Hi Noam, as far as I know ATGB is due on Vinyl (at BF's insistence ?). I'll be trying to pick up both CD and Vinyl in a few hours. Where are you by the way - in the UK , USA, elsewhere in Europe ?. Virgin stores should carry both formats. If you have trouble picking a Vinyl copy up then let me know, as I can always get an extra one and post it on... Nice to hear your local Record store has RM as an example ! Vladmimir Tatlin and the Monument to the Third International? El Lissitsky and Alexander Rodchenko? And what about Kasimir Malevich? The poetry of Mayakovsky? Not to mention the great filmakers, Dziga Vertov, Eisenstein Tarkovsky (I highly recommend "Solaris," or "The Man With the Movie Camera" to anyone). Of course, my husband is a mathematician from Denmark (a social democracy) and has noticed that most of the college math courses and comperable to what he had in high school. The Russian mathematicians were the best in his class at the University of Chicago. Now many Russians are here, that's true, but after Russia abandoned socialism for capitalism, even this society looks responsible in comparison. He set up a "factory" in downtown Manhattan where he churned out artistic works using industrial image-making methods and trashy, pop cultural imagery. He drew his inspiration walking around in the downtown garment and jewelry districts and seeing the excesses. He had a whole stable of "movie stars" which he exploited in what was one of the most interesting and subversive responses to the industrialized Hollywood film culture. None of this could have been done without capitalism. And furthermore, this oppressive Capitalist nation of ours gave us Thomas Edison...Elvis Presley, Hollywood and Motion Pictures, Jazz, Blues, Rock'n'Roll and a host of nobel prize recipients...the lists is endless.... Well, speaking directly to communism...it couldn't have been. The USSR and its satellites had direct cultural policies banning music with lyrical content such as the VU's, and also banning music using discordant themes and other Western musical experimentalism. Even had a name for it-- formalism. A previous poster referred to Shostakovich as an example of how the USSR bred important artists. Shostakovich was kept from gulag or execution on several occasions only because he had gained a reputation outside of the USSR and couldn't be easily disposed of. One of those occasions was after Stalin attended a performance of Shostakovich's opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk--Pravda ran editorals denouncing Shostakovich, including one, accusing of Shostakoich of writing "muddle rather than music," which is one of the most famous examples of a government targeting of an artist. Shostakovich, upon reading the editoral, put his family finances and possessions in order in preparation for his execution. Each time he was kept alive by whim, and resurrected his career by having to write the most banal movie and government event music, such as odes to local road authorities. Several of his best works were written "for the desk," music that he could never have had performed or made known to Soviet authorities at the time, and which were put away and taken out only during occasional thaws in Soviet cultural policies. Even in his final years, Soviet authorities forced changes in the text of the 13th Symphony's 1st movement, which was a setting of the Yevtochenko poem Babi Yar---which spoke of Russian antisemetism and the slaughter of Jews at Babi Yar by the Nazis. Not exactly the best example to use for extolling arts in the USSR.
