arrangements. The combination of it being opening night and a small club was spectacular. The set list was most of the new album and (from what I can remember) Do The Strand Avalon Jealous Guy Carrickfergus Let's Stick Together Chance Meeting Bittersweet Sunset The Only Face (with Ferry on piano--haunting) Casanova I Can't Get Started With You There might have been one or two others that I can't remember. The highlights: *Ferry sounded great. Really. No need for the Yanni route. A few tiny misses here and there, but as my friend (who'd never seen him before and was completely in awe) said: "He's still got it." And he does. Strong and clear. And although he didn't say much to us, he was completely charming and clearly touched by the response. At one point a male voice was heard from the small balcony: "You're still beautiful, Bryan." The look on his face and the smile that went along with it was worth the price of admission. *The harpist and string quartet playing the Sirens for the last encore, on their feet playing their instruments and singing backup (seeming a bit embarrassed at first, but then getting into it). *Ferry at the piano singing "The Only Face." *A somewhat joyful rendition of "September Song." *I know it's cheesy, but "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." *And a truly radiant version of "Where Or When," a song I had already fallen competely in love with, where even Ferry seemed to vanish into its loveliness and yearning during the bridge. There are probably a few more things I can't remember, but I'm no longer feeling so keyed up and I need to remove the rest of the glitter from my eye before I fall asleep, so they can wait until morning.
