I haven't heard most of the album yet as it's not released here in the UK until Monday but I am excited by it based on what I've heard so far. The tour will be another new departure for Bryan and I find the prospect of these shows every but as exciting as a 'conventional' tour but also very intriguing indeed. I've been in London for a couple of days so I managed to pick up a copy of the magazine Dazed and Confused mentioned on this list a lot recently. Quite a good read and some excellent pictures but, with some recent criticism of the album on this list in mind I was particularly drawn to Bryan's response to such criticism - "if it isn't too everyone's tastes I don't care". I think this is a fairly clear indicator that this is an album Bryan really wanted to do. I would guess that, despite some references to likely small sales, he's optimistic the album will sell in reasonably large numbers (compared to recent releases), buoyed by advertising and the upcoming TV special - so if some fans don't buy it it's not something he's going to worry about much. Richard PS Don't worry about the English - you're certainly doing better than I would in French! - -------------------- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Oct 1999 01:16:07 +0100 From: "Richard Swift" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Roxy Mini-LP CDs Heather - why not try some UK online shops - I keep giving a plug to www.keymailorder.co.uk because they're very helpful when it comes toFerry / Roxy stuff. If you do order on the Internet be sure to ask the supplier for the replica sleeves because if they're out of these they may send you the remasters in conventional jewel cases. Incidentally - Avalon does sound a lot better on the remaster - the sound is so much clearer. It's as if each of the tracks making up each song has been carefully removed, lovingly washed and dried then put back where it came from (alternatively maybe we'd get the same result washing our CDs in soapy water as has been necessary recently!). Incidentally Bahi - You were looking for FYP in the replica sleeve - the main HMV in Oxford Street still has copies of this - in fact they have a good display of the remasters plus loads of TTOIA on the end of one of their aisles. Your postings on the album are intelligent and make for interesting reading. Personally it saddens me when I hear from fans who are critical of Bryan's work because I want this to be well received and recognised, but then I know that you and others who express disappointment with ATGB dearly want that too - it's just that this time round the album doesn't deliver for you. We`ve put up with endless rumors, practical jokes and even developed a CD tree to distribute bootlegs as a way to make up for the lack of a release. Then Velvet Goldmine came along and put Roxy back into the news, followed by the remasters. But the one topic that had eluded us until now was that of an actual album release and I must say this has been really exciting and I really am happy something is finally released by both Ferry and Manzanera. Mine is sort of strange in another way also. I've seen alot of these guitars, several of my friends have them. Mine differs from all the other ones I've seen in that the back of the headstock is painted black and the black tapers to a point running down the neck about 2 inches. I've seen it many times on Byrdlands and some of the other more expensive hollowbody models, Ted Nugent's guitars come to mind, but mine is the only 335 I've ever seen with such markings. Maybe it's the year although my friend has a '62 and had a '61 and his didn't have it. I also have a nice '64 National Glenwood 99, top of their line, looks like a map of the United States only sea foam green. Actually I have about thirty guitars of various sizes, shapes and colors. This isn't a complaint, as I like both halves of the Maestro's career equally, though it does make all Bryan's fussing over HOROSCOPE, since the songs always come out sounding exactly as you would imagine they would! Plus TAXI had the salutary effect of somehow enabling Bryan to overcome his foot-dragging and get the material out (albeit in somewhat altered form as MAMOUNA). However, AS TIME GOES BY seems only to prove that lurking inside every British rock musician of the '60s and early '70s is a jazzbo just waiting to get out, playing standards and skiffle until the cows come home. When I put this record on, I neither feel like I'm listening to a Bryan Ferry record nor a loving tribute to the '30s. Rather, I feel the numbing sensation of a U.S. public radio station's interminable "Sunday Jazz Brunch." Whether ATBG allows Ferry to cleanse his palate and finally release another album of originals (a la the TAXI -> MAMOUNA progression) remains to be seen. But I sure hope that the new originals on hold are of a higher standard than his take on these standards.
