And you're right that he's been closely miked before, and the results were different. But that doesn't mean the performances he gives on ATGB are the only performances he's capable of giving. As for his voice lasting : He has the advantage of never having had much of a voice anyway. The quality has changed somewhat, but it's not actually WORSE than the voice on FOR YOUR PLEASURE. You sing yourself, Kicki, and you know that the room for decline in his voice isn't like that of (say) Pavarotti or Ella Fitzgerald. ( I like Ella's seventies recordings on the Pablo label more than her fifties work, actually, but that's another discussion.) Also, missing notes is not new for Ferry - he does it all the time in live performances. This is the nearest he's ever done to a 'live' studio recording, and his voice is more prominent here than it's been in twenty or more years, so of course it shows up his weaknesses more markedly. I like the fact that he doesn't seem to have done too much tidying up after the four days of recording. It's also worth adding that these songs are more difficult to sing than anything he's tried before. THESE FOOLISH THINGS is heavily simplified in his version, and so is YOU GO TO MY HEAD, and SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES for that matter. I don't think Ferry in the Seventies would have been capable of making this new album . We all admire the way he reconstructs songs, but the truth is that he can hide his limitations through such reconstructions. I don't think he could have got through his early standards performances WITHOUT remaking the songs. Now he has found a way, albeit a quirky and mannered way, of pursuing the song-writers' original intentions. He doesn't go for them and miss them he just doesn't go for them on ATGB. But if he's lost it it must have been recently because that Princess Diana tribute , which was fairly recent, was a tremendous vocal. Clear, crisp and in tune. With some real high notes sung beautifully. Each to their own opinion certainly but I have a bit surprised by the critcism of Bryans voice from several quarters on this list. His Netaid performance was terrific I thought and the idea that he has usually gone on TV / stage and sang perfectly is an odd one. In fact I have the Live Aid tapes from 1985 and I think he's more rounded now. The Jools Holland appearence was another where his voice sounded really accurate. I mean, listen to early Roxy Music live stuff and tell me he sang in tune ! So whilst I don't for one minute expect him to sound the same at 54 as 30 that doesn't necessarily mean he did ATGB vocals in a laid back fashion because he wasn't capable of doing anything else. I know Ferry is closely miked, but he's been that serveral times before with different result: Sunset and Bitter-Sweet for instance. A person's voice isn't a static thing that can avoid change. Ferry is now 54 years old, and that is beginning to show in his voice - that is not an opinion but a fact. Can anyone seriously believe that the man would sound exactly the same now as when he was 28-30?? Whether his voice is better or worse than before can of course be a matter of opinion. I think he's slipping - listen to his top notes! Some songs on ATGB are definetely in the wrong key for Ferry. Ferry himself has said that he doesn't think his voice will last. However, for this reason I hate, hate , hate to say it but ATGB, for me, is the dullest album BF has ever released. Not because it's a poor effort (it's a very, very competent effort) but because it clings to one period in time. At least on other covers albums there was something for everybody. How could you possibly put These Foolish Things and Sympathy For The Devil on the same album?? But that's the thing, it really worked. The variety was not only in the songs themselves but in the voice and the instrumentation also. Ferry's voice is in good form on ATGB and the playing going on around him is top notch. But the album could easily be condensed down to 4 songs and you'd still get the same message. He could have put out an EP (ala Lets Stick Together)with Easy Living, I'm in the Mood.., Where or When and Sweet and Lovely and people would have been on their knees pleading for more. As it is the album outstays its welcome and is very hard to stick with for a full listen. I have no doubt that some people will love it (rightly so) and this piece will probably fit nicely into the BF discography when everything is done and dusted, but it's just not for me. So, so sorry. What I wanted to say was that there was a website with a discography that I've bookmarked in the past but now it brings me to another page. Megafunkiness... or something like that. Just plain text, but very accurate and much information about bootlegs. www.castrop-rauxel.netsurf.de/homepages/j.delmere/roxy/roxy1.htm is my bookmark. Anyone recognise this? The Royal Festival Hall, with its arty little bookshop, open ground floor exhibitions and very relaxed bar area, is a gathering place for would-be Bohemians of all sorts, so don't worry too much about dress code. Our man's confidence seems none too high these days, so don't talk too loudly through the quiet bits. And no chanting "Eno".
