Hi Noam, and all... Came home 'empty-handed' Vinyl wise on the ATGB front, despite the recent Bry interviews claiming it was to be released on that format too. Disaster ! According to the slave at Virgin Megastore (sorry, I'm not a fan of supermarket type Record Shops) he said there are "no dates scheduled" for a Vinyl release. Sorry Noam, it ain't lookin' good. Having said that, it was at least a month after the Mamouna CD came out when I first spotted the Vinyl - similar thing with 'Taxi' too - and can only hope the same is true. I'll investigate further and let you know if I get any success. Could be that they're keeping it under wraps to ensure more profit by getting the regulars to all get the CD first - as they make so much more profit over here from CDs than Vinyl. But I'm on the case ! Interesting thoughts you had on ATGB - almost the opposite happened to me, as on first play, (hate to admit this) I was horrified. Put it on again last night and liked it a little more. Obviously, this is going to be a tough one to call - I'd better give my thoughts after a few months - though I have no doubt seeing the Gigs will have a good effect on most peoples reactions to the Album. Time will tell, as I was so unsure over 'Mamouna' (completely different to ATGB I know ) at first, and it ends up being my favourite solo work of Bry. Still, his own songs rule the roost for me though. Looking forward very much to hearing the 'Live' reviews from you all shortly... Well, it seems I am coming down on the 'poor album' side of the argument. I thought I could just about stomach any musical outpourings El Ferranti produced, esp. after 'Dance With Life' but this takes the biscuit. At least he hasn't processed the backing tracks like that one he did for the Noel Coward tribute album. Maybe that was where the whole 30's thing started? I am already looking forward to the 'original' material in late 2000 and clinging to it like a life raft. I don't think this ATGB album was a very clever move - much as he wanted to do it, I can't see many people buying it and being satisfied with it. They'll see Bryan Ferry on the label and think they'll know what they are buying and then be most disappointed with what comes out of the CD player. The only track that comes near the rich aural soundscapes we know and love is track 4, 'I'm In The Mood For Love', which also happens to be the track with Phil Manzie on guitar and another 'blast-from-the-past', Andy Newmark on drums. Seems to me if Bryan can get the right band around him he can still drag out some semblance of 'decent' music. So we have to indulge his 30's trip and hope to blazes that the 'original' album late 2000 will restore our faith!! The ever present work in progress, the continual amibiguity about sexual preferences..... The NME always used to label Bryan "The Lawrence Harvey of Pop" I always thought more Christopher Lee meets Dirk myself. In fact, I find very little of Ferry's music "sexy," and never have. But that's not what makes them my all-time favorite group. To me, his best material is interesting in the same way 1970's glamour photography (Helmut Newton, Guy Boudin), the disco scene, or Warhol drag queens are. It is campy, trashy, and yes, maybe a little repulsive in it's cliched singles-scene imagery. But there was always a paradoxical distance between the imagery that he created with his lyrics, and the way he presented these images. He would sing a line such as "Dim the lights, you can guess the rest," but so ironically, that he always managed to point out the emptiness in such one-liners. That is what has always made his music my favorite, his ability to come so very close to the mythology of commercialized romance, yet to keep enough distance to be critical of it. Now, in songs such as "YPS," it seems like Ferry has bought into the myth. He delivers the cheesy one-liners without the least bit of irony. The songs are smooth and sincere, perfectly appropriate for the smooth jazz lounges in the financial district of San Francisco, or maybe a TV commercial. And Will, I checked my pulse, and I still do not get turned on by commercials. Heather I love Roxy Music, but not because I find them sexy. There are lots of songs that I do find sexy - I would say, anything by Pulp, "From Her to Eternity" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, "The Hairstyle of the Devil" by Momus, "Je "T'aime, Moi Non Plus," by Serge Gainsbourg, or "Toiler on the Sea" by the Stranglers, to name a few. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 09:42:26 -0700 From: "Dawne A. I'm-too-sexy-for-my-shirt, Dawne And Heather, you put yourself out there, so I can't resist: raggin' on some pretty good music (I never say the Forbiden Zone, by th Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, headed by Danny's bro).....yet you enjoy the Velvet Underground? I find that stuff tiresome, boring. Some elitist group of artists cranking out noise..... At least Boingo and the band had serious talent with instruments and vocals, just look at the instruments they played (marinmbas from Guatemala, trombones, trumpets...etc.) and their unmatched versatility. I feel that the metal scene was over-rated in LA in the 80's,,,, sure it was Fun, but please...all these guys had were bitched out hair and knew a few guitar chords... I was constantly Behind the Scenes in those days, having boyfriends in the Biz who ran sound stages and ran rentals out of SIR in Holloweird...and these guys were as bubbled-headed as the chicks they'd take home. Furthermore, I spent 15 hours on an Oingo Boingo set, I found Danny to be bright, witty, incredibly intelligent and a man with a lot of depth...rare for the music scene...oh, and the next night was at the Hallween concert, backstage. You know, I don't mind differing opinions, but the whole Insult thing is really a drag. I don't make fun of someone just b/.c they like the Velvet Underground....I don't make assertions that they grew up only watching Disney and cartoons b/c they like Danny. I rather insult the artists than their fans.... I say fine, dig it, but don't shove it down my throat...and think of a better way to get your opinion across without insulting people. You are smart enough to do so, I know it. And btw, Heather, when the baby comes you are gonna be around a lot of Disney...and you might enjoy it..some of it is really quite Masterful...I hope you can manage to let go of some of that Tortured Communist Artist attitude and perhaps try and find some qualities in stuff you have evidently rejected....Your life is aabout to change, big time...relax and don't be so serious. Avalonia will not be surprised to learn that when Taxi was released I didn't own a CD player and I was delighted to purchase the vinyl on day 1. The larger canvas showed off what I consider to be Bryan's finest solo cover. As the good Doctor Puxley might reflect, you can't beat a diamond drawn 'cross vulcanite. Martini PS I think "I'm in the mood for love" and "Where or When" are up there with some of his finest work. - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 21:03:10 +0200 From: "Han Snijders en Willy v/d Geest" Subject: [AVALON] Re: No Songs For Europe/Oberon/socks/ATGB/perfume. How is it possible that Oberon a few days ago gives the dates and places for Germany? Oberon Tell us. BTW I love his new album and although I can imagine that some of you don't like sweet and lovely o.k. but not liking Where or When... unbelievable The last interview I read he was wearing Yellow socks. Opium (for women) was so overused in the eighties and so common that it became tacky, methinks. Guerlain, on the other hand, can never be anything but stylish. Shalimar, Samsara, L'Heure Bleu... I have no idea what kind of scent Ferry uses. I bet some lesser known label designed exclusively for the rich and famous. /Kicki G - today with Estée Lauder's Private Collection - ------------------------ Kicki Gustafsson, Östersunds-Posten 063-16 16 51 http://www.op.se http://www.torget.se/users/k/KickiG (privat hemsida) - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V4 #331 **************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
