Specially Falling In Love was great, with Jools on Piano and I think Colin Good on harmonium. Funny to see that almost all the players on the album are mail and his first performance five girls: on violin, harp, cello. Liked the interview with that old clip of ladytron also. Jools invited Bryan after his performance for his newyearseve show! The album really grows on me, some of the songs are the among the best things he has done ever. Since 1983 Bowie has released singles including Let's Dance (number 1), China Girl (number 2) , Modern Love (no 2) ,Blue Jean (Top 5), Loving the Alien (Top 20 I think ) , Tonight (Not sure) , Jump they say (Top 5), Black Tie White Noise (can't remember), Strangers when we meet (can't rememeber), Little Wonder (Top 30), Hallo Spaceboy (Top 10) and now Thursdays Child (Top 20). And absolute beginners ? All of the albums these came from did pretty well as far as I can remember although Outside was a bit weird for some. I haven't researched this either so maybe your right about the album sales and I'm thinking purely on singles. That Street Life compilation sold really well in 86. In this same period Ferry has had one top 10 single - Slave to Love. And maybe a re- issue of Let's stick together. I am therefore not sure we can say his sales have declined like Ferry's. Having said that I like Bowie but prefer Ferry's class and talent. His ouput has been of consistent quality if painfully slow. I just think Bete Noire somehow lost the momentum established by the superb Boys and Girls. He was excellent on Jools Holland. I'm not sure I've ever heard him sing so "in tune". I'm beginning to like this new stuff after being worried about it for a few listens. Artistes seem to clamour to get on it because the viewing figures are far better than conventional music shows, making it a good vehicle. It's been stated that Bryan will appear but precisely when isn't clear - most people appear before the release of the single they're promoting so my guess is he'll be back on UK TV next Saturday or the week after. The appearance on Jools Holland last night was tremendous - "As Time Goes By" was beautifully sung (live) and, seeing Bryan perform material from the new album for the first time I found myself amazed at how well his voice lends itself to these songs - despite the sneak previews from various sources. "Falling In Love Again" too was magnificent - a chilling quality to the delivery and not without some of distinct vocals Marlene Dietrich brought to the original. As far as I'm aware the Jools Holland Hootenay show at New Year is not live so Bryan is likely to appear whilst others enjoy the performance in greenwich. I'm hope to try them out later this week, debit card at the ready. So far, the only remastered album I have is Roxy's debut, and even on my ramshackle lo-fi stereo, it sounds amazingly good. The rhythmic snake hissing of the older CD, pleasantly bizarre though it was, is replaced by the crisp and spacious sound of hi-hats, the strange dull thudding by the sound of a real bass drum. Mellotrontastic! For Your Pleasure and Stranded are next on the list, and I can't wait for Boys & Girls and Bete Noire. I hope that whoever did the original CD version of Boys & Girls (from source material that made for a stunning vinyl LP) has done the right thing and abandoned the music industry to become the cheerful, earless lollipop man that he always should have been. If there's to be an LP replica version in the series of remastered CDs, will its front cover carry the words "Boys and Girls" and the first five song titles, but not Bryan's name? Will it be necessary to flip the whole package head over heels after viewing the front in order to see the back? I hope so - the detail mattered. The distant warmth of the colour photography matched a relatively rosy side A and the colder, monochrome shots side B - songs about an introspective and remote future, starting with The Chosen One. The original LP artwork drew a clear line between the two sides of that album - the past and a possible future - right down to separate label designs on each side of the record itself . It would be good to have a CD cover that tried to come close. Hi, I wouldn't even bother with Black Tie, White Noise. His last 3 albums Outside, Earthling and Hours... are great albums and his subsequent tours especially with the Nine Inch Nails was awesome. Also the stunning song "I'm Afraid of Americans" from Earthling also turned into a cool video with Trent Reznor chasing Bowie. The Outside tour was equally great. He's got a great band again with Reeves Gabrels on guitar and Gail-Ann Dorsey on Bass. I have every Bowie album so I'm very familiar with his catalog. I especially liked "Outside" due to Eno's collaborations and help. I can never hear too much of Eno/Bowie. It seems like a lot of Roxy fans on this list are stuck in a Bowie 70's timewarp. Have you no appreciation for Bowie's music from the 80's and 90's. Yeah, I know I'm settin' myself up to be flamed. Bowie's put out 3 new albums since 1995. He has been very busy in many other area's including the net and art. On the other hand Ferry's last album was 1994. What the heck has he been doing... I don't want to kill the excitement of the new 30's album for the hardcore fans, but I just can't get all that excited about it. I was hoping for some new material to come out as either a new Roxy album or a solo album if he prefers. I'm presently listening to David Sylvian's new album and it occurred to me that this is type of album I could have pictured Ferry coming out with. I feel his talents have been squandered over the last 15 years... ANyways flame away. (I know Ticketmaster said song from the 30's only). Bryan does great covers of many songs, but in my opinion and hopefully some of yours: I don't this this message board would be in existence if he did only cover songs. It is his words and his style and music, that make such loyal fans. I saw Bryan Ferry in concert for the 1st time in 1978 (I think) at the Palladium in NY, I was 17, and went with a friend who liked him, too. We had 6th row seats, and we sat right behind Andy Warhol. Bryan (with Roxy Music) was wearing a red leather suit. I kept getting out of my seat to run up to the stage , and the guards (bouncers) kept making me go back to my seat, I did manage to get his attention!, and I also was able to take a few pictures with that old 110 pocket camera (that makes every-thing look so far away). Did anyone see him in concert back then? I also saw him at Radio City in 1988. Thanks for listening to me. Wow! Who did you see in the 60's? Dylan? Janis Joplin? If you say the Velvet Underground, I am going to worship you. Heather: Uh yeah. I WISH I could have seen them but alas I did not. Janis on her last tour played Ravania in Highland Park, but did not hit Chicago. I kept a copy of the review of that show-very favorable by the way. I missed that show because I had no way of going that far to see her and being all of 15 that summer, I did not have driver's license. She died two months after her appearance there (RIP). As for the Velvet's, I had no idea who they were until after they had broken up and Lou Reed had a hit with Walk on the Wild Side ( one of my fav's). I realized later the impact that they had on Bowie and Roxy. As for Dylan, I just did not get it until maybe the mid 70's. As with the Velvet's ,I found out later how important his influence was on my fave perfomers in paricular the Beatles and Hendirx ( even Dylan raved over his cover of All Along the Watchtower). I did see ohers in the 60's, James Brown- in his prime, The Impressions ( with Curtis Mayfield), Jackie Wilson, and Otis Redding ( and did not fully appreciate him while he was alive). My first "rock" comcert was Sly and the Family Stone in 1969. I was also at the riot a year later when Sly did not show up at Grant Park for a free concert. I missed Hendirx in 1968, his last time playing Chicago, because I was not aware of who he was into later that year ( yeah I was year late-I hate myself now!). Believe me had I had known......... The point in all of this is that I liked all of these perfomers and did not hesitiate to go to see them even if it meant going alone. I have never regretted having to go it alone. I think I'm musically more enriched because of it. Discovering and experincing Roxy and Bryan on recordings and in person, and by myself ( exception being 1994) has definately left a imprint on my musical palate. Yeah, I know I'm > settin' myself up to be flamed. Speaking of a Bowie time warp, it seems that he won't be touring for at least two years to work on the multi-faceted Ziggy Stardust project that's been floating around for a while. I guess that could be either good or bad depending on your point of view.
