I`ll never be able to listen to VU without thinking of my cousin, Mae. Although I was too young (10 in '68) to understand what they were all about, Mae (7 years older than me) and her boyfriend were heavily into them and just about anything dark and bitter. She was forever going on about them and when baby-sitting us, she`d often traumatize my friends and I with her interpretive dances to Black Angel`s Death Song or Lady Godiva`s Operation. It wasn`t until my teens in the '70`s that I was old enough to understand and appreciate them but by then, well, Sister Ray and Heroin seemed kind of tame. Mae was a great lady and she taught me to look beyond the radio for the really good music, which of course is how I discovered Roxy, among others. She died of cancer in '95. The point is I always find you have to know Ferrys songs before you appreciate their brilliance. Your Painted Smile didn't initially strike me as anything spectacular but I would now rather listen to that than anything else on Mamouna - it's as perfect as music gets in a vague way. I disagree with the person who said he'd bought into the image thing with no distance or irony- Ferry makes beauty out of nothing. Your Painted Smile is a hairs breadth from being nothing (I mean is that REALLY a song?) but fills two minutes plus with something so NOTHING that at the end you are not sure you've even heard it. Or am I just pissed ? I 'm off to listen to ATGB again. The question is 1) Am I going to like this because it's a really good record by my favourite artist ? Or that that is the ONLY thing we can appreciate?? How elitist and snobbish. Like I said before.... I think it is fair game to rag on the artist, but to rag on the fans, saying, in essence, that we are idiots weaned on cartoons is ridiculous. Eric Gregory, That may be true, they (RM) may not exist without VU....but I still found them, as I said before, tiresome....like they were trying so hard to be oh-so-artsy. My beef was with the notion put forth by Heather that the only people who dig certain music must only be capable of enjoying cartoon fare... I wish I was artistic...but alas, I can only consume and appreciate art. Was she an artist or a dancer? No, just an average, straight laced teen (not a hippy) who eventually became a nurse, of all things. But she loved alternative music (for lack of a better term) and the more off the wall, the better. She could play VU, then slap on Johnny Cash, then Jeannie C. Riley (Harper Valley P.T.A.) then Zappa. And she had a marvelous dry sense of humor and knew how to crack me up. We were sitting in her room one day listening to her newest acquisitions when my sister (2 years younger than me) came up with a Tommy Roe 45 of "Dizzy". Mae put it on, we listened to it and when it was over, she calmly announced, "I think it`s broken, here, let me fix it." Then she snapped it in two and tossed it under her bed. "There, doesn`t that sound better?" My sister freaked and I`ve laughed for 30 years. >> BTW, I always thought Venus in Furs was kind of sexy. >> >Me too! It's written about Edie Sedgewick, the famous East Coast debutante >who was ruined by the Warhol scene. I didn`t know that. I just figured it was a sort of homage to Masoch`s book. I can't express in words how I feel when i listen to his music (and roxy), and watch his videos. I will not say much more on this because I can get fanatical, and start sounding too "groupie". Bottom line: I find him soooo sexy, and that has been my opinion for 22 years, since I first laid eyes on him, and listened to his music. :) Heidi - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 01:00:21 -0400 From: "tfagan" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: No Songs For Europe/Oberon/socks/ATGB/perfume.
