So, any guesses as to what these "favorites" will be? >> I think he will have to shore up this set with the better known hits like Slave, Jealous,Let's Stick, Dance Away, Love Is The Drug etc, though I don't really want to hear any of these again. The 30's stuff is not the most immediate stuff for any new listener at the show so more than ever Bryan would have to do these songs. Some of them might not lend themselves to a 13 piece jazz orchestra, The Ferry originals that could be done with this setting could be:- Sunset, When She Walks in the room, but maybe these are too obvious. I have studied the chord patterns of a lot of the Ferry/Roxy originals to see what lends itself to being remade and remodeled into a Jazz band type song. Bryan my cover some of his own songs with as big a departure as he covers other peoples songs. Chance Meeting has a really jazzy chord pattern, if he sung this with a legato vocal instead of the staccatto one he has on record, then this could sit with where or when. The chord pattern is screaming for the type of piano playing throughout ATGB. Just Like You is another song waiting for this type of arrangement. A Really Good Time would be tremendous done in this setting. The line "...and listen to me..." is the most frightening line I have heard Ferry sing. He sounds as if he new you were heading through to the fridge for another beer. True To Life has nice Jazz chords and with the right arrangement would be just a treat Ain't That So has that very open sleazy feel to it that a lot of jazz numbers do. Widswept has a lovely four bar chord pattern that just keeps repeating, Bryan could do one cracker of an arrangement of this one with this band A version of As The World Turns with a middle 8 break that would be more in line with the mood of the song than the ear bleading Frippertonics on the recorded version. Bete Noire or is that too obvious. The Only Face has already proved to be an excellent acoustic song on the Documentary video promo. These Foolish Things, You Go To My Head & Smoke Gets In Your Eyes have probably been penciled in on the list of possibles at one time, whether he has rubbed them out or know we will have to see. My guess is :- Slave To Love, These Foolish Things. And I'm not sure why you think he'd limit it to 8-10 rather than the entire thing... there's quite a bit of time to fill (or so I'd expect at these ticket prices). I believe it's already been culled, but Beauty Queen would seem to lend itself wonderfully to an acoustic arrangement. I remain undecided on 2HB, so logical an era-related choice that it almost certainly won't be. At the risk of following in Sybil Fawlty's footsteps, would it be in order to remind all UK list members about the single's release on Monday and to implore you all to buy a copy this week, preferably from a 'chart return' shop - I think we all have a shrewd idea who they are (one of the biggest is Woolworths but since they probably won't sell it anyway the shop with a gramaphone - listening hound seems an obvious choice). Other artistes have well mobilised fans who know exactly where and when to buy releases to secure chart success and whilst we are relatively small in number I think this is something we should consider. It simply won't do to buy the single the week after it's released because - on recent form - it could be finished by then (especially since the vast majority of singles have even shorter life spans than they did when Bryan last released a single in the UK). The single is receiving some airplay and some favourable reviews (BBC Ceefax for example), but in the light of apathy amongst some retailers and a less than committed record company, the airplay is only likely to continue if a reasonable chart position is achieved. Let's see if, together, we can make a small difference! I have now finished wading through all 398 messages that have been posted in the last week - never again will I go on holiday at a time when BF releases a new album! Anyway it's good to be back and to read what people think about ATGB. On the whole it seems to me this is meeting with a very favourable response on the list but reviews far more favourable than of late in the media - just about everyone seems to be giving it a 'thumbs up' in the press or actually enthusing about it - it's been some years since a Ferry album was so warmly received (although some of the heavyweight music press are yet to give their verdicts!!). I have listened to the album a few times whilst on holiday but only via a personal CD player connected up to my car stereo. I want to give it a thorough listen at home before expressing my views about it but suffice to say at this stage that I love this album. I think someone amongst those 398 messages described it as "charming" and whilst I never thought this would be a term I'd use for an entire BF album (the odd track maybe) - I see nothing wrong with that for an album of this kind. Bryan has, I think, pulled off something pretty impressive here. The arrangements are beautiful and the singing a delight - yes I think the style is deliberate too - I would guess that this is the 'natural' voice Bryan has now - the voice perhaps first revealed in "As The World Turns" but which has developed over the intervening 22 years into what we hear today. I'm sure he can still deliver a stronger voice when required to do so but there's no real place for that on this collection of songs. I hope the album does well but I share some of the concerns expressed on the list about how this album is being marketted. As far as I could see when I was away it isn't being sold at all in Woolworths. Whilst I love good quality record stores, there's no getting away from the fact that the likes of Woolworths in the UK have enormous clout in the music marketplace - I may be wrong but I think they are actually the biggest music retailer in the UK - ahead of (separately) Virgin and HMV. I read an article recently in Music Week that said that unless you can get sales through the likes of Woolworths, Asda and Tesco, you can forget massive selling albums and clearly this is a reflection of the changing ways many people buy their music now - they pick up the CDs they want with their weekly shop at Asda and Tesco rather than visiting conventional retailers. Perhaps Woolworths will come on board if the album proves to be a good seller elsewhere but it's a Catch 22 situation since good sales elsewhere won't be reflected in an outstanding chart debut later today without Woolworths et al. Have any UK list members seen the album for sale in the likes of Asda? If not then here we have another classic example (if not the best example yet) of Bryan being very badly let down by Virgin. Whilst I guess we should be grateful to Virgin Germany without whom we feasibly may never have seen the album, it seems to me the sooner Bryan cuts his ties with Virgin altogether and gets a deal with someone who knows how to promote their artises the better we will all be for it. Six done brilliantly would be better than 10 or 12 thrown in just because the audience might expect them. Just my opinion.
